David Brown is a global, go-to-market expert. He has over three decades of commercial marketplace success building and driving profitable brands and creating sustainable business models for future growth. He believes strongly in sales planning, analytics, and new business development, and has a critical understanding of consumer-based, diverse athletic and fashion products after working with brands like NIKE, Jordan, and Geox. David spent over 30 successful years at NIKE, including 4 years as VP of Merchandising where he focused on sales, merchandising and product marketing to grow retailers and distribution in an ultra-competitive marketplace. A versatile expert in his field, David has consulted for start-ups like Wildfang (Portland, OR), worked in international fashion for Geox, Inc. (Italy), and taught courses in Sports Product Management at the University of Oregon.

IFD Master Workshop – Entrepreneurship for Designers, with designer Matthew A. Rhoades.

An entrepreneur is commonly defined as: “A person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so”. But what does entrepreneurship really mean for individuals and businesses? Being an entrepreneur sounds amazing, but in reality, it’s a huge challenge.

This class is aimed at designers who want to form their own design agency, develop and sell their own products, or launch a start-up. Our 2-hour workshop covers how to build a business and marketing plan and how to build a team. You’ll learn about using internal and external resources, networking, operations, and the idea of how to work “on the cheap” to get the most out of everything you do.

Matthew A. Rhoades is one of the most accomplished and respected design minds in the Pacific Northwest. As a veteran of several global design studios and former Nike Global Creative Director, Matthew’s award-winning career encompasses more than two decades, 40+ patents, 6 world records, and multiple global design awards. Achievement highlights include an IDEA Gold Metal, a Newsweek “Product of the Year,” and designing the Trek Y-Bike, named “Third most influential mountain bike of all time.” In addition to his work as an industrial designer, he holds an MBA in Entrepreneurial Management and New Product Development and has spent over 18 years as an adjunct professor, faculty member and speaker. He is currently a De Tao Master and Professor of Strategy Design Innovation at the De Tao Group Masters Academy in Shanghai. His experience transcends traditional industrial design products, encompassing digital (UI/UX), brand strategy, cutting-edge innovation, new business strategy, and overall design excellence.

IFD Master Workshop – The Art of Color

Join textile artist Tricia Langman, founder of the successful international textile print design studio Spoogi, for an interactive look into color theory and color psychology. How do color trends emerge? How do you research color using the best process for your brand?

Explore color selection and how to apply color trends to your brand design strategies. Tricia offers practical advice for using color services like Pantone, selecting colors for digital platforms and social media, and using color in the retail space. Learn from case study examples and a walkthrough of the process Tricia’s studio used to select their colors for 2020.

Textile artist and designer, Tricia Langman, has over eighteen years of experience designing for prestigious fashion companies worldwide, including Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Halston, Kashiyama, Donna Karan, Nike, Anthropologie, Banana Republic and Target. Her work has been featured at the Met’s Costume Institute, and she recently created a limited edition collection for Pendleton Home as part of their guest artist series. Tricia is founder and owner of Spoogi, a successful international print design studio.

This workshop will help you create a strong visual start to your brand’s identity through color, texturem, symbols, type and more.

About Belle Bezdicek For two decades, printmaker, freelance designer and instructor Belle Bezdicek has taught students how to define their personal identities and design their portfolios. She has worked with clients ranging from government agencies to local brewers, helping to create their brands and clarify their messaging. As an artist, she produces limited edition prints and sculptures, which can be found online at Bez & Kin.

Alyson Clair and LaJean Lawson bring their deep knowledge and years of hands-on and market-leading experience to this workshop, offering an understanding of product design and development and key consumer insights for the current Curvy/Plus market segment. Highlights from this 3-hour course include biometrics of the Curvy/Plus body, fit/sizing, pattern-making considerations, and optimizing style/design lines. Think beyond the initial design to things like line planning, the implications of Curvy/Plus garments in the manufacturing process, and market size and trends. Finally, you’ll discover who the Curvy/Plus shopper is, and how best to communicate and connect with her, as well as trends to watch for in the Curvy/Plus market.

When it comes to the science and design of sports bras, LaJean Lawson easily qualifies as THE global expert. She’s the only person on the planet with two graduate degrees in sports bra science and more than 30 years of continuous consulting in sports bra design, development, and marketing. Most recently, her research has focused on understanding and meeting the apparel needs and desires of plus/curvy women. LaJean excels in making any subject matter fun, personal and easy-to-understand, and her energy and enthusiasm are contagious. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, she presently resides and rides a mean bicycle in the sports apparel mecca of Portland, Oregon.

Alyson Clair is a native Oregonian and graduated from the Art Institute of Portland with a BS in Apparel Design. She spent her first 4 years in the apparel industry working in a domestic factory, where she obtained practical manufacturing experience pattern making, grading, and marking. She has worked for international brands like Nike, Wilson Tennis, and Champion, with technical proficiency in compression, swim, and spandex. The fit is one of her passions, and she has expertise in Women’s Plus Sizing. Along with her technical design work, she has had a small women’s dress line made in Portland for the last 10 years, focused on knits. In 2014, she wrote The Colette Guide to Sewing with Knits and released their first knit sewing pattern range.

Building the Dream: Transforming Ideas into Reality, a workshop with global sales, marketing, and product management executive, Jim Chi.

How to do I make this? Join us for a nuts-and-bolts look at how to turn your idea into a reality. As you prototype a product then scale to go to market, how do you approach manufacturing and operations? Learn what costs to factor in, from financing to procurement of materials and distribution. We’ll closely examine sourcing, supply chain management, manufacturing and more. You don’t get to re-price something after you go to market. Learn to approach this the right way, with a comprehensive assessment of all costs, including planning for additional factors that didn’t quite pan out.

Global sales, marketing and product management executive, Jim Chi, has held leadership roles with notable brands and retailers like Nike, Home Depot, and Mohawk Industries. Jim started his career in product development and has led teams in marketing, sales, global sourcing, product management and operations. The key to his success across multiple industries has been using analytic-driven decisions as the foundation for creative business solutions. He is a firm believer in balancing the art of product creation and the science of product management. Currently working with early-stage apparel brands, Jim also consults for private equity firms restructuring and scaling up brands in their portfolio.

Sustainable Textile Learning Experience, a workshop with renowned textile artist, Tricia Langman.

Join Inside Fashion Design and textile artist Tricia Langman for a day-long program designed to take you on a practical and theoretical journey through sustainable and innovative textile practices. Spend the morning exploring the practical application of current and future textile and materials techniques. After a break for lunch, the theory becomes experience as you create and experiment in the afternoon. Students will make leather from a seaweed organic base, weave fabric and enjoy the opportunity to do dip dyeing using plant-based direct dyes.
