The IndieWeb movement is a global community that is building an open set of principles and methods that empower people to take back ownership of identity and data instead of sharecropping on 3rd party websites.
Join us in downtown Portland for two days of a BarCamp-style gathering of web creators building and sharing open web technologies to empower users to own their own identities & content, and advance the state of the indie web!
You’ll learn about ways to empower yourself to own your data, create and publish content on your own site, and only optionally syndicate to third-party silos. Along the way you’ll get a solid grounding in the history and future of domain ownership, Microformats, IndieAuth, Webmention, Micropub and more! |

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!
Agenda:
5:00 PM: Doors open
5:15 PM: Introduction
5:30 PM: Session begins
6:30 PM: Session ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?

Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No on-site parking available at this event.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No secured bike parking available at this event.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) May Happy Hour

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-may-happy-hour-tickets-44921186478] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for happy hour at Expensify on May 22nd.
There is always so much going on at work and in our personal lives. We are curious — how do you do it? This month we want to hear from you about balancing the stress of constant growth. We will spark the conversation with our prompt “How do you balance stress with self care?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
Introduction to Expensify, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Deborah Ivanoff, Life Coach, will share how to prevent emotional programming from hijacking your life.
Judy Ossello, Writerloop Consulting, President will talk about managing the stress of constant change, whether at work or home.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for
Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes, on the 2nd, mezzanine and 3rd floors
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: The building elevators are not up to ADA code (wheel in and turn around) but all of our floors are ADA. However getting to our floors via elevator is doable, just not up to code. Let us know if we should prepare for this.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No on-site parking
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: Yes
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?

May PMI Agile Round Table
Roll back
| description |
The PMI Agile Roundtable provides a forum for exchanging ideas, techniques and real world experiences (good and bad) in managing agile projects. Although sponsored by PMI, all roles and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to participate / debate. We value the variety of perspectives and levels of experience with agile.
This Month we're honored to have Adam Light presenting: Change is Hard! Lessons Learned from Enterprise Agile Transformation
Fast moving SAAS businesses use agile methods natively. The recently-published PMI Agile Practice Guide shows there is broad understanding of agile practice fundamentals. Yet agile transformation continues to struggle in traditional organizations. What lessons can we draw after 15 years of mainstream experience? Come share your own experiences and gain a higher-level perspective on the difficult work of leading Agile change in an established company.
Your guide for this conversation will be Adam Light. Adam led his first agile transformation as the director of a traditional PMO. His experience made him a believer in Agile. And he has since spent nearly ten years helping technology leaders lead change and overcome challenges to make their traditional organizations more productive, innovative, and humane.
Thanks to The Standard for providing the venue and to Adam for leading this discussion

2018 Spring Training: IT Security and Audit Symposium
Roll back

Spring Training
Day 1:
1) Keynote: Blockchain: More that Cryptocurrency: Michael Reed (Intel)
Presentation on the origin of blockchain technologies and its evolution to a key technology in pursuit of increased efficiencies and new business models. Is your enterprise ready for blockchain?
2) Micro Segmentation and Cloud-A blueprint for protecting your golden egg: Tyler Hardison (RedHawk Security) (EVENT SPONSOR)
3) Benefiting from PCI – Even if Compliance is Not Required: Bowe Hoy (Sword&Shield) and Mike Griffin (Circle K Stores, Inc.)
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) can be beneficial to your organization, even if compliance to it is not a requirement. PCI DSS features a number of valuable guidelines to help your organization improve its security posture, technology auditing, and business operations. This session will help you understand the key components of PCI DSS and how your organization can benefit from implementing it. You will receive practical lessons through case studies about organizations that have successfully implemented PCI DSS. Whether these organizations were required to comply with PCI DSS, or chose to adopt it – they became a better organization because of it. And you can learn how to do the same for your organization.
4) Certificate Security and Frameworks for a Public CA: Derek Thomas and Scott Perry
As the ubiquity of on-line shopping continues to amplify our digital environment, ensuring a trusted on-line transaction becomes critical to building the brand loyalty and experience once relished within the physical brick and mortar retailer. The ability to ensure a trusted and secure transaction is not new, however the scrutiny placed on that trust is at an all time high with significant changes in the issuing community and the scrutiny ensuing from the browser community for secure and reliable trusted certificates.
In this presentation, Scott Perry, Partner and Derek Thomas, Managing Director, of Scott Perry CPA, one of six licensed CPA firms performing Certificate Authority audits, will discuss the changing landscape of on-line transactional trust and the requirements of Certificate Authorities. The presentation will include a discussion and overview of an established but less known framework for evaluating and auditing the performance of Certificate Authority practices and considerations applied to evaluating the security of your on-line transactions.
Day 2: 5 Sessions: Various Presenters
5) Current Economics of Cyber: David Hobbs: Radware
Often we discuss the changing threat landscape from a pure technical or vulnerability picture, however this does an injustice to element of ease, cost and access to attacks. This presentation will provide attendees with an up-to-date picture of the rapidly changing landscape of attack tools and services, the buying criteria and locations for these the tools and ease of use. In addition, the presentation will provide an understanding of how the combination of the proliferation of these tools and their corresponding use has dramatically changed the dynamics of the return on defense strategies. This presentation will provide unique insight into the world of the Darknet, specific customer attack stories, new economic models of measuring security deployments and a refreshed look at how controls should be deployed going forward.
6) Cyber War Chronicles - Stories From the Virtual Trenches (ERT Report 2017): David Hobbs: Radware
From information shared by over 1250 companies on their top concerns, we talk about what happened in 2017 and predict the top trends of 2018 in cyber security. The first half of 2017 saw a continuation of some cyber-security threats, as well as the emergence of some attack types and trends. Ransom attacks, political hacks, and new dynamics around the accessibility and capability of attack tools have added even more challenges to security. This session will explore some of the latest evolutions of the threat landscape, through a combination of market intelligence, real-world case studies, and direct insights from those on the front lines of cyber-security.
7) OWASP Updated Top10: Alex Ivkin (ISACA Board)
A detailed technical review of the OWASP top 10.
8) The Value of Cyber Certifications: Alex Ivkin (ISACA Board)
9) Fraud Audit in a Digital Environment: Sarah Dalton: E&Y
CPE: 14 CPE
Cost:
Regular Pricing: On or After 4/20/18:
ISACA or IIA Member: $185
Non-Member: $225
We hope to see you there! |

AgilePDX Westside Cafe: How purely should agile processes be followed?
Roll back

How purely should a team follow their chosen agile process?
If you've ever struggled with holding the line on practices that don't support your agile journey, or you feel like most agile processes are too rigid and -need- to be modified; join us for an in-depth lunchtime discussion.
You've just started your agile transformation, or perhaps a couple of years into it, then feel the tug back into the way things have "always been done." The arguments seem logical. Should you change your process to match your company or should you stick to your agile process? What disadvantages are there for making Agile fit into a company’s needs?
Maybe you are doing project work instead of product work. Perhaps your industry is heavily regulated or hardware centric. It's unclear how pure agile would fit your situation. Is ‘some’ Agile better than none or is it dangerous? How do you identify when you are losing the benefits of Agile as you try to adapt it to your situation?
Or possibly you are just the opposite, you've been successful when others were sure agile wouldn't work! Come and learn from your peers about when and how to protect your agile practice. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) May Happy Hour
Roll back
| description |
Judy Ossello, Writerloop Consulting President, will talk about managing the stress of constant change, whether at work or home.
A: Yes
Q. Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Please note there may be office pets present at this event.

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by Matt Scharr, Sr. Technical Program Manager, and Ramya Krishnamoorthy, Sr. Software Development Engineer at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 20. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!
Agenda:
5:00 PM: Doors open
5:15 PM: Introduction
5:30 PM: Session begins
6:30 PM: Session ends

Want to sharpen your Microsoft Excel skills? Talk with other Excel lovers? Join us for another meeting with Oz du Soleil, Microsoft Excel MVP.
At this meeting Oz will provide another deep dive into Power Query and the ways Excel and Power Query work together. There's a lot that Power Query simplifies. It's eliminated the need for some things that were only possible with VBA coding BUT some things remain easier to do in native Excel and damned hard in Power Query. At this meeting, we'll dig into this.
Please RSVP for this event on the Meetup.com page. |
