OWASP Chapter Meeting

| description |
<i>Kevin P. Dyer presents:</i><br><b>P0wning DPI with Format-Transforming Encryption </b>
<br>
Deep packet inspection (DPI) technologies provide much-needed visibility and control of network traffic using port-
independent protocol identification (PIPI), where a network flow is labeled with its application-layer protocol based on packet contents.
In many cases PIPI can be used for good. As one example, it allows network administrators to elevate priority of time-sensitive (e.g.,
VoIP) data streams. In other cases PIPI can be used for harm, nation-states employ PIPI to block censorship circumvention tools such
as Tor. There are many ways to perform PIPI, however, at the core of nearly all modern PIPI systems are regular expressions --- an
expressive tool to compactly specify sets of strings.
In this talk, Kevin reviews the state-of-the-art research on the capabilities of state-level DPI, then presents a novel cryptographic
primitive called format-transforming encryption (FTE.) An FTE scheme, intuitively, extends conventional symmetric encryption with the
ability to transform the ciphertext into a user-defined format using regular expressions. An FTE-based record layer will be presented
that can encrypt arbitrary TCP traffic and coerce modern DPI systems into misclassifying any data stream as a target protocol (e.g.,
HTTP, SMB, RSTP, etc.) of the user's choosing. What's more, this work is not only theoretical in nature --- an open-source FTE
prototype is publicly available and has had success in subverting modern DPI systems, including the Great Firewall of China.
<hr><b>Kevin P. Dyer</b> is a PhD student at Portland State University. His research focuses on building protocols that are resistant to traffic-analysis attacks and discriminatory routing policies.. Previously, Kevin worked as a software engineer in telecommunications security, web security and network security. He holds an MSc in the Mathematics of Cryptography and Communications from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics from Santa Clara University.

Please note that this month's meeting is at Urban Airship's new location in the Vestas building.
Two years ago, architect Miloš Jovanović shut down his building company so he could try something new. Despite his lack of technical experience, he went into the mobile software business. Miloš will tell us about what he has learned on his journey as a non-techical founder, including:
* networking in an unfamiliar field
* identifying your technical needs
* finding the right people to work on your project
* and the advantages of being non-technical
About Miloš
Miloš is an award-winning architectural designer and founder/CEO of SpaceView. He did the world's first LEED Platinum retrofit project. He designed and built 'The Shift House', which was featured in DWELL Magazine and received the Super Energy house award. He was formerly with internationally recognized GBC Architects and owner of Root Build Design and Root Energy Solutions, specializing in high-performance, energy efficient homes recognized in the industry for visual impact and styling. |

Remember to thank Puppet Labs for the food!
This meeting will be a round table of questions and answers, as well as time to hack on git-related projects and get help from fellow DAG lovers.
There is usually an informal "drinkup" after the meeting at Baileys Tap Room downstairs. If you are headed to the meeting late, we may have migrated there.
Would you like to present at a future PDX Git Together? Send an email to the [pdxgit](http://groups.google.com/group/pdxgit) mailing list and/or contact Duke at [email protected] .
Would you like to sponsor food or other stuff for future PDX Git Togethers? Contact Duke at [email protected] . |

Rather than posting content on many third-party silos of data, we should all begin owning our own data that we're creating. Publish short status updates on your own domain, and syndicate to Twitter. Publish photos on your own domain, syndicate to Flickr, etc, etc.
This is the basis of the "Indie Web" movement. We'll get together for two days to talk about what has been done in the field, and where still needs to be done. There will be workshops and breakout sessions the second day.
For some reading on the subject, browse Tantek's documentation of his projects like <a href="http://tantek.pbworks.com/w/page/21743973/Whistle">Whistle</a> and <a href="http://tantek.pbworks.com/w/page/21743425/Falcon">Falcon</a>, two projects he created as an effort to begin owning his own published content.

Galois Tech Talk: The Constrained-Monad Problem
Roll back
| description |
Presented by Neil Sculthorpe.
In Haskell, there are many data types that would form monads were it not for the presence of type-class constraints on the operations on that data type. This is a frustrating problem in practice, because there is a considerable amount of support and infrastructure for monads that these data types cannot use. This talk will demonstrate that a monadic computation can be restructured into a normal form such that the standard monad class can be used. The technique is not specific to monads --- it can also be applied to other structures, such as applicative functors. One significant use case for this technique is Domain Specific Languages, where it is often desirable to compile a deep embedding of a computation to some other language, which requires restricting the types that can appear in that computation. |

SPIN: Still Programming After All These Years
Roll back
| description |
Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM
Abstract:
Anyone who has seen a few generations of computer technology knows that each generation brings in a whole new vocabulary. It seems like the same old thing but with all of the names changed. Why do they do that?
It helps us get unstuck. That's the short answer. Each generation brings with it unfamiliar capabilities. It takes serious effort to find application for those capabilities and hiding the good stuff among the familiar just makes doing new things harder.
In this presentation I'll describe my own lurch forward over the last two years. The web, which has been stuck in its own way, has busted free. Its a great time to try something new. Some of this is technology, some methodology, and some community. All of it impresses me. Let me tell you why it's important.
Bio:

Pitch ideas, form teams, and build something amazing in 24 hours.
What should I bring?
Bring anything that you think will make yourself productive. You definitely need a laptop, but anything beyond that is up to you!
Are we expected to sleep?
The venue will be open overnight, but you can choose to sleep or keep working overnight! Please bring a pillow or sleeping bag if you feel that will make you more comfortable.
Are there any age requirements?
No, the event is open to all currently enrolled students.
What languages can we use?
There are no restrictions to what tools you can use (other than a few intended to prevent cheating, check the rules). If you use a language which few people know, you will have more difficulty getting help.
Some languages which are commonly used:
C#/XNA
Java
C++
Javascript
Objective C
Construct
PHP
Python
Corona
Will there be food?
Yep! We'll provide lunch and dinner on Saturday, a midnight snack, and breakfast on Sunday. The cost of food is included in your ticket.
Can I go even if I don't know anything?
Of course! Part of the fun of a hackathon is figuring out things as you go along. We'll also have some great workshops that you can attend. Or just hang out and have fun!
How big are the teams?
We suggest 3-6 people per team. 8 is the absolute max. You can be a team of 1.
Can I be on multiple teams?
Yes.
Do I need a group to attend?
We'll be forming teams at the event, so you don't need to know anyone beforehand. Just show up!
Is it possible to make an app or game in such a short time?
Yes! We're constantly amazed by the results of CodeDay events! Check out S.S. Halfling, and Running Blind, both games led by students at Redmond HS in Washington.
Are there any more official rules?
Check out The Official Rules.
How can I contact you?
Just email [email protected] |

PDXScala Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group. |
→ |
We'll have Tyler Benson from New Relic giving a talk about the recently released support for Play 2. Thomas will also give a bit of a walk through on setting up a new project with SBT oriented for newcomers. As we've been doing for a couple months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry. |
