WikiWednesday: Wikipedia for Journalists and Bloggers
AboutUs

WikiWednesday is an opportunity to learn about wikis and how to use them for improved collaboration within an existing organization, for new ventures, or worldwide.

This month we will have an introduction to research with Wikipedia focused on journalists and bloggers.

The event will cover techniques for assessing the trustworthiness of an article, delving in to just who edited what, and other tip and tricks for gleaning useful information out of the world's largest encyclopedia.

A 30 minute introductory presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Wikipedia administrators Steven Walling and Pete Forsyth, and journalists Dan Cook and Abraham Hyatt (formerly of The Portland Business Journal and Oregon Business Magazine, respectively).

WikiWednesday - The Power of Naming in wikis and Wagn with John Abbe
AboutUs

This WikiWednesday we'll hear John Abbe, a key designer of the structured wiki Wagn (http://Wagn.org), talk about the importance of naming in your community. Cited by Joshua Schachter as clarifying his thoughts in developing Delicious.com, John will cover concepts of ontology useful for all participatory online spaces, not just wikis.

We'll be reviewing the history and background of the WikiNames concept (http://www.c2.com/cgi/wiki?ChoosingWikiNames), and the further space for creating meaning opened up by Wagn's "plus cards". Other probable forays include Pattern Languages (http://GroupPatternLanguage.org/) , including a pattern language of group process under development.

As always, WikiWednesday is open to everyone. Come at 5:30 for drinks/snacks and the discussion will start at 6:15.

RSVP on Upcoming: http://bit.ly/cC6kxm or at the PDXwikiWed wiki: http://pdx.wiki.org/Wiki_Wednesday_of_May_5%2C_2010

Smallest Federated Wiki Collaboration Session
PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment

Wiki-founder Ward Cunningham shared his idea of a Smallest Federated Wiki SFW during IndieWebCamp this June. In a few short weeks, he brought his idea to life and is inviting others to work with him on it! Come to PIE for a short hack session on "smallest federated wikis". Max Ogden will also be joining us from San Francisco!

What is SFW? The Smallest Federated Wiki project wants to be small in the "easy to learn powerful ideas" version of small. It wants to be a wiki so that strangers can meet and create works of value together. And it wants to be federated so that the burden of maintaining long-lasting content is shared among those who care.

Intro to Wikipedia, and open edit-a-thon
Collective Agency Downtown

In the first hour, Pete Forsyth will give a presentation and Q&A about Wikipedia: what is it, how did it come to be, how does it work? And, what's with Oregon's special kinship with Wikipedia and all things wiki?

After the first hour will be an open "edit-a-thon" - you can pair up with experienced Wikipedians to improve any Wikipedia article you like. Some suggestions: Portland's food scene, stuff that "keeps Portland weird", Portland area businesses and startups. Or even zombies. If you have reference materials, bring them along!

Event sponsors: Wiki Strategies and Prichard Communications.

Do bring a laptop, if you possibly can! If you don't have one, that's OK -- we may have a few loaners on hand, or you can just work with somebody else who has one.

See here for more details -- and feel free to edit this page with your ideas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Portland/February_2013 (You can sign up either on Meetup.com or on this Wikipedia page).

Local Wiki Edit Party
Multnomah County Central Library

Portland is overdue for a local wiki! Let's get it started! It's super user-friendly already. Even if you can't make it to the Edit Party, consider visiting localwiki.net/pdx and adding information about (for instance) your favorite cafe, grocery store, pub, non-profit, sidewalk art, little free library, social service, social movement, street, school, politician, neighborhood, or pub.

LocalWiki.net is in "insanely early preview" mode. Local Wiki originally started in Davis, California, where the DavisWiki is now used regularly by nearly everyone in the city.
