Mobile Portland: Mobile Apps for Coffee Farmers: 10 Lessons Learned in the Field
Roll back
description |
It's hard to build mobile apps. But it's even harder to build
them them for people very different from yourself â in this case,
coffee farmers in Tanzania. How do you go about building an app
for someone who's never before used a computer, smartphone, or
tablet? How do you convince a farmer to use your app when you
speak different languages, come from different contexts, and
have different needs? How can you ensure that your app is
creating a lasting, positive impact?
This month's Mobile Portland presentation shows how Sustainable
Harvest Coffee Importers faced these challenges, and what they
learned along the way. After deploying iOS apps and mobile
-optimized websites in coffee-growing communities around the
world, Sustainable Harvest has plenty to share. You might be
surprised how lessons learned in places like Moshi, Tanzania and
San Ignacio, Peru apply to Portland, Oregon.
Discussed:
* Developing for audiences who are new to mobile (and computers in
general)
* Deploying technology solutions in distant countries
* Choosing between and maintaining iOS/native and mobile-optimized
web app platforms
* Helping farmers have more sustainable
livelihoods, supported by mobile technology
Join us to learn about Sustainable Harvest's successes â and
challenges â in bringing mobile technology to coffee
cooperatives and farmers around the world. |

description |
Online Startup Summer Camp for entrepreneurs is brought to you by OTBC, OEN, TiE, Startup Weekend, SAO, and OAF. This event is one of the (optional) weekly meetups.
This summer, you can take your idea and go through the steps to launch your startup and build an investor pitch, while getting feedback and meeting lots of people.
FORMAT: We'll post weekly online videos each of which covers a key task that's one aspect of preparing for an investor pitch. Week by week, you'll build a pitch deck, while developing and validating your business model.
Participants can ask questions online. In fact, you can do the entire boot camp, online, on your schedule (we know schedules are a challenge during the summer). |

MST3K-style movie mocking of Twilight
Roll back
description |

"A glorious pairing of movies and comedy"--Entertainment Weekly
"A truly awesome experience!"--Gawker
"Hilarious comedians in front of your eyes, riffing on the movie way better than you and your friends ever could hope to."--Seattlest
"The Twilight series is a particular specialty of Master Pancake Theater" -- Popwatch
"An essential Austin experience" -- Austin Monthly
Smart, fast, and bust-a-gut funny, Master Pancake Theater's comedy (think MST3K mixed with Beavis and Butthead) has lead to years of sold out shows at the legendary Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. The members of Master Pancake provide live comedy along with the movie, as well as hilarious skits and competitions. Now they're coming to Seattle's SIFF Cinema at the Uptown for a live skewering of the Pacific Northwest's greatest contribution to cinema, TWILIGHT!
This Lost Boys rehash about a teenager who moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest and falls in with the vampire crowd features Kristen Stewart as the new kid in town, and Robert Pattinson as the centuries-old kid in town. Kidding aside, the acting is surprisingly good: Stewart is masterful at her one facial expression, and Pattinson has perfected the pale dead-guy mystique that he honed as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter series. And if you thought you'd seen every vampires-playing-baseball cliché in the book, just wait 'til you see how director Catherine Hardwicke breathes new life into that tired set piece.
Come out to Cinema 21 and let the bloodletting begin as Master Pancake sucks the life out of this preposterously ghastly modern teen "classic"!

Come out to Cinema 21 and let the bloodletting begin as Master Pancake sucks the life out of this preposterously ghastly modern teen "classic"!

This is the inaugural meeting of the PDX Inform 7 Interest Group.
As our name implies, our principal interest is in the Interactive Fiction authoring language Inform 7. Inform 7 is designed to let anyone, programmer or no, write Interactive Fiction quickly and easily. You probably won't be surprised to learn that we are also interested in Interactive Fiction in general, in other Interactive Fiction authoring tools, and in most any related interesting topics.
For our first meeting, I (Bart Massey) will lead a little bit of introductory discussion about Inform 7, and we'll make plans for future meetings and projects. |

Re-Thinking Business: Staying relevant in a new era.
Engage or die. The social web has changed consumer expectations and empowered them with real-time information and a digital soapbox. They are your customers and your employees. In todayâs noisy marketplace with low switching costs, they can leave you at any time. To stay competitive, companies must create a culture of respect and openness, build a strong brand, and emotionally engage their community. In the land of 'me too' companies what you stand for and how you interact is your differentiator. |

Come hear from Geoff Lewis, Principal at Founders Fund and Scott Kveton, CEO/Founder of Urban Airship as they sit down for a casual "Fireside Chat" this August in Portland. They will take 20-30 minutes to talk, and then take questions from the audience for the remaining time. And of course, since this is Portland, there will be beer.
There's a lot to learn from these guys and we're thrilled to see this event coming together for the community here in Portland. |

But first, he's going to take some time Monday night to meet with us all at Urban Airship and shed some light on something. Panelists include leadership from Ninkasi Brewing Company, Seven Bridges Winery, and Bull Run Distillery. Kerry Finsand, CEO of Taplister will be moderating.
Come hear experienced entrepreneurs share their unique insights into developing quality products, arranging supply channels, and maneuvering regulatory requirements, among other topics.
Speakers:
Ninkasi Brewing Company â Nikos Ridge, President and CEO
Ninkasi Brewing began on June 15th, 2006 when Jamie Floyd and Nikos Ridge spent 17 hours brewing their first batch of Total Domination IPA in leased space inside a German restaurant in Springfield, Oregon. Once a brewery, the building was equipped with a 15 barrel brew house set up for brewpub brewing. A year later, Ninkasi moved to its current location at 272 Van Buren Street, in the Whiteaker neighborhood of Eugene.
The brewery now features a 50 barrel brewing system, and uses it to produce beer that is distributed throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, and San Francisco. The Ninkasi family of beers has grown from a single IPA (Total Domination) to include Tricerahops Double IPA, Believer Double Red, and Oatis Oatmeal Stout, as well as some popular seasonals: Spring Reign, Radiant Ale, and Sleigh'r Dark Double Alt.
Bull Run Distilling Company â Lee Medoff, President and CEO
Naturally pure water, the finest raw grains and sugar, precise barrel aging and an ideal blend of art and science. These are the elements that define Bull Run Distilling Company. Bull Run Distilling Company are producers of small-batch, crafted distilled Rum, Whiskey and an revolving collection of other unique spirits sold only at our distillery under our Temerance label.
Bull Run Distilling Company (BRD) was founded by acclaimed Portland distiller, Lee Medoff, and business partner Patrick Bernards in the spring of 2010. What began as a "what if" conversation over cocktails a few years ago evolved into a full-on crusade in late 2009. Hundreds of hours, a few business plans and a couple of emptied bank accounts later Bull Run Distilling Company became a reality.
Seven Bridges Winery â Kevin Ross, CEO
Seven Bridges Winery is an urban winery in Portland Oregon founded in 2008. We make rich, big, Bordeaux-style reds from Washington State fruit. We started small, at just 350 cases, and have expanded production to approximately 1000 cases/year. Our focus is on making quality wine using traditional techniques. We self-distribute through our wine club, tasting room, and to a few local restaurants and wine shops.
