create Calagator::Event 1250473874 CNPDX June: Oauth All The Things Roll back

description nil Please RSVP to this event via Meetup.com if you have an account there! For June's meetup, we're talking about a technology/API that everyone designing microservices will need to deal with sooner or later: OAuth. Or speaker is Aaron Parecki of Okta. "The OAuth 2.0 authorization framework has become the industry standard in providing secure access to web APIs. OAuth allows users to grant external applications access to their data, such as profile data, photos, and email, without compromising security. However, OAuth can be intimidating when first starting out. In this talk, Aaron Parecki will break down the various OAuth workflows and provide a simplified overview of the framework, highlighting a few typical use cases." We will also have a brief update on what's coming in Kubernetes 1.11, by Josh Berkus of Red Hat. This meetup is hosted and sponsored by Mozilla!

create Calagator::Event 1250473872 Nike Tech Talks Roll back

description nil Join Eric Baer, Director of Software Development at Formidable, Inc., at the next Nike Tech Talks on June 14! Eric will give a talk on The Evolution of API Design from RPC to GraphQL. Food and beverages will be served, and there will be time to network before and after the talk. About Eric: Eric has been developing products for over ten years in everything from embedded systems for high-end audio products to high-traffic APIs in Java. For the past six years, Eric has developed a deep specialization in JavaScript and the associated ecosystem. In his current role, Eric is an O'Reilly author, a conference speaker and Director of Software Development at both Formidable and at Livestock Nutrition Center, where he is driving large projects and writing software around Babel, GraphQL and i18n. About the Talk: Over the last 60 years, API designs have changed to respond to everything from new network topologies and new languages, to the pressures of managing ever larger code bases. Today’s most popular API pattern, REST, was developed in a time where the cost of making API requests was plummeting. At the time, bandwidth was getting cheaper, latency was dropping, and the computing power of devices was still tracking Moore’s Law. Mobile turned this on its head. The environments in which apps and APIs need to perform today have effectively regressed a decade. This talk will explore some of the new client-server interaction models that address today’s pressures and use history to understand the tradeoffs that we made at the transition between the previous designs. Eric will introduce major tools that are attempting to change the API landscape including GraphQL and Falcor. Since GraphQL is the dominant technology in this space, he will examine some of its functionality, touch on some of its syntax and present a live coding demo that shows off a GraphQL server from 0 to 1. Demonstrating a complete implementation in under 10 minutes will give a strong sense of what’s possible, and what kind of complexity burden a tool like this would impose. Spoiler: There is no silver bullet.

create Calagator::Event 1250473867 PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Women + Tech Summer Soiree Roll back

description nil ***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-women-tech-summer-soiree-tickets-46660516862] is required to gain entry to this event *** Join us for our annual summer soiree, brought to you by PDX Women in Tech and Women Who Code, in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girls Inc. and PyLadies, hosted by Wieden+Kennedy and sponsored by Cambia! Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, a civil rights advocate, feminist and UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law professor specializing in race and gender issues, coined the term intersectionality to describe how people's various identities (racial, gender, class. etc.) intersect and overlap, creating a cumulative effect in the discrimination they receive. At this year’s summer soiree, we dedicate our theme to our proclamation that the future of tech must be intersectional. Otherwise, the technologies that are being developed today will not consider the needs of large swaths of our population and thus will not succeed. This night is dedicated to introducing you to leaders in the spaces of blockchain, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to demonstrate the accessibility of these spaces to the people of our community. We also hope to carve a path forward, together, where we can push for the change that needs to happen in these industries. To support this discussion our conversation starter for the evening is “how can tech be more accessible to underrepresented communities?” The summer soiree will feature a panel. To see full list of panelists, visit the Eventbrite link listed above. During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. About Cambia Health Solutions Cambia Health Solutions, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to transforming health care. Our company reaches more than 70 million Americans nationwide, including more than two million people in the Pacific Northwest who are enrolled in our regional health plans. Please plan to arrive on time to grab your cool beverage and get a seat, since the program will start promptly at 5:45. We will be giving away a PDXWIT tank to the first 100 people who check-in. Agenda: 5:30 p.m. - Doors open 5:45 p.m. - Introductions 6:00 p.m. - Panel Begins 7:15 p.m. - Networking begins Event FAQ: Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: Yes! Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Yes! Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes! Q: What is the parking situation? A: Street parking only Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Yes! Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

create Calagator::Event 1250473865 Ignite Your Business with a Powerful 90-Day Plan: Workshop & Lunch Roll back

description nil Are you satisfied with your business results so far this year? Do you feel focused and empowered in your business? Do you wish you had specific goals and strategies to hit your revenue targets? 2018 is almost halfway over but there's still time to make 2018 your best year in business yet! You’ve heard the saying: “Most businesses don’t plan to fail; they just fail to plan.” Well, it’s true. A winning sports team would never take the field or enter the arena without a game plan in place. Likewise, a business that operates without a plan operates is at a significant competitive disadvantage. Businesses move so quickly these days that it's no longer feasible to create long-term strategic plans. What is most effective is creating a bold vision, 3-5 year goals, and a specific 90-day plan. These 90-day "sprints" are strategically designed to keep you on- track and focused to meet your goals. Learn how to get the results you desire in your business by creating a Powerful 90-day Plan for your Third Quarter at the Ignite your Business Workshop. During this workshop, we'll cover: The importance of having written goals for achieving your dreams How to overcome resistance and blocks to planning (we all have them!) How to create a functional plan that isn't overwhelming and will actually keep you on track! How to reverse engineer a plan to reach your revenue goals in 2018 How to create more joy and ease in your business while achieving your goals Creating a bold vision to take you even farther than you can imagine! Attendees will receive lunch, our 90-Day Powerful Planning Guide, and Professional Technique to help you succeed with your business planning. Date and Time: Friday, June 22, 2018 from 11:45 - 2:00 pm Location: Old Spaghetti Factory (Clackamas) 12725 Southeast 93rd Avenue Clackamas, OR 97015 Tickets: $59 which includes lunch and a 90-day Powerful Planning Guide Seats are limited so register early! create Calagator::Event 1250473864 Documentary Screening: Closing the Loop - A Film About the Circular Economy Revolution Roll back

description nil Join us for a screening of this inspiring film about the future of business, and how business can change the future of our planet. Created by author, filmmaker, and professor, Dr. Wayne Visser, this film takes an optimistic viewpoint to climate change and innovative solutions. Date and Time: June 28, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Location: PSU: Smith Memorial Student Union: Parkway North 1825 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97201 Cost: $5 Going “circular” refers to the necessary change from our current take-make-waste linear economy to a borrow-use-return circular economy (sometimes also referred to as the zero-waste or cradle-to-cradle economy). The key takeaway message from Closing the Loop is that moving to a circular economy is not only essential and urgent, but also entirely possible, if we take inspiration from the pioneers, such as those featured in the film, and scale up similar business models, product innovations and customer solutions around the world. It will not be easy – and there is no “one size fits all” approach, as the varied experiences across three continents show – but the circular economy revolution is imperative. As presenter Dr Visser puts it: “If we don’t solve this one problem [i.e. moving from a linear to a circular economy], everything else we do, no matter how well-intentioned it is, will be like shifting deck chairs on the Titanic.” “After years spent working on sustainability, I am convinced that we are on the cusp of a major revolution – nothing short of the next industrial revolution. The time for fear-mongering and demonising companies has past. Now is the time for innovative solutions and positive action. This is nowhere more true than in the do-or-die challenge of creating a circular economy.” “We still have much work to do, but our task could not be more clear. So get inspired and, to quote Gandhi – a sustainability luminary before his time – be the change you want to see in the world.” Stay afterward for a brief discussion about the circular economy and how you can apply these powerful principles to your life and business. For more information about the film, you can visit www.ClosingtheLoopFilm.com. Event is co-sponsored by Consious Capitalism Portland and MonicaBourgeau.com.

description nil <p>This Friday's Open Hack Night is a little different. We hope you all can join us!</p> <p>===============================================</p> <p>Wild Me is a Portland non-profit that uses artificial intelligence to study endangered species. Right now, they’re performing a country-wide census of Grevy’s zebras and reticulated giraffes in Kenya called the Great Grevy’s Rally using nothing but photographs:</p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLw_I1ghvLM" class="embedded">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLw_I1ghvLM</a></p> <p>Hundreds of Kenyan tourists, biologists, and citizen scientists helped by taking all of these photos, but now their A.I. needs our help. They are teaching the A.I. to better identify zebras and giraffes in photos through a nice web interface where humans look at pretty pictures and match animals. Every decision we make will either make the population estimate go up or down, directly influencing the count! We'll see lots of original photos of African wildlife, genuinely help with conservation and science in Kenya, and maybe learn a thing or two about machine learning, computer vision, and convolutional neural nets in the process.</p> <p>For your scientific contributions, there will be pizza!</p> <p>If you want to join us in training A.I. for wildlife conservation — or if you just want to look at lots of pictures of zebras and giraffes while eating pizza — please bring a device that can connect to WiFi and run a Chrome or Safari web browser. Wild Me's non-profit staff will be here to hang out, participate, and guide us along.</p> <p>===============================================</p> <p>Every Second Friday is Open Hack Night here at ^H. Come hangout with us at the most happening (and productive) place in town! Hackerspace activities encompass Hardware, Software, Crafting/Textiles, all the Realities (Real, Virtual and Augmented), Infosec, Audio/Video, Cryptocurrencies, Gaming, you name it - if it's technology then it's in scope. Our Hackerspace is a place where people with an interest in computing or technology can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. There is plenty of table space, bandwidth and 3D printers (for those looking to try that out). Bring your ideas, works in progress, or something to show off. We'll see you there!</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250473862 Galois Tech Talk: Reasoning about Critical Systems using Refinement Roll back

description nil Abstract: Verification is often the dominant cost in the design of critical systems. In this talk, we advocate the use of refinement to reason about critical systems. The idea is that a system is correct if all of its observable behaviors are allowed by an abstract system that acts as the specification. For example, to verify a microprocessor using refinement, one shows that it implements its instruction set architecture. We provide a general introduction to refinement and motivate the need for various notions of refinement. We present various techniques and methods that have been developed to facilitate mechanized reasoning. We discuss the use of refinement for reasoning about distributed systems and hardware. Bio: Pete Manolios is a Professor in the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern. Pete’s primary research interest is mechanized formal verification and validation of computational systems. Pete has served as an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES), as a member of the FMCAD, ACL2 and ITP Steering Committees, and is a member of the IFIP working group 1.9/2.15 on Verified Software.

description nil In all industries including the tech industry, there is a growing business movement in Oregon helping build healthy and equitable communities. Entrepreneurs, Millennials, Boomers, small and midsize companies, even nonprofits and NGOs are discovering how to positively impact the world and make a profit. The movement’s focus: the “Triple Bottom Line,” or People, Planet and Profit. These companies are called Benefit Companies, Benefit Corporations and B Corps and they believe and act differently than other businesses. In this hands-on workshop, we: -Give you with the business case for this model -Share with you why it is gaining traction across the state and across the country -Explain the differences between a Benefit Company, Benefit Corporation, and a B-Corp -Share insight from Oregon business leaders embracing this model and how it has helped them thrive. This session is facilitated by Tom Hering and MaryAnne Harmer of Benefit Corporations for Good.
