update Calagator::Event 1250461927 AgilePDX sponsors: "The Mikado Method, or how to behead the legacy beast" workshop Roll back

description For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, it’s easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, use "The Mikado Method," a systematic approach to reclaim your code. The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track. http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/book/ For: Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping the delivery frequency and business value focus. Join Ola Ellnestam, founder of Agical.se and author of The Mikado Method, as he leads the group through exploring techniques for restructuring difficult-t0-work-with code. Ola likes to combine people, technology and business which is best done with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because that’s how new insights are created according to him. http://ellnestam.wordpress.com/ http://www.hanoulle.be/2012/02/who-is-ola-ellnestam/ http://www.agical.com/ Registration fee: $85 (the participation of our sponsors helps us to keep the fee as low as possible) For more information, or if you'd like to sponsor this event, contact dlarsen [at] futureworksconsulting [dot] com For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. create Calagator::Event 1250462093 PLUG Linux Clinic Roll back

description nil The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214. Bring you Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about. If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux. We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box. There is also coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't computer on an empty tummy.

create Calagator::Event 1250462088 New Tech Society - March Happy Hour Roll back

description nil The New Tech Society was founded to bring together a diverse group of individuals; technologists from a variety of disciplines and industries within the Portland community. We meet one night each month to make new connections, exchange ideas and enjoy each other's company. (RSVP here: http://linkd.in/xmZYA6) If you have a need--be it solving a technical problem, finding a new job, hiring a new employee, promoting a product, service or event, or just making new friends, please join us. This month, we will be compiling a "haves and wants" matrix, so we can help make meaningful introductions at our event. Feel free to email us about what you have to offer or need to find so we can add it to our list. We'll release it to the group before the happy hour. Please bring your friends. The vibe is low-key, casual and fun; be yourself. It is our tradition to offer a free drink to the first 10 people to arrive. RSVP: http://linkd.in/xmZYA6 See you there! -The NTS Crew

update Calagator::Event 1250462062 Product Management Challenges in the Transition to Agile Roll back

description ## March PDMA Learning and Networking Event If your development has started to embrace Agile methods, you’ll quickly notice the team is acting strangely. All of a sudden an MRD becomes a “backlog”, software releases become “sprints”, requirements become “user stories” and new languages such as “estimating poker” and “fist to five” start creeping into meetings. A successful transition also requires that Product Management behaves differently to leverage the benefits of Agile. During this transition, Product Management can either become the hero that helps Agile to shine as a serious business tool, or a villain that drives Agile deep into the dark corners of development. We’ll discuss some of the following specific challenges the Product Managers often experience in this transition among others: - Converting visions to backlogs - Driving and reporting roadmaps in Agile - Working with Product Owners… or being a Product Owner - PM’s role in iteration and release planning The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its March Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will share their experiences with transitions to Agile and offer specific tactics to make your transition successful. They will then lead a vigorous discussion based on Q&A from the audience. A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event. **Speakers** * **Dorian Simpson, Managing Partner, Planning Innovations** * **Miki Tokola, Managing Partner, Micom Consulting** **Date, Time, and Cost** * Thursday, March 15, 2012, 5:30-8:00 PM * $20 on-line registration prior to the event * $25 at the door * **To register for this event, click on the website above** * A discount is available for PDMA members ## March PDMA Learning and Networking Event If your development has started to embrace Agile methods, you’ll quickly notice the team is acting strangely. update Calagator::Event 1250461707 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description 10gen will be there with a presentation on MongoDB. <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland Oregon area. Join other developers for presentations and discussions about Ruby, libraries, tools and techniques. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday".</i> 10gen: Intro to MongoDB and Schema Design One of the challenges that comes with moving to MongoDB is figuring how to best model your data. While most developers have internalized the rules of thumb for designing schemas for RDBMSs, these rules don't always apply to MongoDB. The simple fact that documents can represent rich, schema-free data structures means that we have a lot of viable alternatives to the standard, normalized, relational model. Not only that, MongoDB has several unique features, such as atomic updates and indexed array keys, that greatly influence the kinds of schemas that make sense. Understandably, this begets good questions: * Are foreign keys permissible, or is it better to represent one-to- many relations withing a single document? * Are join tables necessary, or is there another technique for building out many-to-many relationships? * What level of denormalization is appropriate? * How do my data modeling decisions affect the efficiency of updates and queries? In this session, we'll answer these questions and more, provide a number of data modeling rules of thumb, and discuss the tradeoffs of various data modeling strategies. <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland Oregon area.
