update Calagator::Event 1250470874 Elixir Games PDX - Architecture: It's Not Just for Skyscrapers Roll back

description This month we're going to take a look at the architecture of a couple open source Elixir libraries, talk about them, how they fit with OTP principles that Elixir inherits from the Erlang ecosystem, and device a strategy for how to bring the existing design into line with a more OTP-y way of doing things. We'll also discuss why that's valuable or desirable and start to iterate on making those changes together. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Special thanks to my friend Jeff Weiss and Puppet, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us. create Calagator::Event 1250470873 Legal Innovation Meetup Roll back

description nil
Greetings Legal Hackers:

After a too-long hiatus, we're back on track for an October meetup. We're moving to Wednesday this time (Oct 26) from 6 to 8 at the Jaguar Land Rover Technology Center at NW 14th and Quimby.

Our speaker this time around will be Alexandra Devandra, an attorney and legal design consultant who is also a co-founder of Shape the Law, the first Unconference for Lawyers. Alix will be discussing design thinking as a tool for lawyers and other legal businesses to build and iterate products and services.

We'll also be discussing ways to more closely align the work of the legal innovation meetup with the Oregon Bar's Futures Task Force, a new group formed to "Examine how the Oregon State Bar can best serve its members by supporting all aspects of their continuing development and better serve and protect the public in the face of a rapidly evolving profession facing potential changes in the delivery of legal services."

LIT-Lab members Leigh Gill and I will be serving on the Innovations Committee of that task force, and we'll be looking for help and input from the community to help meet our charge to identify ways for the bar to:

• Help legal service providers establish, maintain and grow sustainable practices that respond to demonstrated low and moderate income community legal needs;

• Encourage exploration and use of innovative service delivery models that leverage technology, unbundling, and alternative fee structures to provide more affordable legal services; and

• Develop lawyer business management, technology, and other practice skills.

Overall it should be a great session. Hope to see you there!

--John

update Calagator::Event 1250470869 Open Enspiral Workshop: Participatory Network for Innovation and Cooperation Roll back

description Open Enspiral workshops give people context, tools and an experience in open participatory systems, based on our lived experience of Enspiral. You'll learn how this network of 15 startups and 250 entrepreneurs developed and evolved. Josh and Billy will dive into the cornerstones of how we organise: agreements, **collaborative decisions making**, **cobudgeting**, **stewarding**, and **minimum viable governance**. The workshop will also explore the crucial cultural practices that underly our ability to work together in an open, participatory and collaborative way. Participants will have the opportunity to work on their own organisational design questions with these experienced designers and facilitators. Enspiral is a global network of entrepreneurs and startups working on stuff that matters. Its ventures and freelancers contribute income back to the core foundation and all decisions are made in an open and participatory way. There are no bosses and people come before process. The half day workshops explore how Enspiral organises. We'll examine the cultural and technical processes and practices we use to build the network and strengthen the ventures and humans within it. Participants will be able to work on their own organisational questions, with the help of experienced organisational design practitioners and facilitators. Workshop organized and lead by founder of Enspiral Joshua Vial, and director Billy Matheson. create Calagator::Event 1250470866 AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: Modern Agile. It's a thing. Roll back

description nil For years now, various smart people with bright ideas have been saying it's time to rewrite the Agile Manifesto. So far, no traction. Maybe that's a good thing. On the other hand, haven't we learned a thing or two in the last 15 years? And, what does it mean that Agile has moved the horizon of its influence well beyond software development. Yet another smart person with a bright idea has piped up, and you can learn all about the Modern Agile model here (https://www.infoq.com/news/2016/08/agile2016-modern-agile) and then come down and share your affirmation of the model or it's necessary improvements or stand up for the Manifesto we all love. There's an article, an interview, a video, and a graphic! No matter you're learning style, you can be gratified at the link above. As usual, we'll be in the back. We start at 12 and end at 1p. Those who attend shape next months topic. RSVP's are welcome but not required at [email protected].
