update Calagator::Event 1250464072 OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit: The Entrepreneurs Journey Roll back

description From tech to food and onto science, our region's entrepreneurs are developing ideas and companies that are making a difference from both an economic development standpoint and the betterment of the society we live in. The journey from an idea or concept to actually getting your company up and running is never an easy one. It's one that is filled with ups and downs, victories and defeats, but the one thing that all of these entrepreneurs share is a passion for what they are trying to build or create. OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit is your opportunity to discover and learn about the incredible collection of entrepreneurs, across all industries that are making things happen in Oregon. These entrepreneurs all have a passion and belief in what they have built, but their journeys will both inspire and spark ideas within you. D'Wayne Edwards with Pensole Shoe Design Academy, Anna Martens with FreeRangePDX/Leatherman and Mat Ellis with Cloudability are just a few of the great speakers that are lined up for the event. As many of these entrepreneurs will attest, they couldn't have done it on their own. To that end, after the talks have completed, OEN is hosting an"Entrepreneurs Journey" trade show. The trade show will include the organizations, accelerators, universities and government resources that provide the support, mentorship and potential funding for entrepreneurs. All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc. You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too. Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment. Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play.

About the Speaker Victor Ng Thow Hing is a Principal Scientist working at the Honda Research Institute in Mountain View, Calif. description Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM Abstract: Anyone who has seen a few generations of computer technology knows that each generation brings in a whole new vocabulary. It seems like the same old thing but with all of the names changed. Why do they do that? It helps us get unstuck. That's the short answer. Each generation brings with it unfamiliar capabilities. It takes serious effort to find application for those capabilities and hiding the good stuff among the familiar just makes doing new things harder. In this presentation I'll describe my own lurch forward over the last two years. The web, which has been stuck in its own way, has busted free. Its a great time to try something new. Some of this is technology, some methodology, and some community. All of it impresses me. Let me tell you why it's important. Bio: Ward Cunningham programs every day at New Relic. description Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday! PRESENTATIONS * Kerri Miller: You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure<br> Adrift at sea, a GPS device will report your precise latitude and longitude, but if you don't know what those numbers mean, you're just as lost as before. Similarly, there are many tools that offer a wide variety of metrics about your code, but other than making you feel good, what are you supposed to do with this knowledge? Let's answer that question by exploring what the numbers mean, how static code analysis can add value to your development process, and how it can help us chart the unexplored seas of legacy code. * Jonan Scheffler will talk about Ruby's singleton/eigen/metaclass. * David Celis and Ben Weintraub talk about interesting performance issues. * ...and lots of great group discussions on Ruby-related topics. <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there! </i> Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday! * Markus Roberts: Ruby MRH (Most Recent Hangman) https://groups.google.com/d/msg/pdxruby/pi21nYUOLBI/A4E3y-LW-REJ * Jonan Scheffler will talk about Ruby's singleton/eigen/metaclass.
