create Calagator::Event 1250468692 PDX Big Data Discussion Group Roll back

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Gaussian Process Latent Variable Models for Visualisation of High Dimensional Data](http://papers.nips.cc/paper/2540-gaussian-process-latent-variable-models-for-visualisation-of-high-dimensional-data.pdf) by Lawrence. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions. There will be food.

create Calagator::Event 1250468690 Elixir Games PDX Roll back

description nil Last time we looked at Supervisor hierarchies, and unintentionally on my part almost everyone picked up the GenServer behavior as a component of their solution. Damnable misleading documentation! However that prompted a further conversation about GenServers and other components of OTP (the Open Telecom Platform). In the spirit of learning and disambiguating things we'll take a deeper look at some of these architectural patterns in Elixir and how they can help us better organize our projects and design better systems. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Special thanks to my friends Jeff Weiss and Puppet Labs, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us.

create Calagator::Event 1250468687 Galois tech talk: An Overview of Emerging Cybersecurity Policy and Law Roll back

description nil abstract: Why is cybersecurity such a hard problem? The US government, its citizens, and the organizations that write software are all on the same team, but in many cases, our interests are just not aligned. For instance, there have been endless political and social disagreements about the best way to share cyber threat intelligence without sacrificing consumer privacy. It’s these competing concerns that are the kink in our collective armor and that’s what our adversaries exploit, day-in and day-out. In this talk, Isaac will present the high-level strategic concerns and challenges in the cybersecurity industry, how those challenges interact with emerging policy and law, and how those policies will impact you. bio: Isaac is a security researcher at Galois where he has lead authentication and collaboration projects for the DoD and IC. Isaac earned his master’s degree in Cybersecurity from the University of Maryland, University College, and his B.S. in Computer Science from Ohio State University. In 2013, Isaac founded Tozny, a Galois spin-off company aimed at solving the password conundrum. Easier and more secure than passwords, Tozny replaces passwords with an easy-to-use cryptographic key on a user’s mobile phone.

create Calagator::Event 1250468686 TiE Speaker Series: Confessions of An Entrepreneur (and Investor) – Robin Jones Maloney Roll back

description nil TiE Members: FREE; Public: $25 Register at the link above! Join us for Confessions Of An Entrepreneur (and Investor) with TiE Charter Member and Board Member Robin Jones Maloney. In a past life, Robin was an investor. She has also been an entrepreneur and founder, startup advisor and mentor. Currently she is an executive with a company that went from startup (Geoloqi) to being acquired by ESRI. Along the way, she got a unique view on entrepreneurship from many different positions and vantage points. At our upcoming event, Robin will share some compelling confessions with us, such as: insights from her early career "on the inside" as a corporate venture capital manager, and some of the less-than-entrepreneur-friendly terminology she and her co-investors used; the elements of a pitch and business plan that she would pay closest attention to as an investor, and why; and her (torturous) experience raising funds for her first company, and the differences between the Silicon Valley and Oregon funding environment.

description nil Note: We'll give away one free 3-day pass to OSCON 2015, good July 22-24. Sign up when you arrive, and we'll raffle off the pass after the talk is complete! ******** If you attended the Write The Docs 2015 Conference, you know the importance of User Stories, and how they lead to more readable documentation. On July 14 (Bastille Day!), Amelia Abreu will give us her take on the User Story, when she talks about: * Better Stories, Better Technologies: ********* Technologies all have stories behind them, some we hear, some we don’t. From the genesis of a product idea, to the way that technologists characterize their work, to documentation, to startup origin stories. Development frameworks operationalize stories as a way to build features. Documentation tells a story, and speaks to certain stories about our users. How can documentarians think critically about the way that we tell stories? How do we confront times when some stories get told over others? How do we talk about our successes, and how do we not talk about our failures? Whose stories get heard: how do women, people of color, disabled people, and “non-technical” workers get left out of the stories we hear? In this talk, I’ll explore some of the ways that stories and storytelling are used in building technologies. I’ll share what I’ve found in looking at stories in technology, and propose some practical solutions for telling better stories and using them in building products.

create Calagator::Event 1250468684 AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: Making the Business and Technical Case for Pair Programming and TDD Roll back

description nil This June Cotten Blackwell's Agile team started a 3-month pilot adoption of pair programming and TDD – almost exactly as practiced during Coderetreats (http://coderetreat.org/facilitating/structure-of-a-coderetreat), which they used to kick off their pilot and can’t recommend strongly enough. So exactly how did they get management and team approval (and active support) for TDD/pair programming? Well, they are definitely blessed with Product Managers (and Directors) who are very big-picture, and highly open to persuasive business cases grounded in data and metrics. But, they think that *how* they made the business and technical case for pair programming and TDD is worth sharing – and that much of it might be highly applicable to *your* team. Bio: Cotten Blackwell is an engineering manager, Agile champion and Swift developer with over 15 years experience leading, coaching and mentoring software development teams. For the last four years he’s been doing that at Huron Consulting Group, where he’s known for his focus on improving team health and employee development and retention. Cotten has driven continuous improvements in Huron’s mastery of Agile and Lean Startup fundamentals, and has leveraged multiple software teams to more consistently, more deeply engage in risk identification, analysis and mitigation. RSVP's to [email protected] very welcome but not required.

update Calagator::Event 1250468639 eBay Tech Tuesdays: Accessibility Part 1: Creating an Inclusive Workplace Roll back

description This month's Tech Tuesday will be Part 1 of a two-part series on accessibility for people with disabilities. The focus of the evening will be on how employers and employees can work together to create an environment where every member of the team can thrive. Our speakers will be sharing their personal and professional insights on accessibility in the workplace. Please understand that this evening isn’t about policies and procedures, although chances are good you’ll learn something on that front. Instead, it's designed as an opportunity to have conversations about attitudes, perspectives, and stigmas about disabilities. Speakers: • Cory Klatnik, Data Center Social Media & Community Manager, Intel • Incight.org • TBA Part 2 will be happening Tuesday, August 25th. That Meetup will be focused on accessibility as it pertains to developing technologies, websites, apps, and more. Please save the date! Both evenings we will have an ASL interpreter during the presentations and Q&A. As usual, doors open at 5:45pm and we’ll have pizza & sodas for you. Presentation starts at 6:30pm. We look forward to seeing you! This month's Tech Tuesday will be Part 1 of a two-part series on accessibility for people with disabilities. He'll be speaking about his personal experiences in the workplace, as well as sharing his thoughts on what employers and co-workers can do to create a more inclusive workplace. • Incight.org Incight.org is a 501(c) 3 non-profit that supports and empowers key life aspects of education, employment, and independence for people with disabilities. A representative from the organization will be speaking on attitudes, perspectives, and stigmas, as they pertain to employees with disabilities. • Diana Laboy-Rush, Mobile App Developer, Aruba Networks Diana recently worked on a small team developing a product for people with significant hearing loss. Her team members included one person who was completely deaf. She will be talking about what she expected, what the reality was, what she learned about her own perceptions, and what she would recommend for others who find themselves in her place. As usual, I'm really excited about these speakers. I think the combination of experiences and perspectives and knowledge are going to lead to some really interesting and thoughtful conversations and questions. update Calagator::Event 1250468659 UserOnboard Ice Cream Party!! Roll back

description Hello friends! Let's celebrate the glorious Portland summertime together by eating ice cream in a park! I just reviewed Eventbrite's onboarding experience (http://www.useronboard.com/how-eventbrite-onboards-new-users/) and in order to do so, had to come up with an event to post. Ice cream and beer in Col. Summer's Park sounded like a great idea, and when the review was published, a lot of people actually RSVPed. So it's on! UserOnboard will provide the ice cream and probably some beer and we will all supply the good times with chill people. Hello friends! update Calagator::Event 1250468677 Wearable Electronics Kits Roll back

description What's better than buying wearables? Making your own! We'll look at a few wearable development kit options, many are so easy they don't require any specialized knowledge to make the next big thing! We have the pleasure of digging into the WearDuino development kit with its creator Mark Leavitt. WearDuino is a local creation by pdxwhl.org, and is an open platform for innovation in wearable health technology. WearDuino highlights: * Open hardware, firmware, software and physical design * Simple: coin-cell battery, Bluetooth low energy wireless * Modular: experiment freely with sensor innovations * Wearable in multiple body locations with different attachments * Smaller, lighter, thinner and 5x less expensive than Apple Watch We're also thrilled to host Camille Dodson who will show off LilyPad, another Arduino based development kit. It's not as focused on healthcare as WearDuino, but is a great way for Makers to easily get their feet wet building and sharing cool wearable projects. We'll look at other Wearable dev kits as well, and if you have any, feel free to bring them along! We love show and tell. What's better than buying wearables? Making your own!
