description nil EPISODE #4! Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks! TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.

description nil Portland Attempts World Record to get Google’s attention. World’s longest “Telephone Game” needs only 700 people. A group of citizens are organizing the world’s longest “Telephone Game” as an attempt to get the attention of Google. The Technology giant has put out a Request For Information (RFI) to municipalities who may be interested in partnering with Google to install a 1 gigabyte fiber optic network that will serve 50,000 to 500,000 homes. The RFI has already caused quite a stir among cities large and small across America. In an attempt to gain the favor of the company, one city, Topeka, Kansas decided to change its name to Google for a day. The City of Portland is taking the proposal seriously and will be adopting a resolution Wednesday, March 17th to provide a proposal to the search engine colossus. The project would be a significant undertaking for Google. Estimates are that they would need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lay a fiber optic network in most cities, whereas in Portland, City efforts to facilitate it have already tilled the fields for high-speed broadband. The significance of the project is that it would provide speeds of one hundred times greater than is available today in the United States, potentially spurring innovative, revenue generating businesses and jobs in the city that is awarded the prize. A group of citizens in the technology and creative industries clusters have joined in the effort to “Woo the Goog”, since the RFI states that citizen involvement will be a deciding factor in awarding the fiber network. The Game will stretch from Pioneer Courthouse Square, and attempt to cross the Steel Bridge to the steps of the Rose Garden arena. The event will begin at 9am Saturday March 20th, and the record-breaking Telephone game attempt will start at the east side of the Steel Bridge at 9:30, reaching Mayor Sam Adams in Pioneer Courthouse Square at approximately 10:30. All who are interested are encouraged to meet at the corner of NW Couch and Naito Parkway. World’s Longest Telephone Game Saturday, March 20th 2010 Rose Garden across the Steel Bridge Contact: Donna Hougland [email protected] 503-313-9152

We're going to just have a casual meeting this month, so we can hang out, talk about whatever project or bit of code has captured your attention of late, and drink beer. We'll be meeting concurrently with the fine folks at the PDX Weekly Hackathon, so there should be plenty of discussion of quite a varied nature. Feel free to come out and hack on things, of course!

The Free Agent Formula + IASECP’s Tools, Experience, Guidance = Triumph! “I was immediately impressed by the highly practical nature of the Free Agent Formula. The experience-based wisdom, clear case studies and step-by-step advice demonstrate what works, but perhaps more important, what doesn’t.” Todd Henry Founder and President The Accidental Creative Company Learn the smart way to build a solo-based business. We’ve got the blueprint to turbo-charge your success – The Free Agent Formula. If you’re a consultant, designer, freelancer, copywriter, photographer, entrepreneur – here’s your personal road map to making more money, creating more opportunities and to finally finding the freedom you’re looking for. Small is the new big. Whether you’re still in the starting blocks or your existing business needs fine tuning, you’ll learn how to focus your time, energy, and money. Here’s a statistic: In 1980, 75% of the jobs in the communication and creative services industries were outsourced or “freelance”. By 2000, that number was 99%. That’s a big change. Nearly two decades ago, we saw change in the air. Many of us went through multiple layoffs and began “freelancing” to find stability and a measure of control. No longer was it enough to “get an education, earn your degree, and work hard”. We’re on a mission to help others in our industries struggling with this seismic shift in our economy. Over the past 12 years, we have been through the fire and have emerged as a strong and innovative community. I was thrilled to find the Free Agent Formula! It helps to boil down so many lessons learned. When combined with the experience and mentorship available only through IASECP’s Self-Employed Academy, you’ll find a dynamic package to get your solo-based business ready to not only earn income quickly – but you’ll get on the road to building your own empire! We’ve added our experience, real-live examples and tons of tools and tips, and more. Plus bonuses and extras that you won’t find anywhere else. The Secret to Freelance Business Success | Build Your Own Empire We start with the 6-step formula to create your customized business foundation plus you design the action steps to get you on the road – and then we walk with you down that road. We’ve been down it before. This program is not about the old-style management-heavy business model of the past. It’s about creating the lifestyle that only today’s technology-based solopreneur can develop. We focus on keeping your overhead low so your income can be high. Interested? Join us for an hour webinar on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 2:00 PM (Pacific time) and we'll share the beans. Can't make it at that time, that's OK. This event will be recorded so you can listen whenever it works for you. Not only is the event free, but we'd like to offer you a free PowerPoint presentation called Consulting in the New Economy just for joining us. Don't be shy! Bring a friend...No driving involved. We'll show you that not only is this the best time to work for yourself - but you don't have to do it alone!

update Calagator::Event 1250458183 Portland Java User Group: Teaching Girls and Boys to Program Computers Roll back

description This month's topic: Teaching Girls and Boys to Program Computers Why is it that the percentage of women graduating with computer science degrees around 50% in countries like Sweden, China and India, but less than 20% in America? As a "Geekdad" with a daughter, I found this unacceptable, and decided to do something about it... I went back to school... elementary school that is, to teach programming to the kids. My goal was to find an environment and a style that would encourage girls with curiosity to enjoy being controlling computers in creative ways, and in the process, encourage and involve every kid. My talk discusses the journey of coming up with a girl-friendly curriculum for teaching programming that boys wouldn't notice anything different. I then show off some of the new crop of "Integrated Learning Environments", i.e. Alice, E-Toys and Scratch. I finally give an overview of my "Computer Club" and how others can use what I've done to teach others. ---------- Speaker: Howard Abrams My first job in high school was teaching Basic and Logo programming to 8 year old kids; however, I haven't taught since graduating from college. After programming for 25 years (and Java for 12), I'm now intrigue about returning to my roots and working with the next generation. ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, usually at McMenamin's Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://www.mcmenamins.com/328 (but sometimes this changes). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!) As a "Geekdad" with a daughter, I found this unacceptable, and decided to do something about it... ---------- Speaker: Howard Abrams My first job in high school was teaching Basic and Logo programming to 8 year old kids; however, I haven't taught since graduating from college. update Calagator::Event 1250458366 Jon Bach talks about exploratory testing Roll back

description Jon Bach is coming to our local agile users group to tell us about his specialty, exploratory testing. Pizza at 6:30, meeting at 7. Talk: "Exploratory Testing: Now In Session" The agile nature of exploration and the ability of testers to rapidly apply their skills and experience make exploratory testing a widely used test approach—especially when time is short. But exploratory testing is often dismissed by project managers who assume that it is not reproducible, measurable, or accountable. If you share these concerns, a solution may lie in a technique called Session-Based Test Management (SBTM), developed by Jon and his brother James specifically to address these problems. In SBTM, testers are assigned areas of a product to explore, and testing is time boxed in "sessions" which have mission statements called “charters” to create a meaningful and countable unit of work. Jon discusses—and you can practice—the skills of exploration and demonstrates a freely available, open source tool to help manage your exploratoration. Speaker Bio: Jon Bach has been in testing for 14 years, 12 of which has been as a manager. His experience includes managing teams at Microsoft, HP and LexisNexis, and is currently a managing consultant for Quardev, Inc. -- a Seattle test lab. He speaks frequently about test management and exploratory testing, and is the co-inventor (with his brother James) of Session-Based Test Management. He’s also written a few articles for testing magazines as well as a listed co-author of a Microsoft Patterns and Practices book on acceptance testing (available for free online). Find him on Facebook, Twitter, or his presentations and articles on http://www.quardev.com, where he also has a blog. create Calagator::Event 1250458446 PLUG Advanced Topics: What Went Wrong with My Disaster Recovery Plan Roll back

description nil Brian Martin will be test-driving his IEEE presentation on his experiences in a true, "abandon the building" disaster recovery effort. He'll place particular emphasis on where technically sound, well-tested disaster plans often fail in a real disaster, and how these problems can be overcome. The best data center disaster recovery plans are developed carefully and tested regularly. If you're at that stage, you may think you are well prepared. In this entertaining presentation, Brian Martin describes the unexpected problems that arose when a well thought out and tested plan met a real disaster, and draws lessons that are applicable to any disaster recovery situation. Brian Martin has spent 30 years in the IT field, fairly evenly divided between being a mainframe system programmer and a server system administrator. He has operated Martin Consulting Services in the Portland Oregon area since moving to Portland from the San Francisco Bay Area in 1996. He has a wife, two cats, a dog, and nine in-service computers at home.

description nil J-P thinks spring break in a warm location with Big and Little C trumps PDXBreakfast. We know otherwise. We will be eating tasty breakfast reminiscent of my youth in NY, while J-P's clan eats fresh topical fruit. I mean, which would you choose? But wait, there's more. As a bialy expert (I grew up eating them from THE bialy source in NY and read Mimi Sheraton's "The Bialy Eaters"), I will be critiquing Kenny & Zuke's bialys for your entertainment. If that isn't enough of an incentive, then you clearly just have no idea what you are missing.

update Calagator::Event 1250458436 Development of Social Capital: Successful Careers and Innovative Products Though Professional Activities Roll back

description Jim Isaak, IEEE Computer Society President, will share his experiences and research on the benefits of professional involvement outside of work. Professional activities outside of work provide opportunities and benefits for engineers and their employers that are not fully appreciated for their positive impact on careers and contribution to their employer. Involvement in professional activities allows individuals to develop skills and expertise that enables them to leverage their technical skills. Helping organize meetings, with program planning or peer review, chairing committees or being elected to the Board of Directors provides opportunities to learn and develop a robust professional network. Volunteering develops problem solving, team work and leadership skills at a minimal cost. Innovation is enhanced by exposure to new and complementary technologies and professional relationships that would not otherwise occur. John Hagel, noted business writer and management consultant, summarizes the benefits of social capital and social networks: “… the focus of value creation is effective participation in knowledge flows, which are constantly being renewed. Finding ways to connect with people and institutions possessing new knowledge becomes increasingly important… The more your company or country can connect with relevant and diverse sources to create new knowledge, the more it will thrive. And if you don’t, others will.” After the presentation join us for a beer. Speaker: Jim Isaak is recently retired from Southern New Hampshire University. His research focused on how social capital is developed and influenced through interactions in professional activities, including professional societies, standards committees, and on-line communities. Jim is the 2010 IEEE Computer Society President. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Society for the Social Implications of Technology and has been a director of the IEEE. His industry experience includes Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Charles River Data Systems, Data General, Intel, Calma and IBM. He chaired the POSIX/UNIX standards committee for 15 years. He has a BS in Computer Studies and a MSEE in Computer Engineering from Stanford. description nil The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council (SWWDC) is partnering with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) to bring a vital connection with the world of entrepreneurship to Southwest WA. We are leveraging the network and expertise of OEN to support innovation and growth. OEN entrepreneurs tell good stories. They have to if they want their business to succeed. They also need access to information, contacts and capital. The OEN PubTalk™ is a great starting place for entrepreneurs to find just that. OEN's PubTalk™, held the second Wednesday of every month (except July and December), is a unique mix of educational panel discussions delivered by successful entrepreneurs, investors or business experts combined with opportunities for entrepreneurs to gain expertise in delivering investment pitches. Entrepreneurs can present as a featured company at a monthly PubTalk or they can compete in OEN's Seed Oregon PubTalk™ competition. During the monthly PubTalk's™, OEN selects two emerging entrepreneurs to present their five-minute pitch on who they are, and what they do in front of a live audience of experienced entrepreneurs. Presenting Northwest business entrepreneurs receive feedback on their products, services, business model, marketing strategy, or other integral component of their business. The objective is to leverage the strength and experience of the community, providing an invaluable learning opportunity for young entrepreneurs.
