COPIOUSLabs TechTalk: Developing a programming language with Rubinius – COPIOUS COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks. About TechTalks: COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. About this talk: Speaker: Brian Shirai Writing your own programming language can be very different from writing a program in an existing language. However, it is less intimidating than many people assume. This Friday, Brian Shirai from Engine Yard will present a talk about features of the Rubinius dynamic language platform that make writing your own programming language simple and fun. All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover. |

Google Development Group (GDG) PDX Meetup - All About Kotlin – eBay Community Lounge This month we're going to discuss Kotlin! If you haven't heard of Kotlin, it's a new language created by JetBrains (the people behind the people behind Android Studio). Kotlin is 100% compatible with java and android, and can be used in existing android projects mixed with java classes. There is incredible IDE support and the language itself is very modern, borrowing many concepts from functional languages such as Scala, but being much more accessible to java developers. We will have a presentation about Kotlin basics and I encourage you to bring laptops to play with it as we will reserve some time for group work where we all play with the language together. If you want to participate in that portion of the meetup, please have Android Studio installed along with the Kotlin plugin. Details of Kotlin can be found at: As always, excellent food and drink will be provided by our generous sponsor, eBay |

How to Speak Every Language: A Tour of the International Phonetic Alphabet – Zoom Join us for an interactive tour of IPA and you'll be more confident the next time you open your mouth to speak a new language. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is how linguists classify and organize all the sounds of the world's languages. It has all the consonants, vowels, clicks, and everything in-between that we need to speak, like a periodic table of talking. For language learners, familiarity with IPA is a powerful tool to understand how to make new sounds in their target language. |

Meet+Hack with the creator of the Wake Programming Language – Ava's Roasteria Come and bring your laptop, grab coffee, and meet Mike Fairhurst, creator of the Wake programming language. Learn about, write in, or guide the design of the Wake programming language at an informal hack night. While hanging out, we'll go over - features we want to add to the language - problems we're trying to solve - prioritizing next steps to code up - talk about what we want from a standard library Brave coders can spend some time working on the compiler (written in C++), while eager ones can try writing things in Wake to provide valuable feedback. Either way, work directly with Mike as questions come up to ensure its smooth sailing! |
