Modern business is fluid. Critical business events must be responded to when they occur. Delays mean lost opportunities and sub-optimal outcomes. Modern analytics must be as agile as the business itself.
The days of looking at your data in the rear-view mirror are coming to an end. We are at the dawn of a new analytic revolution: the real-time database.
Millisecond latency is the new analytic performance standard. A new class of GPU-accelerated databases enable this level of performance. GPU-accelerated databases are over 100x more performant than even the “fastest” in-memory data stores.
GPU-accelerated databases can provide extreme levels of scalability without negative performance impacts. They are also easy to implement; thanks to their use of ANSI-standard SQL and hybrid visualization capabilities. This makes them particularly attractive for some of the most demanding analytic tasks; like scoring of predictive models, and geospatial visualizations.
Join Amit Vij from Kinetica to learn how GPU-accelerated databases can enable real-time businesses.
Speaker
Amit is President and Co-Founder of Kinetica. Amit is responsible for the vision and strategic decisions for the company. Having a background in computer engineering, he has over a decade of software development experience in the commercial and federal space, with an emphasis in analyzing and visualizing big data, and helped architect Kinetica. Amit served as the chief GEOINT technical architect as a contractor for a major Top Secret cloud initiative between the US Army, NSA, and the DIA. Prior to Kinetica, Amit was a subject matter expert on geospatial intelligence with General Dynamics AIS and had been chief architect for several Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security contracts. Amit received a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland with concentrations in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mathematics.

We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 40. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Working from a backlog of small, well thought out, user stories helps the team create value and show progress. Join us in discussing how to move from large features / epics / stories to small actionable user stories.
Once again, someone has brought you a blob of a feature. They want you to start on it in a near sprint. What do you do? What processes help you decompose your feature? What flow of events do you prefer to a last minute drop?
Whether you are a master story splitter or new at story writing, we hope you can join us. Share your experience, or bring you questions and scenarios and we'll all walk away with new ideas to try! |

Azure Logic Apps - The other side of Azure Serverless Architecture @ Portland Azure User Group

Please RSVP on the Meetup.com page
Join us Monday, July 30 at SoftSource for a technical presentation on Azure Logic Apps!
This presentation by Samuel Adranyi is a continuation of exploring the various Serverless solutions Microsoft Azure offers.
Logic App Service is an integration and workflow engine with per-built connectors to popular SaaS solutions like Salesforce, Dropbox, and Google services. Essentially it's an easy way to move data from Salesforce to Office 365 or to another cloud service.
A logic app begins with a trigger (like 'When an account is added to Dynamics CRM') and after firing can begin many combinations actions, conversions, and condition logic. Logic Apps is a great choice when orchestrating different Azure Functions in a process - especially when the process requires interacting with an external system or API.
More information about the service here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/logic-apps/ |

Galois Tech Talk: Vellvm -- Verifying the LLVM
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Abstract:
In this talk, I’ll give a high-level overview of Penn’s Vellvm (Verified LLVM) project, which aims to build formal semantics in Coq for the LLVM IR. I’ll sketch some of our past results, in which we verified memory safety transformations and a variant of LLVM’s mem2reg optimization, focusing on the structure of the proof techniques. Along the way, I’ll highlight some of the challenges of reasoning about LLVM code (many of which are still open issues). I’ll wrap up with a status report about our ongoing efforts to re-engineer Vellvm as part of the DeepSpec NSF Expeditions project.
No experience with LLVM or Coq will be assumed.
Bio:
I study programming languages and computer security. I have wide-ranging interests, and some of my most recent work touches on: Coq verification of LLVM program transformations and randomized algorithms, type-directed program synthesis, linear types and GUI programming. I have also spent a lot of time thinking about language-based enforcement of information-flow policies, low-level code memory safety, understanding dynamic security policies, and authorization logic. I am also interested in secure concurrent and distributed computing, functional programming languages, type theory, linear and modal logics, theorem proving and mechanized metatheory. |

How is your knowledge of Agile Engineering Practices? New CSM and A-CSM learning objectives ask Scrum Masters to be able to list and explain the benefits of engineering practices that help teams succeed with Scrum and Agile. This talk provides an overview of both the mechanics and value of practices including Pair Programming, Test-Driven Development, and Continuous Integration.
Want a quick taste of the material, try out the matching exercise at:
http://www.technicallyagile.com/technicalpractices
Daniel has been developing software for nearly two decades and has been working in agile teams for the last 10 years. More recently, he has worked with agile42 coaching teams on the adoption of agile practices both in code and across the organization, but his passion is still in writing great software and helping others do the same.
In addition to writing software and coaching, Daniel maintains a podcast of short 5-minute topics of agile problems that impact the team at technicallyagile.com . |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) August Happy Hour
Roll back
| description |

→ |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-august-happy-hour-tickets-47928719089] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for Happy Hour at Marmoset on August 21st.
Transitioning into the tech industry can be scary, intimidating and for some, insurmountable. Since those of us who have been around for a while may have forgotten the struggle, this month we are asking ourselves how we can make space for those who are new. If you are new, we’d love to hear from you how others can help.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
An employee of Marmoset will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
Lynn Krogseng, experienced Full Stack Developer, will tell us about returning to tech after a long absence.
Kimberly Embry, BSE intern at Jama, will talk about pivoting into the tech field.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: They are gender neutral
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Mostly, please let me know if you need the garage doors open for this event upon arrival. Provides easier entry
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: We are planning to provide light food. I believe you are bringing the beer? University of Portland is sponsoring and bringing the beverages!
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We have a small lot behind the building, people are welcome to try there, otherwise there should be ample street parking at that time.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: You may choose from the patio entry or the door on Lincoln for folks to come in. If it's nice, you'll probably want to use the patio.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Either
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Please note there may be office pets present at this event.
