Use Brand Strategy to Get Noticed and Communicate Smarter
Roll back
| description |

Reservations: Free for members; $5 for nonmembers
At it's core, brand strategy is about understanding your audience's needs, identifying what you have to offer, and then communicating your message in a way that resonates with your audience. Brand strategy tactics can be put to work for your cause, business, or even for personal branding. Workshop attendees will learn brand strategy basics, and leave with an idea of how to put them to work to:
* Identify and connect with audiences
* Write titles, headlines, and descriptions that resonate with the audience
* Use social media to strengthen outreach
* Consistently communicate your brand across all touchpoints
* Handle partnerships, joint-branding and sub-brands DIY tools, expert tips and resources will also be shared throughout the presentation to empower attendees to implement what they've learned on their own.
Content will be geared towards City Club of Portland members, however concepts can be applied to other situations where brand strategy is needed.
Alicia Nagel Creative provides brand strategy and graphic design services to companies in Portland and along the West and East coasts. Alicia is able to provide a broad range of services to clients by acting as a strategic hub connected to a network of talented independent contractors and complementary service firms. This model allows flexibility in the range of services she can offer without the high overhead of a large agency. Prior to settling in Portland in 2008, Alicia spent several years in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston working as Designer and Brand Storyteller at advertising agencies, design firms and freelance. "Twelve years working in the industry has only grown my passion for what I do," says Alicia. "Branding and design represent a fascinating intersection of psychology, business strategy, visual problem-solving, iconography, and art." Clients include local brands such as City Club of Portland and Moonstruck Chocolate, tech and marketing firms such as Pixe lspoke and LanePR, and quirky start-ups such as Humani Pilates and PDX Empanadas foodcart. <p>If you'll recall, at the last S&T, we got to experience some OpenGL timelapse in large form, a couple of people showed off their amazing pieces that were in the uncontext. show at the Diode Gallery, and we saw the world premiere of plin.co, a modern version of Plinko.</p> <p><br>It's a new year, and we're going to get it started right.</p> <p>
<b>Chris Adams</b> is a software developer working in the political space at <a href="https://secure.actblue.com/">ActBlue</a>, an occasional software artist, and an obsessive book collector.</p> <p>His interests in digital art and book collecting periodically collide, grinding his brain to a halt. After years of working through this morass, he’s got thoughts enough to fill a talk & therapy session on the physical potentials of generative art. Let’s discuss!</p> <p>Generative Things: What happens when algorithms get physical?</p> <p>So you have a generative art project and you’ve chosen a single generated image for an art print. Now where is the essence of your project? What is the relationship of that print to your algorithm? Artists that work with generative processes have a problematic relationship with traditional means of production and distribution of art products. What solutions do we have, apart from bolting an iPad to the wall?</p> <p>His home on the web is at <a href="http://the55.net/">the55.net</a>. He and his girlfriend share the books they find at <a href="http://ruinsorbooks.com">Ruins or Books</a> (<a href="http://twitter.com/ruinsorbooks">@ruinsorbooks</a>).</p> <p><b><br></b></p> <p><b>Community Presentations</b></p> <p>As always, we're looking to you, the community and members of the group, to present a project or give a short talk.
If you have something to show and/or tell (and I know you do), please use <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15QZoKdAo873gQOPRjPZYRubpn6aOOz5p-7JpclW4XSI/viewform?usp=send_form">this sign-up form</a><a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/15QZoKdAo873gQOPRjPZYRubpn6aOOz5p-7JpclW4XSI/viewform?usp=send_form"></a>. We are hosting our third HackerLab event in Portland, OR! This is a four-hour, hands-on, strategically guided lab for developers that will cover how to build map apps with ArcGIS Online, APIs and Services, Open Source, and also with AppStudio for ArcGIS (for native apps).
The tutorials are led by Allan Laframboise, who is a really smart dude that tends to focus on JavaScript. He will give you time to play in between the tutorials. Snacks will be there for you to munch on.
This is a BYOM, BYOI, BYOA, and BYOD event: bring your own machine (seriously, we don't have any extras), ideas, apps and data. Yeah.
Oh and here is a list of the required materials:
1. Computer
2. GitHub account
3. Git installed and configured
4. Text editor
5. ArcGIS for Developers or ArcGIS Organization account
HackerLab Agenda:
12:30PM - 5:00PM - HackerLab (We get started promptly at 12:30!)
WE REPEAT: Bring your own machine! We will not have any extras for use. |

Free workshop: How to give great presentations (a Devsigner sneak-peek)
Roll back
| description |
<p>On Thursday evening, <a href="http://www.devsignercon.com/">Devsigner</a> presenter Kristen Gallagher will be giving a special workshop for fellow Devsigner presenters -- and it's open to the public.</p>
<p>The workshop is free.</p>
<p>If you're new to speaking -- or just want to brush up on your skills -- please join us!</p>
<hr>
<p>Talks aren't fun. Panels aren't fun. Conference talks usually suck for many reasons, but they mostly suck because no one is learning anything and everyone is just staring blankly at the talker. It doesn't have to be this way... it doesn't have to hurt. You’re about to give a talk - a talk that really should be awesome. Come hang out and get your hands dirty with making conference talks that are actually awesome. This talk won't hurt at all - all you have to do is teach, don't talk.</p>
<p><strong>In person:</strong> Thursday, June 18, 6:00 PM at Phase2, 514 NW 11th Avenue, Suite 203, Portland, OR</p>
<p><strong>Online:</strong> We'll be livestreaming the workshop as well. Check <a href="https://groups.drupal.org/node/471958">this event listing</a>, which will be updated with a link once we have it.</p>
<p><strong>Takeaways:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>get concrete tools to set up your presentations to be as awesome as possible</li>
<li>learn how to be yourself while talking</li>
<li>learn how to create talks that people remember</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Kristen Gallagher</strong> is the founder of <strong>Edify</strong>, a consultancy that designs and builds learning experiences that people actually learn from and like. She brings over eight years of instructional design, alternative learning environment experience, event management, business development, and nonprofit education experience to Edify. Recently, her focus has been on building educational experiences that empower people, especially young women and small business owners.</p>
<p>Gallagher’s substantial experience in museum educational programming, facilitation, volunteer management, community organizing, strategic planning, exhibition design and curatorial work, and program management informs her systems-thinking approach to business problem solving.</p>
<hr>
<p>You need not RSVP to attend.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.devsignercon.com/">Devsigner Conference</a> features sessions and workshops focusing on frontend web design and development techniques, tips and tools. We also aim to inspire our technically inclined creative community with amazing session topics that bridge the gap between art and code. Join us <strong>June 27-28th</strong> in <strong>Portland, Oregon</strong> for the second annual Devsigner!</p> |

Fun with Factual Failures

The first ever Curiosity Club off-site is coming! On June 22nd, 2015, we take over the Hollywood Theatre and try out an experimental new format. As our slogan goes, "We admit that it is impossible to know everything about anything and thus we remain perpetually curious and perpetually novice.” Part of good noviceship is asking questions, and we’re taking our questions to the stage!
Throughout life human beings are presented with de facto “truths” that are actually totally erroneous. These untrue “truths” may come from pervasive misunderstandings within culture, they may be handed down through institutional systems like education, government or religion, and sometime they come straight from a trusted authority figure like a parent. Big or small, they deserve to be questioned!
We've asked a power panel of Curiosity Club alumni to share some of the best and worst “facts" that they've ever come across. They will discuss the historical situations that led to these misconceptions, the proof that these “truths" are actually false, and their thoughts and feelings on living these lies.
See the panelist and more details at: http://www.handeyesupply.com/blogs/curiosityclub/30032705-curiosity-club-live-at-the-hollywood-theatre-06-22-15 |

We'll have two speakers. The first is Nathan Skalsky, who'll talk about his adventures with VERY large format 3D Printing. The second is R&D Plastics who'll talk about the plastic injection process and open a discussion for how it differs from 3D printing.
Still want more? We're going to try a couple new things this time.
New to 3D printing? We'll have a mini-workshop where you will learn how to 3D print your own name badge using TinkerCAD. Come at 6pm sharp! Bring a laptop and $5 to cover the cost of the print.
Iron PRINT - our design+print contest based on Iron Chef, (three master chefs battle it out by creating a full meal using a surprise ingredient). Here's how it'll go down.
1. We'll unveil a mystery theme before the Meetup.
2. Design something amazing using this theme. There are prizes for Best Print and Best Design. Need help with design? This is the time to ask! If you're going for Best Print, bring your printer, because you must print it _entirely_ onsite!
3. The crowd will vote for the Best Print and Best Design.
Please bring any laptops, software, 3D printers and filament. Participate by printing someone else's design! Are you up to the challenge?
When: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 6:00 PM
Where: eBay community Lounge
