We are only in the first wave of blockchain-powered technologies and financing models, and already many sectors are being disrupted —from marketing to manufacturing, from healthcare to energy, from law to accounting, and from venture capital to even music.</p> <p>Savvy entrepreneurs are leveraging the blockchain in preparation for a decentralized world, and on this special, interactive online event, you can hear from one of the world's foremost experts in the space (and ask questions).</p> <p>This live event will be hosted by Adeo Ressi (Founder & CEO of the Founder Institute), and feature special guest Anthony Di Iorio.</p> <p>Anthony Di Iorio is a serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist, community organizer, and thought leader in the field of digital currencies, blockchain and decentralized technologies. In 2014, he co-founded the smart contract project Ethereum, which is now the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency valued at $30 billion. Anthony’s entire blockchain and cryptocurrencies investments have earned him a place on the Forbes list of the Richest In Cryptocurrency.</p> <p>Anthony is also the founder and CEO of Decentral (<a href="http://decentral.ca" class="linkified">http://decentral.ca</a>), a Toronto-based innovation hub and software development company focused on decentralized technologies, and Jaxx (<a href="https://jaxx.io" class="linkified">https://jaxx.io</a>), a digital asset wallet that empowers millions of people to control their digital lives. These two organizations recently partnered with the Founder Institute to launch the "Blockchain Founder Syndicate" (<a href="https://fi.co/join/blockchain" class="linkified">https://fi.co/join/blockchain</a>), an initiative to help budding entrepreneurs launch 20 promising companies that leverage blockchain by 2019.</p> <p>On this webinar we will discuss:<br>- What's true about blockchain, and what is hype<br>- The different types of businesses and societal problems blockchain can help address<br>- How entrepreneurs can leverage blockchain in all types of businesses, and how to get started<br>- The future of blockchain, and where the evolution of the technology is headed</p> <p>We hope you will join us!</p> <p>-- RESERVE A SPOT [limited space]: <a href="https://events.genndi.com/register/169105139238452470/a38dd0642f" class="linkified">https://events.genndi.com/register/169105139238452470/a38dd0642f</a> --</p> <p>** Even if you can't make the live webinar, everyone who registers for the event will receive an audio & video recording approximately 72 hours after the event</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250474406 Front End PDX - Monthly Front End PDX Meetup Roll back

description nil <p>This month we're excited to have Josh Nelson join us to talk through making in-browser, multiplayer games, using a recent project called PlinkoJS as an example.</p> <p>PRESENTATION DETAILS</p> <p>Making a game is simple, right?</p> <p>How about adding physics to it? What if we ran it in the browser and made it a real-time multiplayer?</p> <p>I think you can see that very quickly what was once a straightforward challenge has ballooned into a much more significant undertaking. The browser is not a particularly friendly environment for multiplayer games, especially those that need to be responsive and real-time.</p> <p>This presentation will walk us through core challenges that every developer will face when trying to make an in-browser game and how they can overcome them. Josh will highlight key concepts and solutions using a game he recently built in Node and React as an example, PlinkoJS.</p> <p>The following topics will be covered:</p> <p>• Games in the browser - The building blocks for a local, in-browser game<br>• Network architecture - Connecting players over the internet<br>• State synchronization - Creating and maintaining an authoritative game state<br>• Optimizations - Reducing bandwidth and latency estimation</p> <p>SPEAKER DETAILS</p> <p>Josh Nelson is a software engineer with a management background from Portland State University. He has experience working with technologies such as React, Node, Rails, Backbone, and more. He enjoys tackling challenging problems and working with others to build robust systems.</p> <p>• PlinkoJS: www.plinkojs.com<br>• GitHub: <a href="https://github.com/joshcnelson" class="linkified">https://github.com/joshcnelson</a></p> <p>EVENT DETAILS</p> <p>Food, drinks, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00.</p> <p>Paid parking is available in the lot directly across the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. On-street parking is available in the neighborhood as well, of course, if you can find it. There are also bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building.</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250474405 Plarn Lab: A Citizen Design Event by Portland Textile Club, Sponsored by SCRAP PDX and Make+Think+Code@PNCA Roll back

description nil Join Portland Textile Club for a day of creative tinkering & trash R&D. Sponsored by SCRAP PDX and Make+Think+Code@PNCA. Plarn is a D.I.Y. fiber made from plastic bags. What will you make with plarn? Bring your household plastic film and we’ll show you how easy it is to make plarn. We’ll also share simple textile techniques anyone can learn. No prior textile skills needed, just a desire to get plastic out of our trash and put plarn to work. If you’re a fiber artist, knitter, crocheter, sewist, maker or designer, we want you too!
Why Upcycle Plastic Film? 1. It’s Hard to Recycle. Did you know that Portland’s curbside recycling doesn’t take plastic bags? Every bag that goes into the blue bin clogs up the machines used to sort the city’s recycling. 2. Recycling Doesn’t Happen Without Buyers.
Our modern industrial recycling is driven by market demand; without buyers, recyclers stop taking
material (plastic bags don't make the cut).
 3. It’s Everywhere, Even in a No-Bag City.
Portland is known as a city that bans plastic bags, however, the ban only targets the largest supermarket chains. Despite our best efforts, our households still have plastic film from many other sources. This is a free event, but space is limited to 12 participants. If you sign up but cannot make it, please cancel your ticket so those on the waitlist can register. All ages are welcomed (children must be over 6 years old); all children must be accompanied by an adult (registration is not needed for the accompanying adult). Thanks to our sponsors SCRAP PDX and Make+Think+Code@PNCA.

create Calagator::Event 1250474398 PASCAL Hackerspace - Tools That Pwn: A Hacker Symposium Roll back

description nil <p>This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at PASCAL are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with MrDe4d, Cylon, Wireglitch and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX this Saturday!</p> <p>After (and probably during) this presentation, we will, as presenters and attendees, decide on which tool (or framework) to focus on for a new bi-monthly workshop. We will set aside time to answer questions, and hold demonstrations of each utility discussed. This is all about what YOU want to learn!! The future workshop will be scheduled after all Q&A and demos are complete and will take place 2-4 weeks after, at which point we will continue the series until we have completed a thorough review of each tool.<br>Questions? please email MrD34d--> [masked] or Cylon--> [masked]. We can also be found on the encrypted messaging app called Wire, which is available for desktop, Android and Apple devices (@mrdead or @wireglitch for invites to the PASCAL channel.)<br>PASCAL has snacks and drinks for some dollars and cents, though everyone is welcome to bring their own food and drink.<br>Final Note: if you RSVP and are no longer able to make it, please do take the time to change your RSVP so that someone else may attend, even if it is only an hour before! Thanks!</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250474395 Women Who Code Portland - Open Source Study Night: Hacktoberfest! Roll back

description nil <p>Hacktoberfest! Let's celebrate open source over food, drinks, learning, and great company. Commit your first PR to an open source project, or submit new PRs to win prizes.</p> <p>What's Hacktoberfest?</p> <p>Hacktoberfest — brought to you by DigitalOcean in partnership with GitHub and Twilio — is a month-long celebration of open source software. Maintainers are invited to guide would-be contributors towards issues that will help move the project forward, and contributors get the opportunity to give back to both projects they like, and ones they've just discovered. No contribution is too small—bug fixes and documentation updates are valid ways of participating.</p> <p>Can't make it to this event? Hacktoberfest is virtual and open to participants from around the globe. Connect with other Hacktoberfest participants by using the hashtag, #hacktoberfest. Sign up to participate today: <a href="https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/" class="linkified">https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/</a></p> <p>Rules and Prizes</p> <p>First sign up on the Hacktoberfest site. If you open up five pull requests between October 1 and October 31, you'll win a free, limited edition Hacktoberfest T-shirt. (Pull requests do not have to be merged and accepted; as long as they've been opened between the very start of October 1 and the very end of October 31, they count towards a free T-shirt.)</p> <p>We'll also be raffling off prizes to participants at this event - come ready to win swag!</p> <p>Come prepared with:<br>* Laptop/Computer<br>* IDE of your choice - we like Visual Studio Code<br>* Git/GitHub or GitLab. create Calagator::Event 1250474386 Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Python: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy Roll back

description nil <p>We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn".</p> <p>At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.</p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free course providing an introduction to Python. Python is a popular programming language for general-purpose programming. It is particularly easy to learn fo those new to coding.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of this popular computer language - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>The Instructor:<br>Erik Gross is the co-founder of The Tech Academy, a software developer training school based in Portland, OR. The Tech Academy has helped hundreds of graduates to break into the technology field. Mr. Gross has been a working software developer and consultant for many years, and has developed simple, clear methods for helping nontechnical people genuinely understand technical concepts. He brings an enthusiastic, accessible teaching style to an area of knowledge that all too often leaves people in the dark.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250474382 A Woman-Focused Global Day of Coderetreat Roll back

description nil AgilePDX is excited to present it’s first annual woman-focused Coderetreat with support from PDX WIT and Women Who Code Portland. Yes, it’s woman-focused, and everyone is welcome. Coderetreat is a self-organizing international group of software developers who gather to help each other improve. Their website, if you’d like to go right to the source, is coderetreat.org. Key practices we’ll be focusing on are problem-solving, pairing, and moving to TDD (Test Driven Development). You will be pairing with new pairing partners all day long to help build your network, make new friends, and learn what it’s like to pair with people who use different coding strategies than you do. And Jean and Tracie will be there to support you! If you learn one new thing on Saturday that you can take back to the office, you have a win, and so do we! We’ll also be supporting you in understanding the importance of taking care of yourself while coding and strategies for attracting skills transfer opportunities. Breakfast and lunch are provided by our sponsor for this event, Cayuse. Come early and meet other attendees for a leisurely chat over coffee! Register here so we can get an accurate count: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/255280597/

description nil Have traffic and work schedules prevented you from joining an agile event on a topic which could help you or your teams? Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer! This agile lunch discussion is a collaborative effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there. The event is held on a Zoom conference line. We've learned using video is best, and you might consider your environment before joining -- find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted or feel self conscious. We're monitoring chat as a back channel, so if you can't find a spot in the discussion, add your question in chat and our hosts will try to work it in. **Topic:** Agile thinking: Compare Scrum, Lean, Kanban, XP and any other methodologies you have used. What has worked? What hasn't? Maybe one methodology is better suited for certain situations or work efforts. Or you have seen great success going beyond frameworks and methodologies. Join us and tell us about the spices in your kitchen, and let's compare notes! **Please RSVP at our Meetup event and get the zoom connection info:** https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/254946132/

Ever had a team completely fall apart? Ever suddenly discover that the underlying assumptions, attitudes, beliefs, and aspirations of the group weren't what you thought? Rest assured, you're not alone. Welcome to the world of complex systems. Every one of these things (and more) have happened to the presenter of this talk. Join Michael as he shares his own journeys and the journeys of other adventurers, in an attempt to devise better tools for managing our (mis)adventures. Speaker Bio: Michael is a veteran of numerous software development adventures. He's built software for power companies and banks, for the trucking industry and education, for internet start-ups and established companies. Some have been spectacular successes...others, not so much. He's currently delving into the intersection of complexity theory and cognitive science, as seen through the lens of wilderness adventuring, in an attempt to improve our chances of survival.
