Product Owners as catalyst for Agile Teams
Topic: Coaching and Empowering Product Owners
Format: Facilitated discussion by Chet Amborn
Location: Nolan Ryan 1 Air Huarache
Date: 6/11/13
Time: 7:45am to 9:00am
Overview:
The performance and empowerment of the product owner is often the most important factor in a successful Agile project. Chet Amborn, Agile Coach, has identified 5 key areas where Product Owners need help from their ScrumMaster in making decisions that will make or break a project. Too often, ScrumMasters overly focused on low level issues with the development/implementation team while the truly significant issues involving Product Owner decisions are ignored.

OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit: The Entrepreneurs Journey
Roll back
| description |
From tech to food and onto science, our region's entrepreneurs are developing ideas and companies that are making a difference from both an economic development standpoint and the betterment of the society we live in. The journey from an idea or concept to actually getting your company up and running is never an easy one. It's one that is filled with ups and downs, victories and defeats, but the one thing that all of these entrepreneurs share is a passion for what they are trying to build or create.
OEN's Entrepreneurial Summit is your opportunity to discover and learn about the incredible collection of entrepreneurs, across all industries that are making things happen in Oregon. These entrepreneurs all have a passion and belief in what they have built, but their journeys will both inspire and spark ideas within you. D'Wayne Edwards with Pensole Shoe Design Academy, Anna Martens with FreeRangePDX/Leatherman and Mat Ellis with Cloudability are just a few of the great speakers that are lined up for the event.
As many of these entrepreneurs will attest, they couldn't have done it on their own. To that end, after the talks have completed, OEN is hosting an"Entrepreneurs Journey" trade show. The trade show will include the organizations, accelerators, universities and government resources that provide the support, mentorship and potential funding for entrepreneurs. |

| description |
Come do strange things with computers amongst others whilst drinking fine Portland beer. Look for the row of geeks with computers in the back of the main room.
All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.
You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment.
Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play. |

#The Good Life Lab
##presented by Mikey Sklar & Wendy Tremayne
http://blog.holyscraphotsprings.com/
Mikey & Wendy live in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and have been homesteading there for the last seven years. They produces their own power, fuel, food, water and building materials. Mikey will be explaining how a little bit of embedded hardware can empower anyone to leave their day jobs and focus on the interests. Projects such as grease car temperature displays, irrigation moisture monitors, pulsed LED growlights, using machines to build with trash, fermentation controllers and recovering different battery chemistries.
Mikey is a open hardware developer who has been selling kits and has worked for Adafruit, Hack-a-Day, and Popular Science. This will be his fifth dorkbot presentation.
#Blending art, nature, and mechanics
##presented by Stephanie Simek
http://stephaniesimek.com/
Stephanie will be speaking about some of her recent art projects involving light, sound, and electrical components. She'll talk about her interest with combining disparate materials and pushing the limits of their inherent functional capabilities, like playfully incorporating circuitry with handwriting and the movements of Venus Flytraps. She'll also discuss her newest project, a crystal radio sculpture. Other topics to be covered include: synchronized swimming, the Golden Record, non-Newtonian lovers, and Cab Calloway.
Stephanie Simek has been living in Portland for 6 years, where she has been creating experiments with sound, performance, and sculpture. Throughout the month of June, Place Gallery will be exhibiting her most recent project, Radio Room.

CHIFOO Presents: The Future of Kick Ass Cars
Roll back
| description |
The program will begin with a review of Hondaâs user research and design research process while developing new applications for the companyâs 3-D heads-up display prototype. It will be a fairly candid talk showing lessons learned and how the team changed focus mid-way on design direction after learning about new things while designing. This included focusing more on the driverâs primary task instead of secondary tasks to help create a more engaging (âkick-assâ) experience for the driver.
About the Speaker
Victor Ng Thow Hing is a Principal Scientist working at the Honda Research Institute in Mountain View, Calif. He has worked on projects related to digital human modeling, intelligent systems, human-robot interaction, and now human-machine interaction in the car.

SPIN: Still Programming After All These Years
Roll back
| description |
Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM
Abstract:
Anyone who has seen a few generations of computer technology knows that each generation brings in a whole new vocabulary. It seems like the same old thing but with all of the names changed. Why do they do that?
It helps us get unstuck. That's the short answer. Each generation brings with it unfamiliar capabilities. It takes serious effort to find application for those capabilities and hiding the good stuff among the familiar just makes doing new things harder.
In this presentation I'll describe my own lurch forward over the last two years. The web, which has been stuck in its own way, has busted free. Its a great time to try something new. Some of this is technology, some methodology, and some community. All of it impresses me. Let me tell you why it's important.
Bio:
Ward Cunningham programs every day at New Relic. He continues to develop the unique data handling capabilities of Federated Wiki, a project rooted in his service as Nike's open-data fellow. Ward co-founded the consultancy, Cunningham & Cunningham, Inc. He has served as CTO at CitizenGlobal and AboutUs, a Director of the Eclipse Foundation, an Architect in Microsoft's Patterns & Practices Group, the Director of R&D at Wyatt Software and as Principle Engineer in the Tektronix Computer Research Laboratory.
Ward is well known for his contributions to the developing practice of object-oriented programming, the variation called Extreme Programming, and the communities supported by his WikiWikiWeb. Ward hosts the AgileManifesto.org. He is a founder of the Hillside Group and there created the Pattern Languages of Programs conferences which continues to be held all over the word.

Monthly Presentation Night for PDXNode
Carter Thaxton will be speaking on VoiceBox, "What can you build with nodejs?
Karaoke... that's what!".
David Manning will share about Node.js and ES6: "The next version of the ECMAScript standard (ES6) is due to be to be finalized this year. This talk will outline some of those features that are currently available in Node.js, and demo a few fun examples of what we can do with them."
Starting our evening will be a lightning talk by Andrew Winterman who will share his "flask-inspired microframework for nodejs", Demitasse, at New Relic!
Newbies welcome! We're hanging out from around 6pm on for questions and hacking. Talks will begin shortly after 7pm. |

PRESENTATIONS
* Kerri Miller: You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure<br>
Adrift at sea, a GPS device will report your precise latitude and longitude, but if you don't know what those numbers mean, you're just as lost as before. Similarly, there are many tools that offer a wide variety of metrics about your code, but other than making you feel good, what are you supposed to do with this knowledge? Let's answer that question by exploring what the numbers mean, how static code analysis can add value to your development process, and how it can help us chart the unexplored seas of legacy code.
* Jonan Scheffler will talk about Ruby's singleton/eigen/metaclass.
* David Celis and Ben Weintraub talk about interesting performance issues.
* ...and lots of great group discussions on Ruby-related topics.
