This Saturday, (and Sunday if there's interest) CrisisCamp will bring together volunteers to collaborate on technology projects which aim to assist in Haiti's relief efforts by providing data, information, maps and technical assistance to NGOs, relief agencies and the public. This event is free and open to the public. You don't have to be technical to volunteer time. Using video Sheldon was able to launch the 3552 into the global marketplace quickly and clearly. description A Scalable I/O Manager for GHC Presented by Johan Tibell. Abstract: The Glasgow Haskell Compiler supports extraordinarily cheap threads. These are implemented using a two-level model, with threads scheduled across a set of OS-level threads. Since the lightweight threads can’t afford to block when performing I/O operations, when a Haskell program starts, it runs an I/O manager thread whose job is to notify other threads when they can safely perform I/O. The I/O manager manages its file descriptors using the select system call. While select performs well for a small number of file descriptors, it doesn’t scale to a large number of concurrent clients, making GHC less attractive for use in large-scale server development. This talk will describe a new, more scalable I/O manager that’s currently under development and that hopefully will replace the current I/O manager in a future release of GHC. Steve was the CFO for Papa Murphy’s, a 20-plus state privately held pizza concept, from 1995-2000. He functioned as CFO of Springtime Inc. and Oregon Garden Products for five years and for two years as Vice President and Regional Controller for a cable television company in Portland. The members of PIE invite you to join them for a great session on understanding better when and when you don't need a lawyer. We have invited one of the tech startup industry's best law firms to come and talk to the entreprenuers in Portland's startup scene. Neil Nathanson from the Portland office of the leading startup law firm Perkins Coie, will talk about the critical points in a startup's lifecycle where having your own legal sledgehammer is essential. Also joining him will be Jeff Bock, addressing licensing and intellectual property issues and Neil addressing corporate and finance issues. He will also cover what sort of services and counsel you can expect from a law firm and then be open for a Q&A session. The event will start at 6pm, but the doors will open around 5:30 with pizza available. There is no fee to attend - but please only register if you intend to come so we can have enough food.
