create Calagator::Event 1250473511 AgilePDX: Mob Programming Roll back

description nil Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough. The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team. We may choose to head over to McMennamin's Kennedy School for food, drink, and talk afterwards. Facilitator Bio: Willem Larsen is a senior software developer at Hunter Industries. He has been speaking at Agile conferences on improving collaboration since 2009. He is the creator of accelerated team learning tools such as the Mob Programming role-playing game and Code Cooking (with Emmanuel Gaillot), author of the Language Hunter's Kit, co-author of 5 Rules For Accelerated Learning, founder of Language Hunters (a non-profit organization dedicated to improving communities of learning in technology, language, science, and music), and both a wildlife tracker and Search and Rescue tracker.

description nil Speaker panel: "A Jetsons or Bladerunner future for our metropolitan areas - are we on the brink of a technology sea-change for Smart Cities?" Stan Curtis (Urban.Systems), Kevin Martin (City of Portland), Kristin Tufte (PSU), Dave Pelkey (Azimith Communications)
, Moderator: Bud Borja (CGI). The idea of Smart Cities has been around for a while. It encapsulates how technology is going to transform the way we interact with City government & infrastructure, local businesses and our communities. It is very exciting to consider all the transformational possibilities when cities are digitally enabled, as well as the impact of emerging technology such as self-driving cars on the City administrative model and the local economy. But what are the barriers to realizing this future? Which cities are having successes and which are having failures? How about our own City of Portland and other cities in the metropolitan area?
Join us for the SIM Portland April 2018 meeting when we will review what is happening with IT and Smart Cities. We will have a panel of thought leaders speaking on NextGen wired and wireless network, Internet of Things (IoT) and sensors, autonomous vehicles, as well as big data & visualization. Come learn what new opportunities and challenges are here today and on the horizon.

Key topics that will be explored include,
 • Review of Smart Cities planning and strategies to date. • Major technology areas being tackled by Smart Cities groups and collaborations. • Examples of Smart Cities projects successes and failures. • What does this all mean to IT leadership? What should IT infrastructure be prepared for? Agenda 5:30 PM Social 6:30 PM Dinner 6:50 PM Meeting Start 7:00 PM Keynote and Q&A 8:15 PM Close

update Calagator::Event 1250473450 PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) April Happy Hour Roll back

description ***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-april-happy-hour-tickets-43860513978] is required to gain entry to this event *** Join us for happy hour at Squarespace on April 17th. Do you want to amplify your voice? We do too, so we are dedicating this event to being heard, which can be accomplished in a number of ways. To facilitate the conversation, the topic of the night is “how to inject your voice into the workplace.” While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community. Introduction to Squarespace, including what they do and what job opportunities are available. Emily Milburn, Technical Project Leader at Corvel, will encourage us to practice communication skills that elevate our assertive voice. Tiffany Longworth, Site Reliability Engineer at Puppet, will talk about tactical and whimsical ways to leverage fun to get work done. During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking: - An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. - Table Topics to help break the ice. - A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected. Agenda: 4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking 5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers 6:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ: Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? create Calagator::Event 1250473497 Reverse Pitch: Where the investors pitch you Roll back

description nil We flip around the typical roles, asking some of Portland's leading funders to make the kind of elevator pitch they're typically on the other end of. Each investor will get five minutes and up to five slides to win over attendees. Following the last pitch the investors will have a panel discussion to help founders put their best foot forward. We are excited to have special guest Arlan Hamilton participating, founder and managing partner of Backstage Capital. Her emergence on the venture capital stage has been chronicled in Fortune, Fast Company, Inc and Tech Crunch. Her firm has made over 80 investments in early stage companies in the last two years (including a handful of PDX firms).
