Please join us on Thursday for our third installment of SPARK!
This month, Astro Rockandrolla of House of Sound radio presents, "Two Turntables and a Microphone (and the Internet, a herd of DJ's and some cops)"
SPARK is a monthly effort to create a community within several different groups and cultures within Portland. Part Ignite, part Pint (if you remember back that far), part MindShare (if you want to meet new people), SPARK! is a monthly meet up for technologists, designers, developers, product managers, agency wonks, project managers, producers, database geeks, and other nerds of all flavors.
Astro Rockandrolla, co-founder of House of Sound Radio (www.houseofsound.org), rants about the technical, legal, logistic and social issues that come with running an online, live streaming radio station for three years and running. Some real tech, some sociology, some finance - a loosely organized talk about the real deal of what's involved.
The Jack London will open at 4 for Happy Hour specials, and our featured presenter will be on at 6:30.
*To enter The Jack London Bar - use the front entrance of Rialto, walk to the back of the bar, where you will see a large neon blue Jack London Bar sign, as well as a stairs to the underground bar. |

Product Management Challenges in the Transition to Agile
Roll back
| description |
## March PDMA Learning and Networking Event
If your development has started to embrace Agile methods, youâll quickly notice the team is acting strangely. All of a sudden an MRD becomes a âbacklogâ, software releases become âsprintsâ, requirements become âuser storiesâ and new languages such as âestimating pokerâ and âfist to fiveâ start creeping into meetings.
A successful transition also requires that Product Management behaves differently to leverage the benefits of Agile. During this transition, Product Management can either become the hero that helps Agile to shine as a serious business tool, or a villain that drives Agile deep into the dark corners of development.
Weâll discuss some of the following specific challenges the Product Managers often experience in this transition among others:
- Converting visions to backlogs
- Driving and reporting roadmaps in Agile
- Working with Product Owners⦠or being a Product Owner
- PMâs role in iteration and release planning
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its March Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will share their experiences with transitions to Agile and offer specific tactics to make your transition successful. They will then lead a vigorous discussion based on Q&A from the audience.
A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.
**Speakers**
* **Dorian Simpson, Managing Partner, Planning Innovations**
* **Miki Tokola, Managing Partner, Micom Consulting**
**Date, Time, and Cost**
* Thursday, March 15, 2012, 5:30-8:00 PM
* $20 on-line registration prior to the event
* $25 at the door

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting

10gen will be there with a presentation on MongoDB.

10gen: Intro to MongoDB and Schema Design
One of the challenges that comes with moving to MongoDB is figuring
how to best model your data. While most developers have internalized
the rules of thumb for designing schemas for RDBMSs, these rules don't
always apply to MongoDB. The simple fact that documents can represent
rich, schema-free data structures means that we have a lot of viable
alternatives to the standard, normalized, relational model. Not only
that, MongoDB has several unique features, such as atomic updates and
indexed array keys, that greatly influence the kinds of schemas that
make sense. Understandably, this begets good questions:
* Are foreign keys permissible, or is it better to represent one-to-
many relations withing a single document?
* Are join tables necessary, or is there another technique for building
out many-to-many relationships?
* What level of denormalization is appropriate?
* How do my data modeling decisions affect the efficiency of updates
and queries?
In this session, we'll answer these questions and more, provide a
number of data modeling rules of thumb, and discuss the tradeoffs of
various data modeling strategies.

Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Research Club Brunch #22: Coffee, comics, and cabaret!
Roll back
| description |

Featured talks:
Leo Daedalus - The Late Now
Leo hosts the thinking mammal’s live late-night-style variety-cabaret-talk show. A considered fiasco for the avant set.
Vivian Hua
In 2005, I started a publication called REDEFINE, which began with no particular focus. It grew to become a music and arts publication dedicated to covering lesser-known and independent musicians. In the past year (2011), a series of extraordinary [personal] circumstances has led to the complete thematic and conceptual overhaul of REDEFINE. The music industry is not even close to what it was in 2005, and the site's new mission, moving forward, is one that I hope will be predictive of changes to come in the industry.
Sara Mirk - Oregon History Comics
In 2009, I started on what I thought would be a quick, fun educational project: Creating 10 small comic books about Oregon’s history. My friends, myself, and the majority of Portland didn’t grow up in the state, so researching and writing these comics was a way to help build understanding of our surroundings in a relevant, accessible medium. Local arts and culture nonprofit theDill Pickle Club joined on as a collaborator and over the past two years we’ve raised $2,500, hired nine local artists, and published six of the ten comics. The box set of comics is finally being released this March 5th at Powell’s!
Ezra Spier - Where Coffee Comes From
Ezra has traveled far and wide, to plantations in South America and Africa, to see every step of the process of making coffee. Follow one of our favorite beverages from berries on the plants to our greedy, greedy mouths. |

North Portland Coders Night - Now monthly, every first Monday!
Roll back
| description |
NOTE: Due to limited attendance of the weekly coders night, I'm reducing it to a single monthly event. First Monday was chosen to avoid conflicts with Dorkbot, DevOps, the Functional Programming Study Group, and the Android Developer meetup.
Of course, it's a public bar, so everyone's welcome to come on off weeks anyway if they feel like it.
----------------------------------------------------
Come hang out, drink beer, and write code <del>every</del> on the *first* Monday of the month.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops. |

Portland Perl Mongers – VoteFair ranking: Math-based voting power for the 99%
Roll back
| description |

speaker: Richard Fobes
The new CPAN module named Voting::VoteFairRanking yields higher levels of voting fairness. You do voting when you click on Google results, and you use voting results when you view the star rating of an Amazon product.
Now learn how voting really works, how it is usually miscalculated – intentionally in the case of elections – and how it can be done to fully extract the wisdom in a group. Learn the math behind the puppet strings that connect politicians (of both parties) to the biggest campaign contributors. (Partial spoiler: The biggest unfairness is hidden in primary elections.) Also learn the math that eventually will cut those puppet strings. Along the way you will learn that there are different kinds of popularity.
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab. |

iBooks 2.0: Reinventing Textbooks? — Mobile Portland
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Please RSVP at http://mobileportland.com/events/ibooks-20-reinventing-textbooks
When Apple announced iBooks 2.0, it made a bold claim that it was reinventing the textbook. Who better to judge whether or not Apple has succeeded at its goal than Mobile Portland alum and Textbook 3.0 advocate Corey Pressman.
In August 2010, Corey participated in a panel talking about using mobile technology in education. Corey talked about his efforts to convince textbook publishers to start to see the iPhone and the iPad as the foundation for an entirely new form of textbooks. He talked about both the learning theory behind why a digital textbook would be more successful as well as what would make them fun for students.
And he did it all as one of our more compelling and funny speakers. So it makes sense to bring him back to talk about what iBooks 2.0, iBooks Author, and iTunes U means for students, teachers, and textbook publishers.
Like nearly every Apple announcement, the iBooks Author announcement wasn’t without controversy—license restrictions and modification of the ePub format into a proprietary iBooks file format are at the top of the list. After Corey talks about textbooks, a small panel of expert publishers and educators will join Corey to talk about the implications of iBooks Author and the overall initiative on education and publishing in general.
About the Panelists
<b>Corey Pressmen, Founder, Exprima Media</b>
Corey taught Anthropology for 12 years before deciding to enter the software universe. As a professional educator, Corey was always interested in, yet disappointed with, the educational technology that textbook publisher sales reps were peddling. Convinced that more could be done to create effective computer-based educational experiences, Corey started Exprima Media, a software company dedicated to creating robust and engaging educational experiences for the web and native mobile platforms. Exprima is currently working with Pearson Education, W.W. Norton, John Wiley & Sons, and McGraw Hill to build the future of educational media.
<b>Steve Burt, Manager, Content & Research, Clarity Innovations</b>
Steve Burt leads a team that works with Intel Education to create solutions that blend research-based instructional practices with emerging technologies. Prior to his work at Clarity, Steve was a high school administrator, after a few years of teaching History and English.
<b>Tim Lauer, Principal, Lewis Elementary School</b>
Tim Lauer routinely works with school administrators and teachers to plan practical, supportable uses of technology in teaching and learning. Having been a teacher for many years, he understands the real world of the classroom and the challenges to move forward technologically within tight budgets.
<b>Thor Prichard, CEO, Clarity Innovations — Moderator</b>
Thor Prichard is President & CEO of Clarity Innovations, a professional services firm that specializes in helping corporations and learning organizations improve the practice and process of teaching and learning with technology. Recent clients include Intel Education, Math Learning Center, Bellingham Schools, ScholarCentric, and Learning.com.
Thor’s focus is on finding promising technologies that match the needs of the education industry 3-5 years from now. Over the last two decades, he’s worn many hats on both sides of the equation, including as executive director of a regional consortium in charge of software licensing for schools. Thor holds a BA in cognitive psychology from Reed College in Oregon. |

Real World HTML5, CSS3, Javascript -- All API Driven
Roll back
| description |
<p>The dream of web services lies in deploying rich web applications without having to render anything on a server first. You don't need Wordpress, Ruby on Rails, or any complex deployments to deliver powerful and sexy interactive experiences. You just need a bit of Javascript, and a lot of CSS.<br>
This is walkthrough of a real production app composed entirely of static resources (html pages, css, javascript) with NO SERVER CODE, other than the APIs it talks to.</p>
<p>This is a true separation-of-concerns architecture, and we learned a lot by developing this.</p>
<ul>
<li>How to use Compass/SASS to quickly generate CSS* How we used Middleman to write our HTML using SLIM</li>
<li>Using some HTML5 tricks to make layout simple</li>
<li>How we render everything on the fly using HTML templates (Handlebars)</li>
<li>What is backwards compatible, and what gracefully degrades</li>
<li>Really, REALLY sexy page transitions (ala github file browsing) using CSS3 (and a bit of Javascript)</li>
<li>How we made everything work on mobile devices with almost no work at all</li>
<li>Why we designed everything this way in the first place, and why you should too</li>
</ul><p>This meetup with feature snacks, provided again by Vitamin T, and more (better) book giveaways!</p> |

<p>This meetup will feature snacks by Vitamin T, a book giveaway, and everyone who wants one will get a $50 MongoHQ credit.</p>

Roll back

Alternative to PDX Weekly Hackathon.
Come hang out and write code in a quieter, less crowded environment with your fellow nerds.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
The place is smaller, so finding the nerd herd shouldn't be too difficult. |

About the Talk - Thinking Like the Enemy
============
In this talk I will help you get into the Hacker's mindset from my ten years of experience as a penetration tester, assessing some of the most exciting applications in the world.
This talk will cover the most important qualities of a hacker or security tester, Top Vulnerabilities that you can't afford to miss as well as more difficult to tackle vulnerabilities that have caused tons of headaches and pain. By the end of the hour you'll better understand how to cause your application true pain, find a tiny weakness and cause the walls of security to crumble around it. After that we'll also talk about how to rebuild those walls to be more robust.
