Join Scott Bigelow, Back-end Developer at Augur, for an introduction to the blockchain and some common blockchain-based applications. Technologies, such as the blockchain and Ethereum, can provide new opportunities in the startup-rich ecosystem of Portland. Additionally, understanding these revolutionary design principles can help illuminate new ways of designing your own systems.

No previous working knowledge of cryptography or other supporting technologies is necessary, as this will be a ground-up introduction.

Speaker bio: Scott Bigelow is a Blockchain Engineer for Augur, a decentralized Ethereum project developing prediction market software. Since the late 1990's, Scott has been developing software and running large distributed systems, working in industries such as enterprise analytics, real estate, and mobile video games. His involvement with cryptocurrencies began in 2013 with Bitcoin and more recently with Ethereum and Smart Contract development.

Machine Learning vs Cryptocoin Miners Description: With the advent of cryptocurrencies as a prevalent economic entity, attackers have begun turning compromised boxes and environments into cash via cryptocoin mining. This has given rise for the opportunity to detect compromised environments by analyzing network traffic logs for evidence of cryptocoin miners. Specifically, I'll be reviewing various ML and statistical analysis techniques leveraged against VPC Flow Logs. This talk will not be a deep dive of the math involved but instead a general discussion of these techniques and why I chose them.

Speaker's Bio: Jonn Callahan is a principal appsec consultant at nVisium. Jonn was previously heavily involved in the OWASP DC and NoVA chapters. He has been working in appsec for half a decade now, initially within the DoD and now commercially with many high-visibility companies. Recently, Jonn has been digging into ML to find ways to bridge it and the security industry in an intelligent and usable fashion.

This is Oregon Blockchain’s inaugural conference. The Socratic Seminar events are formatted to foster debate, information sharing, and lively discussion. Inspired by other Bitdevs around the country, this is an event for those interested in discussing and participating in the research and development of Bitcoin and related protocols.


We'll spend the first portion of the event discussing technical components: pull requests in the Bitcoin Core, lnd, network statistics, research papers, technical blog posts, and other relevant content.


During the second portion, we will have a more broad-reaching educational discussion (generally in the form of a fireside chat or presentation), followed by feedback and Q&A.
To complete the meeting, members are free to present open-source projects, companies, research, and other relevant materials.

Jeff Booth is a Canadian Entrepreneur, Technology Leader, Author, and Strategic Adviser. In January 2020, Jeff released his now famous book “The Price of Tomorrow – Why Deflation is Key to an Abundant Future”. In it, he offers his provocative thesis about the current state of our economies and what must happen to enable a brighter future. Since then, he's become well known in the Bitcoin world, making the podcast rounds and providing a fascinating perspective on the global financial system. Most recently, Jeff co-founded and is the general partner of ego death capital, a Bitcoin ecosystem venture fund.

Troy Cross is a Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Reed College where he teaches courses on the philosophy of religion, color, and the philosophy of mind, as well as lecturing in the humanities program. Prior to coming to Reed in 2010, he held positions at Yale and Merton College, Oxford. Troy's philosophical research interests center on foundational issues in metaphysics and epistemology, but has also been involved in bitcoin for over a decade, cultivating interest in a number of bitcoin-related issues in that time, most of all, the question of bitcoin mining’s present and future environmental impact.
