You are invited to a Big Switch Networks & Dell OpenNetworking - Lunch & Learn in Portland on January 14th, 2020. Big Switch Networks CTO Paul Unbehagen will be speaking.
This interactive Lunch & Learn Session will cover Next-Gen #opennetworking and #cloudfirstnetworking. Hear from Paul and discuss with your peers how organizations are simplifying and $aving due to the modernization and cost benefits of #OpenNetworking with #BigSwitchNetworks and #DellTechnologies.
Big Switch Networks (BSN) is Dell OEMed and delivers a modern platform built on OpenNetworking and Cloud First Networking (CFN) principals. A Software Defined controller architecture with a powerful user interface that simplifies network operations and enables NaaS like never before. Network Packet Broker Security and Monitoring, Fabric Visibility and Orchestration in vCenter, Automation and Integration, Analytics and VM to VM path troubleshooting. Spin up your network resources at the same speed as your VMs and Containers, and deliver your Apps more rapidly!
There are significant CAPEX/OPEX gains that come with a Cloud First Networking (CFN) approach. This is because Software Defined OpenNetworking is simpler to operate and more cost-effective to build or scale than proprietary box-by-box infrastructures. Dell + BSN is simplified, virtualized, and modernized networking. Spend just a few minutes here:

The cybersecurity community is diligent when it comes to continuous learning and refining their expert knowledge, but the task is daunting when emerging technologies keep changing what it means to be secure.
Add distrustful individuals to the mix, and it’s nearly impossible to predict what the consequences of these threats will be.
Join your peers and our experts at InfoSec World 2020 Conference & Expo on March 30 – April 1 to not only address the disruptive technologies and threats on the horizon, but to create a plan for managing the people, processes and tools for how your organizations react and cope with these intrusive circumstances. |

What you need -- and don’t need -- to include in your story.
How to make your product’s value clear and compelling.

Women Who Code Portland - 100 Years of the 19th Amendment in Oregon
Roll back
| description |
Join us at Vevo for our first Networking Night of 2020 to celebrate 100 years of the 19th Amendment in Oregon! The U.S. Congress passed the 19th Amendment on June 4, 1919, granting women the right to vote. On January 14, 1920, Oregon became the 25th state to ratify the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment reads: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex."
While 1920 was a pivotal moment in the long fight for women's rights, the 19th Amendment did not grant all women the right to vote. Native American women had to wait until 1924, when the Indian Citizenship Act granted them citizenship and the right to vote, and it wouldn't be until 1965 that the Voting Rights Act addressed discriminatory practices that previously prevented many people of color from voting. The fight for equal rights continues today and will continue in future elections.
At the Golden Globes, Michelle Williams spoke about women voting in their self-interest. She said: "Women, 18 to 118, when it is time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest. It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. Don’t forget: We are the largest voting body in this country. Let’s make it look more like us."
For this event, we will host a presentation on the history of women's voting rights, followed by breakout sessions with group activities and discussion topics focused around the topics of women's voting rights and equal, accessible, and intersectional activism.
⏰ Agenda
5:30 - 6:00: Doors open + Networking Activity
6:15 - 6:30: Welcome from WWCode Portland + Vevo
6:30 - 7:15: Presentation + Breakout Sessions
7:15 - 8:00: Cake + Closing Remarks
📃 Code of Conduct

At the Golden Globes, Michelle Williams spoke about women voting in their self-interest. She said: "Women, 18 to 118, when it is time to vote, please do so in your own self-interest. It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. Don’t forget: We are the largest voting body in this country. Let’s make it look more like us."
For this event, we will host a presentation on the history of women's voting rights, followed by breakout sessions with group activities and discussion topics focused around the topics of women's voting rights and equal, accessible, and intersectional activism.

Women Who Code Portland - 100 Years of the 19th Amendment in Oregon

Community Manager Meetup - Let's talk about LinkedIn Events: Meetup.com replacement? Facebook replacement?

Please RSVP on Meetup.com
If you didn't notice, LinkedIn quietly added an in-person event feature to their core application last year. LinkedIn already provides an online community platform through their "Groups" and with this feature they now have support of in-person communities.
At it's most basic level, this new feature allows for Time/Date/Location, attendance tracking, and sending invites through LinkedIn.
How can community leaders and community managers leverage this tool to expand our online and in-person community presence? What are the pitfalls and missing features? Can we integrate or complement local community solutions like Calagator or other tools like Meetup, Facebook, Reddit, and online forums?
Joe Dunn has been evaluating LinkedIn events for several weeks and will be sharing his insights with a brief presentation. Bring your notes and observations on using LinkedIn for community building.
Agenda:
5:00pm - Welcome time
5:45pm - Presentation beings
6:15pm - Group discussion
This location is ADA accessible and located near the Max station on 2nd and Yamhill. Street parking is generally available in the evenings. |

Details
Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Portland Facial Recognition Ban? (Draft Ordinances)
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
*** Please note that this meeting is on the 3rd TUESDAY this month because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday! Doors open at 6:00 PM and will be monitored for access until 6:20 PM ***
Facial recognition technologies are now being implemented around the world. While some uses of facial recognition, like unlocking your phone, may be convenient, others allow your facial information to be collected, used, and shared, without your knowledge or consent. Both governments and companies are now getting in on the act, often with little to no oversight or rules in place. In addition to these transparency issues, facial recognition software programs have varying degrees of accuracy and have been shown to be less reliable when analyzing people of color, women, and children.
Because of this facial recognition free-for-all, and due to the fact that our faces cannot easily be changed, some cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Somerville, MA, have banned government agencies from using facial recognition. Portland city officials are also considering a facial recognition ban and are exploring going a step further in order to address use by private entities as well.
Smart City PDX is preparing two separate ordinances — one for public agencies and another for private entities — and both are tentatively scheduled for City Council hearings this spring. You can view a draft of the public version at https://www.dropbox.com/s/z989uxauygd0svr/Facial%20Recognition%20Ordinance%20City%20use%20%20-%20first%20public%20draft%20-%20November%208%202019.pdf
Hector Dominguez, the Open Data Coordinator at Smart City PDX, within Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, is working with other city officials to develop the proposed facial recognition ban legislation. At the meeting, he’ll share with us the details of what's currently in the ordinance drafts and will also explain how these rules, if passed, will work.
Bring your questions and join the discussion! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there!
Schedule:
6:00 PM: Doors
6:10 PM: Introductions
6:15 PM: Presentation
Speaker bio:
Hector Dominguez is the Open Data Coordinator at the City of Portland. In 2009, Portland became the first city in the United States to adopt an Open Data Resolution to encourage the expansion of the technological community by promoting open data and partnerships between City government and the public, private and nonprofit sectors, academia, and labor.
By attending this TA3M meeting, you agree to follow our Code of Conduct:

Coffee w/ Co-Founders with Jaime Schmidt (Founder of Schmidt's Naturals)
Roll back
| description |

Jaime Schmidt started her body care product business in 2010 primarily as a hobby. But it didn’t take long for this ‘maker’ to grow her business from hobby to enterprise. After catching on at local farmers’ markets and co-ops, her natural deodorants earned coveted shelf space at national retailers, and before long, Schmidt was being courted by global companies looking to capitalize on the trends in natural body care that she helped define. Today, Schmidt’s Naturals is a subsidiary of Unilever.
Schedule:
10am: Doors open/Networking
10:30am: Fireside chat w/ Jaime Schmidt
11:30am: End
::::Space is limited:::::
About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: As a business owner you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. Coffee w/ Co-Founders is a way to network with other Entrepreneurs to allow free flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |
