Join us for an event dedicated to women of color currently seeking employment or currently working in technology in the Portland area. We’ll dialogue, network and meet.
Amanda Lopez, Recruitment Analyst at Metro, will lead the group in creating an inclusive space to share challenges, opportunities and experiences specific to people who identify as women of color. She will also offer attendees the opportunity to share what they are looking for in this event moving forward.

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

NLP for fun and profit. Story of end to end machine learning
project on Kubernetes.

Abstract: Machine learning makes waves again, we are being constantly
amazed by new feats neural networks can achieve. Models, while
important, are a small part of the whole machine learning system. The
infrastructure it runs on, the dataset itself and data
cleaning/preprocessing pipeline are often omitted in news articles,
but they are critical components of any machine learning project.
Infrastructure, in particular, is a hard problem and there are few
good examples of running cloud-native machine learning. In GitHub, we
are building a full platform for machine learning based on Kubernetes.
In this talk we will walk through such end to end project, one anyone
can replicate at home (code is open source and data is available), we
will tackle hard natural language problem - automatically labeling
GitHub issues as bug or feature. We will deep dive into our Kubernetes
use case and walk through different components we have used for every
step of ML project lifecycle - from data preprocessing to serving
model for the application. |

This month our special guest will be Gareth Baldrica-Franklin, who will be giving us a tour of the Atlas of the Pacific Northwest, an interactive educational product served entirely with open source tools such as Chart.js, D3, Topojson, Leaflet, QGIS, and Geoserver. We'll also try to cover some of the usual exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.

Once you have figured out who you want. Then you must know what you want them to say. The key to any sales process is just that, the sales process. How and who to prospect, how to qualify said prospects, the presentation, the close and of course the follow up. All are critical aspects to getting sales results.
Finally, what opportunities does your sales team present? What type of information and customer feedback can be gleaned? What benefits can be achieved by having a salesperson on board from the outset of product design?

Calling all entrepreneurs! Got an idea that you think has potential, but you want some experts to weigh in? Or perhaps you are already making your dream a reality, have some investment and want to keep your momentum going? Perhaps you’re somewhere in between. Get in front of Oregon Venture Fund investors so they can provide informal, constructive feedback and connections. 90% of OVF investors have started or run a business at some point in their career, and this is a no-pressure way to tap into their connections and get early feedback from these local entrepreneurs and tech leaders.

Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: There is bike parking in our parking garage (entrance on Park Ave between Yamhill and Morrison). The room is not secured, but it is monitored by the parking attendant.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Public transportation is easy! The event is a block away from the Max and the Streetcar.

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Women Who Code Portland is hosting a Software Engineering Interview Preparation Workshop. This event is geared towards helping women prepare for technical interviews, but we welcome everyone who supports our mission of inspiring women to excel in technology careers and follows our code of conduct. The goal of the workshop is to provide people with the opportunity to gain experience with a technical interview format.
This workshop is broken into two sections:
- Interview Best Practices
- Mock Interviews & Whiteboarding
In the morning, we'll cover an introduction to solving algorithms. Participants will have the chance to see common interview algorithms, and approach how to solve them under pressure.
In the afternoon, we will break into groups for mock interviews. This will help participants get a feel for what a technical interview might be like. Whiteboarding can be much different than writing on paper, especially in front of others. Participants will have the chance to practice answers to common questions, thinking out loud while solving a problem and practice techniques for how to move forward when stumped.

The event cost is $10 for participants and includes lunch.

And the more expert communicators you have on your team, the more potential you have to build trust in a professional way.</p> <p>One tool to help you on this journey is the Johari Window. Created by psychologists Joseph Luft (1916–2014) and Harrington Ingham (1916–1995) in 1955, the Johari Window helps people understand what they show and what they hide from the world; what they don't see and what they don't even know about themselves.</p> <p>Neal first learned about the Johari Window in one of his leadership training sessions, and it piqued his interest as a facilitation tool. We are excited to have Neal share his insights about how to use the Johari window to help teams connect on a deeper level without oversharing. And the more expert communicators you have on your team, the more potential you have to build trust in a professional way.</p> <p>One tool to help you on this journey is the Johari Window. Created by psychologists Joseph Luft (1916–2014) and Harrington Ingham (1916–1995) in 1955, the Johari Window helps people understand what they show and what they hide from the world; what they don't see and what they don't even know about themselves.</p> <p>Neal first learned about the Johari Window in one of his leadership training sessions, and it piqued his interest as a facilitation tool. We are excited to have Neal share his insights about how to use the Johari window to help teams connect on a deeper level without oversharing. And for those interested, we'll have an opportunity for hands-on exercises.</p> <p>Bio<br>Neal Peterson is a business consultant who helps businesses utilize the full capacity of their systems and processes. His goal is to enable businesses and people to do more with less, more efficiently and effectively. About the Speaker
Roland Rivera is an accomplished, visionary, and results-oriented IT executive offering 20+ years of Federal, State, and Higher Education experience covering a broad spectrum of IT activities from Concept Development, through Design, Implementation, and Operations, all using ITIL best practices and the Project Management Framework for execution of major projects and programs.
He is currently the CIO at Oregon Secretary of State where he provides strategic policy recommendations, direction, and proposals to promote the successful execution of the goals and objectives of the Agency’s Information Systems Division. Roland leads a high performance IT environment, grounded in industry standard frameworks and best practices balanced with a healthy dose of common sense. He has lead the deployment of Service Desk management, Network Operations and Security Center, IT asset management, IT Governance and Project Portfolio Management as well as cost-benefit analysis, feasibility studies, budgets and narratives related to IT projects.
