create Calagator::Event 1250462045 Real World HTML5, CSS3, Javascript -- All API Driven Roll back

description nil <p>The dream of web services lies in deploying rich web applications without having to render anything on a server first. You don't need Wordpress, Ruby on Rails, or any complex deployments to deliver powerful and sexy interactive experiences. You just need a bit of Javascript, and a lot of CSS.<br> This is walkthrough of a real production app composed entirely of static resources (html pages, css, javascript) with NO SERVER CODE, other than the APIs it talks to.</p> <p>This is a true separation-of-concerns architecture, and we learned a lot by developing this.</p> <ul> <li>How to use Compass/SASS to quickly generate CSS* How we used Middleman to write our HTML using SLIM</li> <li>Using some HTML5 tricks to make layout simple</li> <li>How we render everything on the fly using HTML templates (Handlebars)</li> <li>What is backwards compatible, and what gracefully degrades</li> <li>Really, REALLY sexy page transitions (ala github file browsing) using CSS3 (and a bit of Javascript)</li> <li>How we made everything work on mobile devices with almost no work at all</li> <li>Why we designed everything this way in the first place, and why you should too</li> </ul><p>This meetup with feature snacks, provided again by Vitamin T, and more (better) book giveaways!</p>

update Calagator::Event 1250462032 Portland Java User Group: Giving your Application Thumbs Roll back

description This month's topic: Giving your Application Thumbs Mobile phone texting (txting) is now ubiquitous - a comfortable UI to everybody that has a cell phone. With most age groups, the time spent texting far exceeds time making voice calls. Logically, Java developers should be considering txt interfaces to their applications. We will look at adding mobile txt interfaces to three applications: - A mobile web healthcare application with group push txt notification to other caregivers of an event - An iPad POS web application for ordering from your car via txt from your mobile phone - An installed Swing application to display group txting for public display ---------- Speaker: Jon Batcheller Jon is the founder of PJUG and Java architect and UI developer for RealPage in Wilsonville, OR. He has been writing in Java since his first taste in version 0.9, 17 years ago! In addition to being a code monkey, Jon is a licensed Veterinarian, owns two bars, is an auctioneer and in his spare time teaches Human Anatomy and Physiology at PCC. Having never missed a JavaOne since their inception in 1996, he hopes to see you there in the Fall! ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc. http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) This month's topic: Giving your Application Thumbs Mobile phone texting (txting) is now ubiquitous - a comfortable UI to everybody that has a cell phone. In addition to being a code monkey, Jon is a licensed Veterinarian, owns two bars, is an auctioneer and in his spare time teaches Human Anatomy and Physiology at PCC. create Calagator::Event 1250462034 PDX TechCoffee Roll back

description nil Season 6, episode 5 - Leap Year Edition Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks! TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

create Calagator::Event 1250462033 CHIFOO presents: "Security *IS* a Game: Using the Blender Game Engine for Security" with Jeff Bryner Roll back

description nil SecViz.org is a great resource for security visualizations, but most suffer from a lack of interactivity. Completing kinectasploit for DEFCON19 made me realize the utility of game engines for interacting with security tools and security information. Jeff will start with a recap/encore performance of kinectasploit (http://p0wnlabs.com/defcon19), which uses gestures to drive a first-person shooter 3D game environment to break into computers on victim virtual machines. Then using the same technology, Jeff will walk through a couple scenes using standard corporate security data in a 3D, kinect-driven environment made possible by the blender game engine. Kinect and gestures are two of the most prevalent game-changing technologies to affect user interfaces since the keyboard and mouse. Applying these tools to real-world data is challenging, fraught with pitfalls, and a heck of a lot of fun! Let’s discover the boundaries of current technology by pushing it until it fails!
