An Unconference is the inverse of a conference, in that thereâs no predetermined, pre-set schedule, agenda, or speaker lineup. Utilizing the concept of OpenSpace, this unconference is the coming together of participants, with no predetermined agenda or program, to have an open discussion and share insight in a place where experts and beginners are equal. You won't be lectured at, rather you'll leave with a better understanding of a topic and the satisfaction of being heard outside Q&A time.
The OpenSpace methodology is carefully designed to elicit maximum involvement and creativity in a constructive atmosphere. It is also highly flexible so that the content is entirely determined by you -- the participants. This is not to suggest that the conference will not have content or outcomes, for there certainly will be both. Achievement in the meeting will be totally dependent upon individual and collective responsibility to make it happen. The content is what each person shares, and the outcome is what we will all create. The event will be inventive, creative, productive and full of surprises.

Monday, October 17th, 7-9pm. Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, Mark Grimes, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop. Last month we had 3 coaches and 9 participants. We're expecting more this time.
The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why youâre doing this?
If related questions come up organically, weâll explore. These questions are where groups like âCollective Agencyâ started.
Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). Weâll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.
In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what weâre working on and what weâd like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.

tl;dr: Python Module Thunderdome, Pythonic Trivia, wear Halloween costume if you like!
This Tuesday at 6:30pm at Urban Airship we'll be celebrating October with the Second Annual PDX Python MODULE THUNDERDOOOOOME. We still don't really know what the rules are, but it was fun last year so we're doing it again. :)
In the Thunderdome ring so far we have: Nick Wilson, Dan Colish, Chris McDonald and Kyle Jones. Are you up for a round in the dome? Pick a module in stdlib or PyPI and bring a 5 minute Michel's Module of the Month-style presentation to the meeting. All are welcome to compete! If you want to make sure no one else is doing your module, let me know ([email protected] / @pythonchelle) what you're thinking and I'll find out.
After the module throw down, Rob Bednark has created a Python-themed trivia game for us to play!
*** New this year: The Dome is close-ish to Halloween, and some competitors have talked about dressing up like the module they're representing. Why not? Dressing up is fun, and fun things are fun. (Still not sure if a costume will affect the results.) I am going to wear my Halloween costume, which has nothing to do with Python or modules, but does include some fake blood and a couple props. I might also bring some Halloween candy. Feel free to wear a costume, bring some candy to share, or none of the above, but please do join us! |

Vision Planning for the Community-Minded

Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community.
Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you.
Monday, October 17th, 7-9pm. Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop. Last month we had 3 coaches and 9 participants. We're expecting more this time.
The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why youâre doing this?
If related questions come up organically, weâll explore. These questions are where groups like âCollective Agencyâ started.
Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). Weâll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own.
In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what weâre working on and what weâd like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions.
This event is free of charge. Vision coaching is available here upon request with free and paid options.
