Personal Telco Project Monthly Meeting
Roll back

The Personal Telco Project actually still exists! Did you know that? Well, we do. No, really. We do! We are still here, helping educate and support people sharing their internet connections, for the 10th consecutive year. Will Personal Telco continue to exist in the future? Ah, now that is kind of up to you all. It *probably* will continue to exist, but it could be so much more if people like you that care come along and help out. Are you going to be that person? Or are you going to trust, against your understanding of the laws of physics, that an organization like the Personal Telco Project can persist without the continuous injection of volunteer spirit and enthusiasm. Be that difference. |

Open Source Hardware Users Group discussion
Roll back
| description |

There are people who get really excited about building hardware and Open Source. There are a few holes in the stack, and as a community we can get started on fundamental tools that will make things easier for all of us. Some topics that came up in the session on Saturday.
The tools for programming FPGA's are all proprietary let's design an open source FPGA, most of the patents are running out soon.
There are open source 3d modeling tools, but will they tell you where the center of gravity of your amature rocket is? That's an important thing to know when it passes mach 1.
Radio is awesome.
Look for an "Art of Community" book, or a tshirt that says "free as in freedom" amongst the dorkbot crowd to find the discussion. Don't worry if you miss this meeting there isn't even a listserv up yet it's a meeting of convenience as many of the people from Saturday's discussion are going to be at DorkBot anyways. |

Kick-off Party for the National Novel Writing Month.
This is the first of a series of writing events throughout the month of November, in order to help participants finish their novels.
We're asking people to RSVP.
Below is the official description of Nanowrimo
What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.
Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.
Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.
When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins. |

OEN Workshop - 10 tips to doubling your revenue every year, with Nitin Khanna
Roll back

Revenue and profits are, of course, the lifeblood of any business. One of the primary goals for entrepreneurs when they start a company is to get to a sustainable level of revenues and to get to profitability. Once those goals are reached, however, revenue growth becomes a prime imperative for most entrepreneurs, especially those hoping to raise capital or sell their company some day. How fast you can grow your revenues is a function of your industry, your products, and your resources but it may be possible for you to create a sales culture in which you can try and double your sales each year independent of those external factors.
In this OEN workshop, led by MergerTech CEO, Nitin Khanna, you’ll learn why exponential growth can be very good for your company and 10 tips on how to double your revenue every year.
Limit 20 attendees.
Speaker: Nitin Khanna
Nitin Khanna is the CEO of MergerTech Advisors, a boutique investment bank that facilitates mergers and acquisitions for technology companies with less than $100MM in revenue.
Prior to MergerTech, Mr. Khanna was the founder, Chairman and CEO of Saber Corp. a Portland based national firm focused on providing technology solutions to government clients. Mr. Khanna started Saber in July 1998 and helped grow it a minimum of 50% each year. Some of the highlights of Saber’s growth included the Inc. 500 award in both 2006 and 2007, the Deloitte Fast 500 award, and being #1 on Oregon’s Fastest Growing Companies list in 2007.
Saber's dramatic growth led to a significant investment in the company by Accel-KKR Private Equity in 2005 with an eventual sale of the company for $460MM to EDS in December 2007 (Saber’s revenues were $120MM and pre-tax earnings were $21MM in 2007). S
Mr. Khanna currently serves on the board of directors of a diverse range of non-profit, startup, and public companies in both the US and Europe, including Saber Swiss Holdings AG, NAVTEQ Advisory Board, Freewire Broadband, eROI, and ResponderLife. He is also active with MercyCorps and is a mentor to several entrepreneurs in the Portland area.
Mr. Khanna has a Master’s and Bachelor's of Engineering from Purdue University. He resides in Portland and with his children Natasha and Madox. |

Small talk about all things Smalltalk, the object-oriented programming language and environment.
This month's program includes a presentation by Brian Rice about Slate's Haskell-based descendent Atomo, and what features he'll be drawing back into Slate, including Smalltalk-oriented pattern-matching. Also, Slate is gaining general assignment syntax in a non-abstraction-breaking way using Slate's macro facility.
Finally, and intriguingly, a student, Max OrHai, who has been working on Dave Ungar's parallel Squeak VM, has a nice demo.
The meeting is in room 086-01 of FAB, known to some directional signs as room 86-01. This room is under the plaza between the Engineering Building and the Fourth Avenue Building, you may enter through either lobby and go down the stairs.
The room will open slightly before 7:00. Building front doors are open, but in previous meetings at this location have been locked at 8:00PM.

Transitioning to iPhone Development — A Progress Report
Roll back
| description |

In January 2009 at the height of the recession, Nat Sims talked to Mobile Portland about how his company was undertaking a radical transformation from developing kiosks and exhibit media for museums to becoming an iPhone app development company.
The presentation from Night & Day Studios was one of the most popular Mobile Portland sessions we've had. Nat and his team talked about their successes and failures in the App Store. They shared real numbers. They talked about the benchmarks they needed to meet to be successful.
Two years later, a lot has changed. The composition of the company and how teams are formed is different now than it was then. The retired fire house where they worked flooded causing them to wade through muck to save what hardware they could. The company grew smaller and at the same time worked with more people.
And despite all of the challenges, Night & Day Studios is still around. They have nearly 30 apps in the App Store. They've begun licensing properties as a way to ensure hit products.
Their latest product, My Very First App, is based on Eric Carle’s best-selling My Very First Books and is currently the top-selling education app for iPhone. They have another hit on their hands.
Nat will give us a progress update on their transition to an iPhone company. What assumptions did they make that were correct. What didn't work. And detailed insight into how their business has been able to survive and thrive.
About Nat Sims
Nat Sims is the founder, president, and Creative Director for Night & Day Studios. He has been a content developer and media designer for 20 years, creating educational software, interpretive plans, books, exhibits, websites, videos, electronic music, and games. Much of his career was spent in developing media for museums; Night & Day developed a multimillion-dollar visitor experience for the City of Tucson, and Nat worked with Threshold studio for over 10 years on exhibits such as The Life & Times of Woody Guthrie for the Smithsonian Institution. Nat was the CFO and Lead Designer for the Behemoth Corporation, a roleplaying and strategy game company, from 2004-2009.
Nat's background includes game development and graphic design. After completing a B.A. in interface design at Hampshire College, he earned his master's degree in Communication at the University of California San Diego, studying computer games in the context of cultural cognition. His daughter Hazel is almost three and has been a tastemaker for Night & Day since Peekaboo Barn. |

Galois Tech Talk: Databases are Categories 2: Refinements and Extensions.
Roll back
| description |
presenter: David Spivak
About five months ago I gave a talk here at Galois called âDatabases are categories.â The basic idea was that a database schema can be represented as a category C and its states can be represented as functors Câ>Set. In this talk Iâll refine that notion a bit, explaining that schemas are better represented as sketches. Iâll also show how, within this model one can: deal with incomplete data; incorporate typing and calculated fields; and perform queries, define views, and migrate data between disparate schemas. That is, Iâll try to show that the categorical approach handles everything one might hope it would. Finally, Iâll discuss a linguistic version of categories, called âologs,â and show how they may help to democratize information storage. |

Design Thinking: Integrating the Left and Right Brain for Better Decisions, Better Results

Everyone designs. Business people have focused on designing organizations to reliably generate profits. Today’s designers have focused on designing products and services to be truly compelling to customers. What is most compelling to customers though, is often not rational or logical. So designers have evolved effective and efficient trial-and-error approaches that recognize and accommodate rational and non-rational factors. When these heuristics have been applied to strategy and business modeling, it has produced businesses such as the Apple’s iTunes and iPod ecosystem. Design Thinking balances left brain and right brain decision-making, and when applied to strategy work often creates bigger win-wins for companies and their customers, than achievable through conventional thinking.
In this short experiential workshop, based on techniques used at HP, we will provide a brief introduction to the key concepts, break up into small teams and step through a facilitated Design Thinking exercise. At the end of the session, we will regroup to learn from each team’s experience with the process.
The Design Thinking approach is collaborative, interdisciplinary and highly relevant to anyone involved in the development of new products and services: product managers, engineers, designers, and marketers. The objective of this workshop is to provide you with the foundations of Design Thinking and launch your on-going learning on the topic.
Due to the interactive nature of the exercise, we’ll have to limit the number of registrants so register early to make sure you get to participate that evening.
A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.
