Agile Fluency® Game night – Agile Fluency Project Come play the Agile Fluency Game! You’ll gain new insights into the benefits and trade-offs of adopting agile practices—and you’ll have a great time doing it. The Agile Fluency Game authentically simulates 2½ years on a software development team. It was developed so experiments in the game lead to new insights about your real-world options. As you play the game, you’ll make decisions about which agile practices to adopt. Of course, you have to deliver features, too! Or what’s the point? This is a great experience for agile team members interested in learning more about their options; managers and leaders wanting to better understand agile development; and people who enjoy modern board games such as Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride. “Saved us money on our agile transition effort by getting a preview in 90 minutes!” —Director, Agile Center of Excellence “Makes the need for best practices come to life.” —Manager “Played first game and beautifully painted ourselves into a corner through the same mistakes real teams make. How’d that happen? Powerful teaching.” —Senior Learning & Development Manager “[Our leadership team] experienced 20 years of agile learning in 4 hours!” —Director, R & D “The shift from playing the game gave new focus to our discussion of leadership challenges.” —VP, Product Management Doors open at 6pm. We’ll start playing at 6:30. Be sure to arrive before then: the building is secured at 6:30 and no further entry is allowed. To learn more about the game, visit https://www.agilefluency.org/game.php. CORONAVIRUS NOTE: We've been asked if we still plan to hold this event given the concerns about Coronavirus. We DO plan to hold the event, with the following precautions:

Agile Transition Simulation – Robert Half Technology, 2nd Floor Conference Room We're happy to announce that Elisabeth Hendrickson will be speaking to the Portland Agile Users Group on Wednesday the 17th. She's an energetic and informative member of the greater agile community who periodically comes up from the Bay Area to share her knowledge with us. Her talk on ATDD[*] last year at CubeSpace was great fun and well-received. This year she'll be taking us through an interactive simulation of an agile transition. When she ran this simulation at Agile 2009, it replicated a number of problems I've seen take months and years to play out on real software teams. Bring your team members! It's far less stressful to talk about problems in the context of an evening's simulation than in the context of three years of product development. Pizza is sponsored by YesMail of InfoGroup Interactive. Pizza and networking start at 6:30; presentation starts at 7. If there's enough interest, we'll go to a pub afterward for further discussion. Building Simulation Optimization – Ecotrust (Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center) ***Registration required, lunch provided: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5FRNCVZ?utm_source=July+2014+BESF+Meeting+Announcement&utm_campaign=July+2014+BESF+Meeting+Announcement&utm_medium=email July 16th Simulation Forum Building Simulation Optimization for Climatic Passive Heating and Cooling Design: Advanced Materials, Workflows, and Tools Jeremiah Crossett, Senior Analyst, Phase Change Energy Solutions Inc. and Founder of NRGSIM Inc. and Eric Youngson, President and Founder of Succession Ecological Services (SES) Modern low energy buildings require innovative strategies that maintain occupant comfort while reducing energy consumption through the use of passive systems and sophisticated materials. Historically, building design has focused on active systems that increase complexity, drive costs higher, and result in environmental degradation. This presentation focuses on early load reduction that allows for smaller, more efficient mechanical systems through the optimization of building envelope design. Through the use of Pareto front analysis, designs are able to achieve optimal combinations of window, insulation, and phase change material (PCM) to achieve a desired balance between energy performance and cost objectives for various climate zones. New tools developed in part by the presenters will be demonstrated using the jE+ EA cloud optimization Energy Plus shell, the "Eppy" Python scripting package, and a custom version of Energy Plus with enhanced PCM features. In addition, a brief demonstration of the NRGSIM web based energy modeling application will be provided. |

Coaching for Results with the Agile Fluency™ Game through Play the Game Join James Shore and Diana Larsen, authors of "The Agile Fluency™ Model: A Brief Guide to Success with Agile," for a two-day Coaching for Results with the Agile Fluency Game Workshop at the Agile Fluency Project offices in Portland, Oregon. The Agile Fluency Game provides a rich platform for learning about the benefits and trade-offs of adopting agile practices. You can use this physical, euro-style board game simulation to create stand-alone exercises or as part of a coaching/consulting practice, engineering leadership programs, or a larger training course. Learn how, as you create your own custom play-book from a series of mini-workshops using the game materials. You will receive your own copy of the Agile Fluency Game and learn its secrets. Then you’ll move beyond game facilitation as you gain the knowledge to design powerful interactive learning experiences. For more about the game, visit: https://www.agilefluency.org/game.php . |

Galois Tech Talk: Roll Your Own Test Bed for Embedded Real-Time Protocols: A Haskell Experience – Galois, Inc The next talk in the Galois Tech Seminar series:
For details (including an abstract and speaker bio), please see our blog post: http://www.galois.com/blog/2009/09/29/pike-haskell0/ Abstract: We present by example a new application domain for functional languages: emulators for embedded real-time protocols. As a case-study, we implement a simple emulator for the Biphase Mark Protocol, a physical-layer network protocol in Haskell. The surprising result is that a pure functional language with no built-in notion of time is extremely well-suited for constructing such emulators. Furthermore, we use Haskell’s property-checker QuickCheck to automatically generate real-time parameters for simulation. We also describe a novel use of QuickCheck as a probability calculator for reliability analysis. Bio: Lee Pike is a member of the technical staff at Galois. Previously, he was a research scientist with the NASA Langley Formal Methods Group, primarily involved in the SPIDER project. His research interests include applying formal methods to safety-critical and security-critical applications, with a focus on industrial-scale endeavors. An RSVP is not required; but feel free to drop a line to [email protected] if you've any questions or comments. Levent Erkok |
