create Calagator::Event 1250458436 Development of Social Capital: Successful Careers and Innovative Products Though Professional Activities Roll back

description nil Jim Isaak, IEEE Computer Society President, will share his experiences and research on the benefits of professional involvement outside of work. Professional activities outside of work provide opportunities and benefits for engineers and their employers that are not fully appreciated for their positive impact on careers and contribution to their employer. Involvement in professional activities allows individuals to develop skills and expertise that enables them to leverage their technical skills. Helping organize meetings, with program planning or peer review, chairing committees or being elected to the Board of Directors provides opportunities to learn and develop a robust professional network. Volunteering develops problem solving, team work and leadership skills at a minimal cost. Innovation is enhanced by exposure to new and complementary technologies and professional relationships that would not otherwise occur. “… the focus of value creation is effective participation in knowledge flows, which are constantly being renewed. “Finding ways to connect with people and institutions possessing new knowledge becomes increasingly important…” "… the more your company or country can connect with relevant and diverse sources to create new knowledge, the more it will thrive. And if you don’t, others will.” - John Hagel, business writer and management consultant Speaker: Jim Isaak is recently retired from Southern New Hampshire University. His research focused on how social capital is developed and influenced through interactions in professional activities, including professional societies, standards committees, and on-line communities. Jim is the 2010 IEEE Computer Society President. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Society for the Social Implications of Technology and has been a director of the IEEE. His industry experience includes Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Charles River Data Systems, Data General, Intel, Calma and IBM. He chaired the POSIX/UNIX standards committee for 15 years. He has a BS in Computer Studies and a MSEE in Computer Engineering from Stanford. Date/Time: Tuesday, March 16, 2010, Networking: 7:00 - 7:30; Presentation: 7:30 - 8:30 PM Location: Intel Jones Farm Conference Center auditorium (between JF3 and JF4) Directions: http://www.intel.com/community/tour/oregon/directions.htm/ Contact: John Prohodsky: jpro [[at]] dsl-only.net, (503) 510-2787

create Calagator::Event 1250458435 SW Washington PubTalk™ Roll back

description nil The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council (SWWDC) is partnering with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) to bring a vital connection with the world of entrepreneurship to Southwest WA. We are leveraging the network and expertise of OEN to support innovation and growth. OEN entrepreneurs tell good stories. They have to if they want their business to succeed. They also need access to information, contacts and capital. The OEN PubTalk™ is a great starting place for entrepreneurs to find just that. OEN's PubTalk™, held the second Wednesday of every month (except July and December), is a unique mix of educational panel discussions delivered by successful entrepreneurs, investors or business experts combined with opportunities for entrepreneurs to gain expertise in delivering investment pitches. Entrepreneurs can present as a featured company at a monthly PubTalk or they can compete in OEN's Seed Oregon PubTalk™ competition. During the monthly PubTalk's™, OEN selects two emerging entrepreneurs to present their five-minute pitch on who they are, and what they do in front of a live audience of experienced entrepreneurs. Presenting Northwest business entrepreneurs receive feedback on their products, services, business model, marketing strategy, or other integral component of their business. The objective is to leverage the strength and experience of the community, providing an invaluable learning opportunity for young entrepreneurs.

create Calagator::Event 1250458415 Galois Tech Talk: An Introduction to Communicating Haskell Processes Roll back

description nil Haskell is an excellent language for combining the power of functional programming with imperative constructs. This characteristic led to the development of the Communicating Haskell Processes (CHP) libraries, which support imperative synchronous message-passing in Haskell. The core 'chp' library provides basic message-passing, concurrency and choice, as well as integrated support for tracing. The 'chp-plus' library provides higher-level features such as process composition operators and behaviour combinators. This talk provides an introduction to the two libraries and the programming style they engender -- as well as a brief look at the formal semantics underlying the libraries.

Regular Portland Go club meetups are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays (see: OregonGo.org) but this is a chance for tech folks that are seasoned players or absolute beginners to get together and share a game. No experience is necessary to attend.

create Calagator::Event 1250458406 Advanced SQL Tuning Tips and Techniques with Dan Hotka, 15-16 March 2010 Roll back

description nil The course starts out with a complete overview of the Oracle architecture so students can get an understanding how their SQL and applications can take advantage of the computing environment. This seminar goes into detail on how Oracle arrives at an execution plan, the explain plan. Dan illustrates various coding techniques that insure the SQL runs at maximum performance in the current and future Oracle database environments. Indexes are closely examined as well. The internal structure is discussed as well as the decision process Oracle uses when selecting whether to use indexes or not. Dan will illustrate how to tell which indexes are being used. Dan illustrates various free tuning aids such as the Oracle Trace Facility, Stats Pack, and the newer Trace Analyzer. This seminar then uses this information in a discussion on finding the problem SQL using scripts and additional information in the V$ and X$ dictionary views. All scripts illustrated in this seminar will be made available to the attendees. The seminar concludes with a discussion on some Oracle10g new features that might be causing performance issues.
