Description

Is it your dream to design for Curvy/Plus? Are you filled with ideas for this untapped, underserved and fastest-growing segment of the apparel market? Jumpstart your efforts with an inspiring and information-packed evening featuring two seasoned industry professionals!

Alyson Clair and LaJean Lawson bring their deep knowledge and years of hands-on and market-leading experience to this workshop, offering an understanding of product design and development and key consumer insights for the current Curvy/Plus market segment. Highlights from this 3-hour course include biometrics of the Curvy/Plus body, fit/sizing, pattern-making considerations, and optimizing style/design lines. Think beyond the initial design to things like line planning, the implications of Curvy/Plus garments in the manufacturing process, and market size and trends. Finally, you’ll discover who the Curvy/Plus shopper is, and how best to communicate and connect with her, as well as trends to watch for in the Curvy/Plus market.

When it comes to the science and design of sports bras, LaJean Lawson easily qualifies as THE global expert. She’s the only person on the planet with two graduate degrees in sports bra science and more than 30 years of continuous consulting in sports bra design, development, and marketing. Most recently, her research has focused on understanding and meeting the apparel needs and desires of plus/curvy women. LaJean excels in making any subject matter fun, personal and easy-to-understand, and her energy and enthusiasm are contagious. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, she presently resides and rides a mean bicycle in the sports apparel mecca of Portland, Oregon.

Alyson Clair is a native Oregonian and graduated from the Art Institute of Portland with a BS in Apparel Design. She spent her first 4 years in the apparel industry working in a domestic factory, where she obtained practical manufacturing experience pattern making, grading, and marking. She has worked for international brands like Nike, Wilson Tennis, and Champion, with technical proficiency in compression, swim, and spandex. The fit is one of her passions, and she has expertise in Women’s Plus Sizing. Along with her technical design work, she has had a small women’s dress line made in Portland for the last 10 years, focused on knits. In 2014, she wrote The Colette Guide to Sewing with Knits and released their first knit sewing pattern range.

This workshop will be held at the Wacom Experience Center.
