PDMA Learning and Networking Event - Voice of the Customer
Roll back

The Oregon chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its first 2010 Learning and Networking Event; "Proven Techniques Turning Customer Requirements into Successful Products! Using 'Voice of the Customer' processes to develop products that meet REAL market needs."
A major component of business success is developing products that meet customer needs and provide superior value. Meeting customer needs requires that those needs be understood. The "voice of the customer" (VOC) is the term to describe the stated and unstated customer needs or requirements. The voice of the customer can be captured in a variety of ways: direct discussion or interviews, surveys, focus groups, customer specifications, observation, warranty data, field reports, etc.
This program will explore the practical side of collecting and using the VOC. Frank Binnendyk, and expert in VOC and a founder partner of Customer Alignment Consulting will explain the basics of this market research methodology. Then, three representatives from companies that have used the VOC research will provide a users' perspective. They will explain why and how they did it; how they used the information gathered; if it worked well or didn't meet their expectations and what were their VOC lessons learned. Ed de la Fuente VP of Marketing from Aperion Audio, John Williams Product Marketing Manager from FEI and Robert Buxton a High Tech B2B Professional will present company examples. The contrast between these types of companies will provide insights into how a VOC program can be scaled and adapted to meet the needs and resources of any company.
After presentations by the panelists, members of the audience can express opinions and ask questions of the panel during the Q&A session.

How to Lie Like a Geek
speaker: Michael Schwern
Geeks have a special relationship with The Truth. Nothing is more important than correcting a falsehood, no matter how small, and nothing is more odious than not telling The Truth. Unfortunately, in speaking The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth, the meaning is often mangled and the end result is the opposite, a lie.
Weâll examine some ways geeks lie while telling The Truth, to themselves and to others, and hopefully achieve better communications, easier to understand interfaces and maybe some personal enlightenment.
Some examples include: Lies by omission, lies by precision, lies by irrelevancy, lies by design, lies with statistics and that most
dangerous of words âshouldâ as in âthe user should have realizedâ.
There will be cake.

As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the LuckyLab |

The next month of exciting Android developments in software and hardware. The Google-sold android phone from HTC called the Nexus One should be for sale. Android 2.1 should be released at about the same time since the Nexus One runs on that.
T-Mobile will allow customers to buy apps and add it to their cell bill instead of using a credit card. That will make buying apps that much easier. |

I'm unsure about two things:
If you cook your own food, are you supposed to leave a tip?
How many Portland Twitter users will emerge howling and scarred from PDX Breakfast's encounter with DIY Griddles?
The answers to these questions will be answered on January 14th, 2010, when we descend upon Slappy Cakes to make some pancakes and chat about personal injury law. |

Mike Downey was deep in the Flash world (Principal Evangelist/Senior Product Manager on the AIR/Flash teams) before switching to Silverlight. Now, he works for the devil (er... Microsoft). On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, we hear his story.
How does Silverlight stack up against Flash?
How does Silverlight Out Of Browser measure up to Flex?
How does media work in Silverlight?
Warmup - MVVM in Practice
At the beginning of the meeting our own Alexis Jasso will be giving a short MVVM demonstration. It will be an example of how to convert non-MVVM code into the MVVM pattern.

SPIN Seminar: Lessons Learned from Architecture Reviews presented by Rebecca Wirfs-Brock

This Rose City Software Process Improvement (SPIN) event is free and open to the public.
Networking @ 6:00 PM; Seminar 7:00-8:00 PM
Location: Beaverton City Library, Meeting Room A, 12375 SW 5th Street, Beaverton, OR 97005
<strong>Abstract</strong>
This talk reflects on lessons learned from preparing for, presenting, and conducting architecture reviews. Complex software projects often have quality problems and don't deliver all that was promised. Often such problems are the result of inadequate or inappropriate software architecture. Sometimes the biggest issues are technical ones. Other times, the biggest issue is that too much attention has been placed on the technical architecture to the exclusion of other essential factors.
A software architecture review is one tool that helps reveal architectural risks and strengths as well as uncover unidentified issues that need addressing. A software architect needs to compellingly present the software architecture and build confidence that key architectural decisions have been thoughtfully made. An effective reviewer needs to be skilled at quickly interpreting complex information, asking probing questions, and effectively giving advice. Both architects and reviewers can benefit from being aware of biases that get in the way of people interpreting information and tactics for overcoming these biases
<strong>Presenter Bio</strong>
Rebecca Wirfs-Brock, president of Wirfs-Brock Associates and IEEE Software's Design Columnist, is a well-known and respected software practitioner. She invented the way of thinking about objects known as Responsibility-Driven Design and is the lead author of Object Design: Roles, Responsibilities, and Collaborations (2003) and the classic Designing Object-Oriented Software (1990). Through her writing, teaching, consulting, and speaking she popularizes the use of informal techniques and thinking tools for architects, designers, and analysts.
Rebecca is a past board member of the Agile Alliance and one of the co-founders of the Agile Open Northwest conference. Most recently she reviewed enterprise architectures and major designs, developed courses on agile use cases, enterprise application design and developing and communicating software architecture. She mentors teams on agile design, object modeling, architecture, agile use case writing, meshing usage scenarios with use cases and agile user stories, and managing incremental, iterative projects. She practices what she teaches!
<strong>About the Rose City SPIN:</strong>
The Rose City Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) is a monthly forum for networking, mutual support, and promotion of effective software practices. We exchange practical experiences, ideas, knowledge, wisdom, and war stories about the technical, business, and human facets of software process improvement. The Rose City SPIN serves the software development community of the Portland/Vancouver metro area. Whether you work for a large company or a small one, corporate or self-employed, industrial or academic setting, you are welcome at the Rose City SPIN.

PRESENTATION
Drupal
What is it Good For?
by
Lev Tsypin
Drupal is growing leaps and bounds these days, powering everything
from ma and pa brochure sites to Obamaâs recovery.gov. Does this
mean itâs a great fit for any website? Not exactly.
Drupal has been defined as many things, including a content
management system, a web application framework, and community
plumbing. In some ways, this is both a blessing and a curse;
thereâs so much you can do, in so many different ways, that new
users are crushed under the weight of the options and lack of
clarity. In addition, all of that flexibility does come with a cost,
in terms of performance and conciseness.
This presentation will cover some Drupal basics including history,
core concepts, and system structure. From there, we will dig into
Drupalâs strengths and weaknesses, finishing off by discussing the
types of projects Drupal is best suited for, including specific
examples for each case.
My hope is that developers new to the platform will gain a better
understanding of when to approach a new project with Drupal, more
experienced developers will gain a bit of insight on when not to
use it, and non-techies will have some help in choosing a platform
for their projects along with an understanding why developers they
work with select a given platform. Please note that this talk will
not delve deeply into the technical details of Drupal.

The first walkthrough and meeting for the PDX Hackerspace - taking place in our brand new location (finally)!
The space is secured, I have keys, and we are good to go!
The goal is to show the space, and have discussions on where to go from here, now that we have space. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come, so come on down, and bring your friend. Be aware, it is completely raw right now - bare cement, wires hangingdown, etc - it will need a lot of work.
Also, we have no furniture at all right now, so if you have to sit, bring a chair, or sit on the floor. |

It's that time again! The CyborgCamp conference date will be in early May of 2010. That means its time to start planning!
This meeting is your chance to brainstorm on location ideas, sponsors and speakers. What kinds of topics are of interest to you? How has the idea of Cyborg evolved over the year?
We'll discuss volunteers and the wiki too. Come along, especially if you helped make CyborgCamp PDX '08 so excellent in the first place. Bring snacks and drinks to share with others.
This planning meeting will most likely be followed by general networking and fun at a local haunt.

description |

The January Meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We discuss topics ranging from client-side web frameworks, to functional and prototypal programming theory.
At this meeting we will be discussing two of the hottest new pieces of JavaScript technology: <a href="http://nodejs.org/">node.js</a> and <a href="http://code.google.com/closure">Google Closure</a>.
This will also be the JavaScript Admirers first birthday. Come join us to celebrate the occasion.
Feel free to join our mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/pdxjs if you too are a JavaScript admirer. Or visit our web site for more information at http://pdxjs.com/. |
