OSCON
Roll back
description |
If the first years of OSCON were about opening the minds of big business to the philosophy of open source, are the years ahead about opening the minds of the open source community to the possibilities of its future? As open source becomes fully integrated into the corporate environment, OSCON helps to define, maintain, and extend the identity of what it means to be open source.
OSCON focuses on the substance of technology, not the shadow, filtering the information that most merits attention and preparing participants for curves and challenges in the coming year and beyond. OSCON is the place to be inspired and challenged, renew bonds to community, make new connections, and find ways to give back to the open source movement. OSCON has also become one of the most important places to make open source related announcements, and to unveil projects and products.
Open source is a fundamental principle at the core of many established and emerging technologies, driving the future of the computer industry. OSCON explores the open source technologies that are here to stay, what will broaden the foundation, and what will lead the way to unexpected places and innovations.
"For those who have not been to OSCON, it's a great technical conference covering the whole spectrum of open source, including Linux, MySQL, the LAMP stack, Perl, Python, Ruby on Rails, middleware, applications, cloud computing, and more. OSCON always has great keynotes, tutorials, and evening Birds-of-a-Feather sessions. As with many conferences, a lot of the meat takes place in hallway conversations and impromptu sessions."

TOP TEN CAUSES OF NEW PRODUCT FAILURES
Roll back
description |

Product Development and Management Association Learning and Networking Event
Most new products fail even though really smart people work hard to make them successful. Why is that? The journey from a glimmer of a new idea to a commercially winning product is long and arduous, with many steps and decisions along the way. This event will identify the most common causes of new product failure and propose action to avoid those problems in the future. The discussion will range from the fuzzy front end to sales support and from individual to team to market challenges.
Two of the most experienced Product Managers in Portland, with combined new product experience of over 50 years, will illustrate the causes of failure with real-world examples. Audience members will have time to pose questions, offer comments and exchange ideas on this important and challenging topic.
Everyone involved in product planning and product development from either the engineering or marketing side will benefit. The causes that will be explained apply to start-up companies as well as large, established corporations. By attending, you’ll be able to go back to your product development activities and quickly assess if you’re at risk of becoming a victim of one or several of these all too common pitfalls.
This event will be at:
Portland State Business Accelerator
intersection of SW Corbett Ave. & SW Meade St.
Portland, OR 97201
Be aware that this location can be difficult to find. The best set of directions for finding the event are available at http://psba.pdx.edu/drivingdirections
NOTE: if using GPS or online mapping: use intersection of SW Corbett Ave and SW Meade St, Portland, OR 97201. Do NOT use street address (2828 SW Corbett Ave.), as you will be given bad directions.
$20 on-line registration prior to the event
$25 at the door
(A discount is available for PDMA members)

Season 2, episode 10 (last episode)
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.
*NB* Season 2 is ending (7-12 will be the 10th episode), so we're discussing locations for Season 3. Check the website for details. |

Dev Nation
Roll back
description |
nil |
→ |
<p>In early 2009, several developers from Relevance and Viget Labs got together and starting talking about technical conferences. As we discussed our past experiences at regional, national, and international events, we began to realize something: large conferences are wonderful for a lot of things, but we wanted something that met a different set of goals. We came up with Developer Day, which was designed to:</p>
<ul><li>Build lasting relationships among local peers</li><li>Bridge distinct technical communities</li></ul>
<p>After a year of Developer Days, however, we decided a new look was in order, and thus was born DevNation. We've still got the same ideals, but we feel that the DevNation name better reflects that vision (and it's easier to Google!)</p>
<h3>Relationships</h3>
<p>The general pattern for a large conference runs something like this: you fly to a city, go to the event, have a great time, meet lots of great people, and fly home. More often than not, you don't see those people again until the next big conference, and that's a problem. We wanted our event to be different, so it's intentionally local. Speakers and attendees are overwhelmingly local to the conference, so when you meet someone doing something cool, you can connect with them a week later for lunch without a problem.</p>
<h3>Technology-Agnostic</h3>
<p>Sure, there are events that draw a wide range of developers (e.g., OSCON), but even then people tend to segregate; the Pythonists go to their sessions, the Rubyists to theirs, and the PHP devs to theirs. By having only one track, we give everyone the opportunity to see what's happening in other communities.</p> |

Galois Tech Talk: Requirements and Performance of Data Intensive, Irregular Applications

Requirements and Performance of Data Intensive, Irregular Applications
Dr. John Feo
Many fundamental science, national security, and business applications need to process large volumes of irregular, unstructured data. Data collection and analysis is rapidly changing the way the scientific, national security, and economic communities operate. There are worldwide operational deployments of instruments to detect the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, monitor terrorist cells, and track the movement of illicit goods and services. In the next 15 years 30% of battle-space defense forces will be autonomous with each advanced robotic device carrying dozens of sophisticated sensors collecting, processing, analyzing and transmitting large amounts of data. American economic competitiveness will depend increasingly on the timely analysis of many Petabytes of data collected in diverse computing clouds charting the social and economic behavior of consumers.
Unlike traditional scientific applications based on linear algebra routines, data analytic applications comprise large, integer-based graph computations with irregular data access patterns, low computation to memory access ratios, and high levels of fine grain parallelism that pass data and synchronize frequently. Traditional architectures optimized to run large-scale floating point intensive simulations are inadequate, and more suitable high-end architectures such as the Cray XMT are needed. In this talk I will discuss the programming language, tools, and system requirements for data analytic applications. I will survey the research at PNNL’s Center for Adaptive Supercomputer Software as regards graph analytics. In particular, I will present several key graph algorithms we have developed with an emphasis on structure, use of special hardware features, performance, and scalability. |
