"No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it."
We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately.
This month's paper is [Using Psycho-Acoustic Models and Self-Organizing Maps to Create a Hierarchical Structuring of Music by Musical Styles.](http://www.researchgate.net/publication/220722981_Using_Psycho-Acoustic_Models_and_Self-Organizing_Maps_to_Create_a_Hierarchical_Structuring_of_Music_by_Musical_Styles) by Rauber et al. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely.
Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.
There will be food. |

Refresh Portland - Benevolent Dictatorship as Creative Practice
Roll back
| description |

Creative leadership is about setting the stage for a team to produce the best work possible. It requires a deft balance between vision and empowerment, a strong strategic mooring with room for others to shine. A tall order, yet most people tasked with leading a team are figuring it out as they go.
Come hear tales from a self-taught benevolent dictator with over 15 years in the trenches producing passion projects and client work with teams of all sizes. There will be Hebrew. There will be Hip Hop. There will be hard won wisdom/stupidity.
Our speaker, Tsilli Pines
Tsilli Pines is the Director of Design Week Portland, the Host of CreativeMornings in Portland, and the Digital Creative Director at FINE. She’s been working as a designer for over 15 years and is passionate about the value of design and the power of creative discourse. |

Fellow coders, recruiters, business, and any supporters are welcome. Please RSVP (http://bit.ly/1SptSQq) for anyone you are bringing so we have an accurate count. Light appetizers to be provided.
When the Portland Code School unexpectedly shut its doors over the October 16th weekend, midway through the fall term, displaced students and former instructors came together to continue learning on their own, complete their final software projects and display the results of their dedication at their showcase event. When Portland’s tech community heard the news, they responded with an outpouring of support, offering everything from domain hosting and student scholarships to catering. Wirestorm, a globally distributed software development company, which has provided the students with mentors and study space, will host the showcase on Monday, November 16th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at their Portland office at Forge Co-working space on the top floor of Tiffany Center, at 1410 SW Morrison Street.
The event will showcase ten student teams who will unveil their final projects, which include innovative web applications and iOS-based mobile apps. The project teams have used a variety of technologies to show off the skills they’ve learned, including jQuery, JavaScript, Node.js, Backbone.js, Meteor.js, PostRegSQL, Orchestrate, various APIs, and much more.
Students, instructors, mentors, industry recruiters and tech companies are invited to attend the product showcase and honor the tenacity of the students whose mantra has been, “When the going gets tough, the tough get coding.”
A HUGE thanks to Wirestorm Portland for the venue sponsorship!!

The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214.
Bring your Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about.
If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux.
We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box.
There will also be coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't do computers on an empty tummy.

It's been a long while since we all gathered. To make the most of the time together, we're organizing a structured networking session. What is structured about it, you ask? Here's the quick summary:
We'll start with a quick meet and greet. You'll have a chance to meet nearly everyone one-on-one, briefly, before moving onto making another quick connection with another.
In the second half of the meetup, we'll then break up into smaller group chats based on shared interests and/or encourage folks to further their conversations with the folks they've found a shared interest in during the initial meet-greet".
Bring your business cards (or post-its and a pen) and be ready to meet and reacquaint yourself with peers working on education technology.
(RSVP on Meetup.com is optional) |

Real Time Operational Analytics at the Speed of Thought with Apache Spark
Jags Ramnarayan / Chief Product Visionary, SnappyData
Apache Spark has come a long way since it began as a faster batch oriented map-reduce solution for Hadoop. With support for streaming, machine learning, and most recently SQL, Spark aspires to become a player in the realm of real time analytics at scale. However, much of its underpinnings remain batch oriented and unsuited for highly concurrent OLAP workloads. In this talk, we will describe how we are innovating and renovating Spark's core underpinnings to make it suitable for real time operational analytics, helping create a unified platform that supports row and column data, high concurrency, and approximate query processing at scale.
Scala, OODA and Entropy: Thoughts on Continuous Learning
Adam Rosien / Engineer, Compellon / @arosien
In this talk, Adam will discuss Compellon's approach to so-called prescriptive analytics, which basically means "Ok, but what the *&^% should I do now!?". He'll talk about the barriers blocking domain experts from using analytic systems, how data scientists bias their models, and the evolution of Compellon's engine, written in Scala with Apache Spark.
Feel free to invite colleagues who would be interested in attending. |

Come share your ideas for kinds and formats for events, people you'd like to hear from, learning experiences you'd like to co-create, and stories you'd like us to bring with you. This evening will be an informal pizza and beer discussion facilitated by our organizing committee to learn from you and build connections among those who show up. NOTE THE NEW TIME!
We're gonna head back over to Coava this month on the SE side of town. We hope to see everyone there as we head into the holiday season.
The format is pretty laid back. Come by, grab a cup of coffee, and network with other business owners who are working on incredible projects. We can't wait to hear what you're working on!
About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: As a business owner you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. Coffee w/ Co-Founders is a way to network with other Entrepreneurs to allow free flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |

Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Clean Ruby](http://clean-ruby.com/) by Jim Gay. We will be discussing chapters ('Screenplay In Action' to 'East-oriented Code)
Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Pizza will be provided!
##Book Summary
* Learn to think about thinking. At the basis of every program lies a human being's mental model. Creating a program which accurately reflects a shared mental model is crucial to building habitable and maintainable systems.
* East-oriented code. Learn how to better understand encapsulation and create code which enforces that the right objects have the right responsibilities.
* Data, Context, and Interaction (DCI). Discover ways to flatten your object structure and create highly cohesive groups of objects that keep related things together, right where you need them.

Snowdrift.coop is a volunteer-built non-profit community project focused on a new sustainable matching system to coordinate the global community in better funding shareable freely-licensed works. The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. Other technologies and relevant work includes basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript and general design, organizing, and other non-technical tasks like co-op structure issues.
While the community includes people on many continents across the globe, we have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area.
At this meetup, we'll mix casual chat with focusing on some refactoring on the Haskell side and hacking on HTML/CSS stuff for the [new design](https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/blog/new-design-2). |

PDX Machine Learning
Roll back

A quick look at MXNet which is a deep learning framework developed for high performance training on single or multiple machines/GPUs. It has bindings for Julia, Python and R currently and has a GPU backend capability. (more info here: https://github.com/dmlc/mxnet)
If anyone wants to do a 5 to 10 minute presentation on a Machine Learning topic that would be great as well.

Also we should discuss the recent release of TensorFlow by Google.

Journeyman/Apprentice Round Table
Roll back

<p>Are you a beginner, just getting started in the land of iOS development, and have some questions you'd like to ask a group of more advanced developers?</p> <p>Are you an iOS developer that's been doing it a while and have lots of juicy knowledge to share with some beginners?</p> <p>Are you somewhere in between these two and just want to hear and contribute to a conversation that those two groups of people might spark?</p> <p>If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, that's what I'd like to do this month! This will be an extremely free-form meeting as we'll need to adapt to what you all bring to it. Have some code you'd like some help with? Bring it. Have some burning questions that have been hard to find just by Googling? Bring 'em! Have some really cool tips you think would help other developers, but you've never really found the right platform from which to share them? This is it! Bring 'em!</p> <p>
Show up at 6 for some pre-meeting chatting/networking. Meeting starts at 6:30. We usually wrap up around 8-8:30 and head to Bunk Bar for post-meeting beers.</p> <p>
See you there!</p> |
