create Calagator::Event 1250459190 TechAmerica Talent Management Workshop: Tools for the Twenty First Century Workforce Roll back

description nil About the Workshop: The twenty first century is a knowledge worker driven era. New methods of managing acquiring, nurturing and retaining talent will be essential for a competitive organization. In this half-day workshop, a series of presenters will bring tools every HR leader should have in their toolkit and executive should hear. Session 1 (8:00 – 9:00 a.m.): From Start-Up to High-Growth: Shaping a Culture for Success The shift from a start-up culture has caused many promising companies to stumble. EthicsPoint president and CEO David Childers will present the step-by-step process his company took to consciously reconstruct its corporate culture. This two-year-long project has helped EthicsPoint exceed growth and revenue expectations and position itself for international expansion. Session 2 (9:00 – 10:00 a.m.) Turning the Job They Have Into the Job They Want For many companies the downturn has stalled growth, which in turn has left employees feeling “stuck” in their jobs. This dissatisfaction can be especially difficult in technology companies where employees are attracted to working fast paced growth and changing environments. Via Skype, Dr. Jane Dutton from University of Michigan will share the Job Crafting Exercise, a low cost, powerful tool that the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship has developed. Session 3 (10:15 – 11:15 a.m.) Performance Appraisals – The Next Act Few issues in management stir up more controversy than performance appraisal. There are many reputable sources - researchers, management commentators, psychometricians - who have expressed doubts about the validity and reliability of the performance appraisal process. Some have even suggested that the process is so inherently flawed that it may be impossible to perfect it. At the other extreme, there are many strong advocates of performance appraisal. Some view it as potentially the most crucial aspect of organizational life (Lawrie, 1990). Dr. Steve Hunt will talk about how the performance management process is shifting from an administrative process used to justify pay decisions to a forward focused tool for enabling business execution. Complete workshop information can be found here: http://www.techamerica.org/talentmanagementworkshop Details: When: Thursday, September 30, 2010 Time: 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. Where: Multnomah Athletic Club, 1849 SW Salmon St., Portland, Ore. create Calagator::Event 1250459186 Portland Perl Mongers -- Modern Perl + Test::Builder 2 Roll back

description nil speakers: chromatic and Michael Schwern This meeting will be two shorter presentations back-to-back. The Modern Perl talk is broadly targetted at beginners and everyday general usage concepts while the Test::Builder 2 talk will delve much deeper into particular details of Perl's testing system. chromatic on Modern Perl Perl masters talk about strange subjects such as whipupitude, manipulexity, context, lexicals, and linguistic principles. It may seem that you must be a wizard to apply these notions to your code and dexterously wield Perl's essential strengths. In truth, these ideas and idioms are deceptively simple: you use them every day when you read or write plain English. Demystifying the linguistic concepts in Perl opens up the doors of Perl mastery. Come learn the philosophy behind Perl's design in order to understand Perl and how to use its unique isms to improve your code. Schwern on Test::Builder2 Test::Builder is what most Test modules are written with these days. It lets them quietly coordinate with each other and frees the authors from having to worry about the details. It was written in 2001 and in that decade there's been an explosion of testing modules. A decade later, Test::Builder is starting to show its age and limitations. Its assumptions and biases are restraining the Perl testing community. Perl has moved on, too. When Test::Builder was written, testing was still a "new" thing. Now it's a given. We have a real object system now and a sophisticated community to take advantage. Enter Test::Builder2. A total rewrite of Test::Builder to remove its biases and let test authors do whatever they can dream up while still being the solid iron core of Perl testing and remaining compatible with Test::Builder. It takes advantage of things like Mouse (that's a small Moose), method wrappers and roles. Counter-intuitively, it does less than Test::Builder does while providing more opportunities. Schwern has a grant for Test::Builder2 from the Perl Foundation and if he doesn't release something by October they'll break his legs. So he's hoping to generate some contributors by showing off the design and code! As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

create Calagator::Event 1250459179 Portland Linux/Unix Group: Berkley DB Roll back

description nil PRESENTATION An Overview of Berkley DB by David Segleau Director Product Management - Berkeley DB Berkeley DB originated at the University of California, Berkeley as part of the transition (1986 to 1994) from 4.3BSD to 4.4BSD and of the effort to remove AT&T-encumbered code. It has evolved a great deal since then and is now part of Oracle where it is distributed with source code under a dual use license. Berkeley DB (BDB) is a computer software library that provides a high-performance embedded database, with bindings in C, C++, PHP, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, Tcl, Smalltalk, and other languages. BDB stores arbitrary key/data pairs as byte arrays, and supports multiple data items for a single key. BDB can support thousands of simultaneous threads of control or concurrent processes manipulating databases as large as 256 terabytes, on a wide variety of operating systems including most Unix-like and Windows systems, and real-time operating systems.

description nil The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is an annual exhibition of classic video games and systems in Portland, Oregon. We aim to recognize the history of video game systems and their authors, manufacturers and players. That said, the classic game collecting hobby is most closely associated with the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Nintendo NES and SNES systems, Sega Master System/Genesis, and other systems released in the 1980s and early 1990s. One can expect to see these systems as well as many lesser-known systems at the Retro Gaming Expo. In addition to home systems, we have had a larger showing of full-size arcade games to play.

Agenda 5:30pm Registration opens, networking 6:15pm Program begins (welcome) 6:20pm Keynote with Richard Boly 6:45pm Panel Q&A 7:30pm Program ends KEYNOTE: Embracing Social Media at the U.S. State Department: If the Oldest Federal Agency Can, Why Can’t You? The State Department is the oldest executive agency in the United States. Cold war secrecy created a need-to-know culture that impeded unofficial information sharing. State’s diplomatic corps is selected for risk aversion and trained to obtain many clearances and authorizations before officially transmitting information internally. Then the end of the Cold War was followed by the East Africa embassy bombings and 9/11. The paradigm shifted. The lack of information sharing and collaboration meant that puzzle pieces remain scattered and threats were unidentified. In this shift, the State Department’s office of eDiplomacy was born. Come find out how State Department has embraced lightweight social media tools behind the firewall to move from a need-to-know culture to need-to-share one. Meet Richard Boly, Director of eDiplomacy, US Department of State Richard Boly is a career U.S. diplomat and currently the Director of the Office of eDiplomacy, an applied technology think tank for the United States Department of State. description There’s a message from your future and it’s telling you to remember to pick up milk. Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of GeoLoqi. GeoLoqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends. Geoloqi has been covered in the Willamette Week and Oregon Business. It has been presented at eComm, Open Source Bridge, Show and Tell PDX and Research Club under the alias Non-Visual Augmented Reality with SMS and GPS. Read CNN's article on GeoLogi, "What's Next for 'Check-in' Apps". What will you learn: 1. Why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in their future. 2. Why social apps should try to mirror real–world relationships 3. Why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you want the information to be available. 4. Why developers should think about making apps "ambient” and require less user interaction. Meet the Geeks Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based PHP developer and GPS fanatic. create Calagator::Event 1250459168 PDX Cocoaheads Roll back

description nil The theme of the meeting is the new features of Xcode 4. Brandon, Rich and I will be dividing them up; if anyone else wants to join in, just let me know! Everyone needs to be under the Apple NDA; the easiest way to do that is to sign up for the Mac or iOS developer program (the free registration is fine). A general Q&A session will follow the presentations, and then we will adjourn for beer. (Note, the entrance to BrainSilo is in the back of the building!)
