Hadoop and Data Science Meetup
Roll back

This month's meet up will start with discussion of news items related to data science and big data led by William Taylor.
Presentation this month by Temese Szalai.
Title: Asking Questions About Big Data: A Basic How-To For Framing Problems When Working With (Unstructured Text) Data At Scale
Summary: Data is only as valuable as the questions we ask about it. The questions to ask need to be those that yield valuable insights, quantifiable results and whose answers lead to actionable information, i.e., help make a decision or meet the requirements of the people and systems consuming the analysis or output. Identifying good questions to ask and how to proceed with very large data sets is at the very heart of being a data scientist.
When working with large data sets, especially ones that are unstructured or semi-structured text data, asking questions and getting started is not always easy. In fact, it's sometimes the hardest part. Drawing on her experiences working with text data at scale, Temese will talk about strategies and methodologies for approaching this kind of data when doing initial discovery and analysis. She'll also cover some basic tools and techniques that are available and basic best practices. Although unstructured text data is a focus, the talk should be general enough to apply to analyzing other kinds of data as well.
Speaker Bio: Temese Szalai has worked as an industrial computational linguist/taxonomist for 13 years. Presently, she is the founder of Madarka, which leverages semantic analysis of large unstructured corpora for psychographic consumer segmentation. |

Personal Telco is a collection of individuals, businesses, and
organizations who share -- or plan to share -- internet connectivity
rather than hoard it. It's also a group of volunteers who want this

and uncensored. Personal Telco Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization in PDX.

Whether you're a technology wizard or technically incompetent,
volunteering with us is a great way to learn something new, enjoy
teaching others, or use your skills to do something useful!

Our annual members meeting happens in place of the monthly meeting in July every year. This year, we are holding an election for two positions on the board of directors. Only members may vote. Check out the website for details.
|

Come do strange things with computers amongst others whilst drinking fine Portland beer. Look for the row of geeks with computers in the back of the main room.
All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.
You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment.
Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play. |

OEN Workshop: From Garage to an Office - Everything an Entrepreneur Needs to Know about Leasing Space
Roll back
description |
nil |

Besides employee payroll, "Office, Industrial, or Retail Space" is usually a company's highest business expense. Yet many young companies put this on the back burner and deal with their space needs at the last minute.
This workshop will cover what you need to know when your company is growing and you are ready to take the next step for new space or ready to expand/relocate from your current location. This session will help you plan, as well as begin thinking of future space needs so you do not lose your leverage with landlords or get thrown into a space that will cost you and your investors money that could and should be used towards other business expenses.
Topics covered in this session will be:
Timeline for the real estate process
Lease terms
Typical length of leases and expectations for Tenant Improvements
Costs the Landlord should pick up, NOT the company
Costs other than the rent you should expect
Typical steps during the real estate process
Presenter: Josh Schweitz
Josh Schweitz is in the 13th year of his commercial real estate career, and is dedicated to providing the best service and value for his clients. During his career, he won the Commercial Association of Realtors' "Rookie of the Year" award, was listed as one of Oregon Business Magazine's 2003 top ten "Up-and-Coming Brokers," and ranked among Costar's top 20 "Power Brokers." Josh has successfully negotiated over 2.9 million square feet in office/flex transactions worth approximately $245 million in consideration. Josh focuses on high tech, creative, communications, and advertising companies and has been very involved with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network, serving on their board in 2006.

OEN Webinar Series: Life in an Incubator: Homeschool Snowboarding
Roll back
description |

According to Business Incubation Works, "Business incubators reduce the risk of small business failures. Historically, NBIA* member incubators have reported that 87 percent of all firms that have graduated from their incubators are still in business."
In this webinar series, OEN will explore the ups and downs of starting a company in an incubator.
What really happens within start up incubators? Do they help companies become successful or at least get over certain challenges? What type of companies and people find the incubator experience to be a positive? Are there downfalls to going through the experience?
These are just a few of the questions you can ask Daniel Clancey who grew his successful company in an incubator.
Want to submit your questions ahead of time? Email them to Larry Williams at [email protected] for the next session.

It's no secret that the cloud is growing - and fast. But where is it going in such a hurry? What can we expect (and prepare ourselves for) in the years to come?Â
Â
Join us on Thursday evening (7/19) on the gorgeous Wieden + Kennedy rooftop for drinks, networking and a special discussion on the future of the cloud. The short discussion will be led by cloud evangelists Ben Kepes (@benkepes) and Krishnan Subramanian (@Krishnan), and moderated by TechCrunch's enterprise reporter, Alex Williams (@alexwilliams). From Hobbits to heterogeneous infrastructure, we'll take a look at where the cloud is going and what it will look like when it gets there.
Â
Stick around after the talk, mingle, and catch the breathtaking Portland sunset like you've never seen it before. |

We're sprinting to create a draft of the [Data Wrangling Handbook](http://handbook.schoolofdata.org/en/latest/index.html), which is a supporting text for the [School of Data](http://schoolofdata.org/). The School of Data will be a place where anyone anywhere can learn how to find, clean, analyze, and communicate with data.
If you plan to attend please [sign up on the etherpad](http://schoolofdata.okfnpad.org/handbooksprint).
The School of Data is a partnership between the [Open Knowledge Foundation](http://okfn.org/) and [Peer 2 Peer University](https://p2pu.org/en/), with the goal of making open data accessible to everyone. |
