create Calagator::Event 1250458791 BE the difference: Big Brothers Big Sisters Roll back

description nil There are currently 2,400 children on the Big Brothers Big Sisters waitlist in the Portland and Vancouver metropolitan area. Many of the children come from foster care or single parent households and hope to one day meet a caring friend through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. In an effort to locate new volunteers, we’ve launched the BE the difference campaign, a 100 day (June 17 - September 25) initiative that aims to bring 500 new friendships to children in the Portland and Vancouver metropolitan area. When you become a Big Brother, Big Sister, or Big Couple, you bring hope to a child in need. And you do it simply by spending a few hours a week together doing the things you already like to do. You are a friend and mentor; not a parent. You are providing a life-changing friendship by simply spending time together. As a volunteer, you are not alone. At Big Brothers Big Sisters you are professionally supported from day one. We will interview you to learn about your interests, concerns, time and geographic availability. After the match is made, professional case managers support the match and assist you with any issues that may arise. In addition, our activities department will provide fun outing and event opportunities for you and your Little Brother or Little Sister. To help change the life of a child, contact the agency by visiting bbbsnorthwest.org or by calling Heath Berg at (503) 249-4859.

create Calagator::Event 1250458785 WhereCampPDX 2010 Roll back

description nil WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks “where am I” or feels the need to “know their place”. An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation – this event is free and it is driven by the participants.

update Calagator::Event 1250458186 Portland Java User Group Roll back

description This month's topic: TBD ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) This month's topic: Rich Internet Clients: A moderated, but open discussion on what is the "right technology" for an internet application. Bring your opinions, experience and personal bias and join in a lively discussion on a highly pertinent topic. Topical questions include but are not limited to: Applications written using HTML, CSS and Java Script (DHTML) have some advantages but what requirements, if any, would sway a project towards -Flash, Applets or Java F/X? Is there significant differences between consumer versus business based applications that would cause cause a particular technology to be used? Are they days of Flash numbered or is the current trend towards pure DHTML doomed because of fragmentation in the browser market? Moderator: Brian Mason ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!)

It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. This talk introduces the concept of well-founded recursion as a tool for implementing recursive functions. It implements these concepts in the Agda programming language and demonstrates the technique by implementing a simple version of Quicksort.

A locally owned business since 2001, McKenzie Books has bought and sold over a million used books online in just the past two years. Although the bookstore is internet-based and serves customers worldwide, McKenzie Books also invites local customers to order online and pick up at the business address. They also welcome visitors to use their lobby computer kiosk to search their virtual bookshelves. The lobby is open for business from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located on the southwest corner of 153rd and S.W. Millikan Way in Beaverton; two blocks from the Beaverton Creek MAX station. About DonorsChoose.org Today’s public schools often lack resources for students to thrive. “Citizen philanthropists” can choose and fund specific project requests from teachers, and even receive thank you cards directly from the classrooms. Charles Best, a former Bronx public high school teacher, started DonorsChoose in 2000 so that individuals could connect directly with classrooms in need. Projects range from as little as $49 to several thousand depending on the supplies requested by the teacher. Approximately 75% of projects costing less than $400 get fully funded. 100% of the funds go towards purchasing the supplies and delivering them directly to classrooms. DonorsChoose has raised over $51 million dollars helping more than 3 million students in the process. Contact: Jim Smith [email protected] 15370 SW Millikan Way Beaverton, OR 97006 Ph: 503-488-5439

Contact: Jim Smith [email protected] 15370 SW Millikan Way Beaverton, OR 97006 Ph: 503-488-5439

create Calagator::Event 1250458766 JETRO Clean Tech Seminar Series: Japan-U.S. Smart Grid Market Trends of the Future Roll back

description nil Global companies are closely eyeing the opportunity in the now-developing and popular smart grid market. Currently, the U.S. is the hot spot for smart grid development and is also attracting Asian companies from Japan, China and Korea, who are interested in deploying their smart grid technologies in the U.S. However, a majority of the U.S.-based smart grid technology companies in this market are unaware of the opportunities outside of the U.S. This seminar will off er opportunities to learn what is happening in the smart grid market in Japan and the U.S. Furthermore, in this seminar you will learn ideas on how Japanese and U.S. smart grid companies could complement each other to grow the market together. The general difference in the current implementation of the smart grid in Japan and the U.S. is that the U.S. seems more business-focused, aiming to reduce energy costs and develop infrastructure, while Japan seems more society-focused, seeking to reduce carbon emissions as a whole. Japan already has a reliable grid and is pushing for advanced integrated control including demand-side to be ready for intermittent renewable energy sources. In the United States, however, there’s a need for highly reliable transmission and distribution networks. Join us for an opportunity to advance a close working relationship between Japan and the U.S. to develop and deploy the smart grid in each nation.
