create Calagator::Event 1250468035 Cascadia Cypherpunk Convergence Roll back

description nil A cypherpunk is someone who uses cryptography and similar methods to achieve societal and political change. ------------------- Over the last two decades we have seen the Internet transformed from a tool of emancipation to the most insidious threat to human liberty the world has ever seen. But amidst the seemingly intractable rise of a transnational surveillance society, there is a small spark of hope endowed on us through the power of mathematics. It is possible to formulate a math problem (an algorithm) so difficult that even the mightiest superpower cannot decipher it. It is this fundamental property of our physical universe that provides some measure of hope in what otherwise seems to be very dark times. Through this conference we hope to increase how networked our movement is and raise public awareness about issues of privacy, technology and social change in the digital age.

It is committed to offering educational opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $10 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can.

update Calagator::Event 1250468031 Portland Design Research Group Roll back

description Rob Wilcox, Emerging Technology Design & Product Consultant, will give a talk entitled "Journey to the Heart of the Grid: User Experience Research on Wind and Solar Integration into the Electric Power System." The North American electric grid is one of the most complex systems that has ever been designed. It is highly reliable, but it takes about the same time for a section of the grid to crash as does an airplane. The cause is almost always the same - human error and deficient situational awareness. Rob and his team had the opportunity to engage in user experience research for a new grid system for a wholesale utility company in the U.S. The areas we identified for critical focus were the customer experience and the user experience of the grid control staff who would use the system. Contextual inquiry uncovered some long- and immediate-term concerns, some of which they were able to address from a design standpoint, and others that will require significant future work for the electric utility sector to solve. Rob will give a brief introduction to the problem space and research findings. He will also discuss research personas, mental models, and learnings from the research process including organizational culture and barriers, regulatory and technical challenges, and working with stakeholders. About Portland Design Research Group The Portland Design Research Group is a multidisciplinary networking group focused on the role of research in the design of products, services and systems in business, government and non-profits. We welcome perspectives from all disciplines, including human-computer interaction, design, market research, the social sciences, and others. Meetings will be held every other month at The Art Institute of Portland, and will include speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and other events, with opportunities to network and discuss relevant topics with fellow research professionals. create Calagator::Event 1250468030 eBay Tech Tuesday: "Considering the Human Factor" Roll back

description nil If you build it, they will come. Maybe. How many times have you seen a product or app and thought to yourself, “Who would ever use that,” or dealt with the frustration of trying to operate something that feels like you need a degree in rocket science to figure out. Or maybe you don’t interact with the product much, but the noise it emits, or vibrations its function causes, drives you batty. Now, imagine that your company designed that product, built that website, deployed that app… and countless users are muttering your name under their breath. Hundreds and thousands of hours and dollars have been wasted and you have to go back to the drawing board. Did you do the research to ensure your product or technology would appeal to human wants, needs and desires? Factoring in the human element seems like common sense, but that piece of the equation is often left out. If you’re involved in building a product or developing a technology that is or will be used by humans, you’ll want to join us for the March 31st Tech Tuesday. We’ll have Marcelino Alvarez, CEO of Uncorked Studios, a local product design agency doing awesome things, talking with us about the importance of incorporating human factors and intuitive use into the design of products and digital environments. We’ll also have some folks from Wieden+Kennedy sharing their insights on the value of incorporating the human element into your marketing and advertising efforts. The evening's discussions should provide some interesting and engaging conversation. We look forward to seeing you there! * Doors open at 5:45pm, Speakers start promptly at 6:30pm * The main lobby doors lock at 7pm. Someone will be available to let you in, but please plan accordingly. * Pizza and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

create Calagator::Event 1250468028 Portland Perl Mongers - Perl in the OpenBSD base system Roll back

description nil Join us back at Freegeek this month for a talk by Andrew on Perl in OpenBSD. Andrew Fresh will be previewing his hopeful YAPC::NA talk on Perl in the OpenBSD base system. Perl 5.003 was imported as part of the OpenBSD base system in 1996 by Jason Downs (downsj@) and has been used heavily ever since. Quite a few system utilites are written in perl, one of the largest being Marc Espie's (espie@) rewrite of the package management tools and his amazing dpb (distributed package build) tool. Andrew is the current maintainer for perl in OpenBSD and wants to share what's going on. [Full synopsis][synopsis] [synopsis]: http://pdx.pm.org/meetings/2015/03/12/perl-in-openbsd.html Join us afterwards at the SE Lucky Lab for drinks and more conversation.

update Calagator::Event 1250468027 Lean Coffee Beaverton Roll back

description Rise and shine! It's a Lean Coffee on the West side, for early birds. Like lean coffee but evenings are impractical? Do you like coffee in the morning rather than (or in addition to) the evening? Join us for our next lean coffee in Beaverton this week. New to lean coffee? It's a great way to have real dialogue on topics, and we generally are discussing lean and agile. As far as the mechanics, here are the basics: Step 1: Everybody writes down topics they'd like to discuss on stickies placing them in a column in the center of the table. This typically takes about 3-5 minutes. Step 2: Each topic is briefly described by its writer (15-30 seconds typically per stickie). Step 3: Each person gets three votes which they indicate by marking the voted for stickie with their sharpie (they can put as many votes as they like on one stickie). Step 4: The top three stickies are placed in a new column, ordered by the stickies with the most votes at the top. Step 5: Each of these stickies are discussed for 5-15 minutes. When the facilitator thinks the discussion has reached a good end-point she asks if everyone is complete. When complete move the stickie over into a new column that represents 'done'. Repeat step until all done. Step 6: If enough time is left over, do another stickie or two.

create Calagator::Event 1250468023 Implementing a Data-Centric Strategy & Roadmap - Focus on What Really Matters Roll back

description nil The Portland Data Management user group (DAMA) is committed to thought-provoking presentations that you can apply to your work. Data is the lifeblood of just about every organization and functional area today. As businesses struggle to come to grips with the data tsunami, it is even more critical to focus on data as an asset that directly supports business imperatives as other organizational assets do. Organizations across most industries attempt to address data opportunities (e.g. Big Data) and data challenges (e.g. data quality) to enhance business unit performance. Unfortunately however, the results of these efforts frequently fall far below expectations due to haphazard approaches. Overall, poor organizational data management (OM) capabilities are the root cause of many of these failures. This workshop will cover three lessons as illustrated in examples, which will help you to establish realistic OM plans and expectations, and help demonstrate the value of such actions to both internal and external decision makers. Among others, you'll walk away with three takeaways: <ul> <li> That organizational thinking must change: Value-added data management practices must be considered and included as a vital part of your business 's strategy. </li> <li> Walk before you run with data focused initiatives: Understand and implement necessary data management prerequisites as a foundation, then build upon that foundation. </li> <li> That there are no silver bullets: Tools alone are not the answer. Specifying business requirements, business practices and data governance are almost always more important. <p> <br><b> Speaker Bio: </b> Peter Aiken, Ph.D., is widely acclaimed as one of the top ten data management authorities worldwide. As a practicing data consultant, author and researcher, he has been actively performing in and studying data management for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, he has held leadership positions and consulted with more than 50 organizations in 20 countries across numerous industries, including defense, banking, healthcare, telecommunications and manufacturing. He is a highly sought-after keynote speaker and author of multiple publications, including his latest book “Monetizing Data Management”. Peter is the Founding Director of Data Blueprint, a data management consulting firm that puts organizations on the right path to leverage data for competitive advantage and operational efficiency. He is also past President of the International Data Management Association (DAMA-I). </p> <p> <b> Schedule <br> 8:00 - 8:30 am - Sign In <br> 8:30 - 9:45 am - Presentation <br> 9:45 - 10:00 am - Break, Chapter Announcements <br> 10:00 - 11:00 am - Presentation continued </b></p> <p> <b> Cost and Registration <br> Free for DAMA Portland members! <br> $15 for guests <br> See the damapdx.org website for a list of corporate members </b></p> </li> </ul>
