BarCamp 6: Indie Video Game Showcase and Crowd Funding Jam
Roll back
| description |

Join us on March 30th to learn how to develop your own crowd funding project and explore the creativity of Portland's indie game developers.
In February, video game company Double Fine Adventure asked fans to support their new game by contributing $400,000. After only twelve hours, pledges exceeded $1 million. After less than 30 days, their game became the most funded project in Kickstarter history with over 87 thousand backers contributing more than $3.3 million. In total, they had reached 834% of their funding goal (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure).
Double Fine Adventure's success has generated massive excitement among indie developers & gamers everywhere. Instead of needing loans or credit, creators are finding new opportunities through our vibrant global community. At BarCamp Portland 6, we will showcase indie video games and explore crowd funding models. The goal of our event is to help local developers and entrepreneurs prototype their projects and discover best practices for crowd funding.
For more information on this session, visit our blog

The Power of NLP begins by changing your mental attitude to feel more positive and more assured about yourself.
The idea that more expensive gasoline is somehow better for cars is a myth. Some cars are made with high-performance engines that run best with premium gasoline. The majority, however, are not, and putting more expensive gas into their tanks isn't only a waste of money, it can actually prevent their engines from working as efficiently as they should. Cars are made to run with a certain type of gasoline. Changing their gas, even if that change seems to be for the better, is never helpful.

PORTLAND Wednesday 21 March, 7-10pm
The City of Roses has just under 600,000 inhabitants and a quite high concentration of coworking spaces compared to cities around the same size. Half of these spaces are networked coworking facilities, proving that the market is right and people are embracing the movement. Meet, share, and learn from the established spaces and other members of the coworking community when Joel Dullroy, co-founder of Deskmag & Deskwanted, brings the Coworking Space Ship to Portland.
Mini-Conference Program
7-8pm – Joel Dullroy, co-founder of Deskmag & Deskwanted, will present a detailed analysis of the 2nd Global Coworking Survey, 4 new trends seen in coworking worldwide, and a report from the Global Coworking Unconference GCUC in Austin (Anyone who was in Austin is welcome to add insight).
8-9pm – We invite everyone involved in the collaborative workspace movement in Portland to bring ideas to the table for this ‘Unconference’ style portion of the night. Building community, finding common goals and discovering how to share experience till be at the heart of this discussion
9-10pm – Mix, mingle, and have a drink on us. |

Speaker: Brian Mason Works for NetApp App Aware Group / APBU E-Series Storage

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc.

AgilePDX: Beaverton/Bangalore: A Tale of One Scrum Team
Roll back

Will we nil we, offshore development and distributed teams are here to stay (see CIO Journal 2/27/12 âOffshore Outsourcing Can Boost Agility).â Some people contend that it canât be done effectively. Come hear a case study of how one distributed Scrum team (Beaverton/Bangalore) learned to work together, rapidly improve velocity in a few sprints, and deliver the expected product on schedule. Jean Richardson and Rob Mills will discuss what it took to make it happen, the ups, the downs, and the lessons learned.
Robert Mills currently is the VP of IT at Rivermark Community Credit Union and was previously the Director of Engineering for CoreLogic, Consumer Services. Rob has led multiple organizations during their transition from waterfall or iterative processes to using Scrum. His organizations have been both global and local as well as both in Software Engineering and Information Technology.
Jean Richardson is experienced in Scrum and leadership coaching, adaptive and predictive project management, writing, training, public speaking, and requirements and business analysis. She has led, coached, and participated on both co-located and distributed teams, presented to IEEE IPCC on virtual teaming, and has been previously engaged to create an offshore development best practices white paper for a large local high-tech firm. Her client list includes a wide range of businesses including ADP, CoreLogic, Daimler/Chrysler, Action Without Borders/Idealist.org, Mentor Graphics, Portland General Electric, Oregon Health Authority, The Regence Group, and Tripwire.
This event is free and is at Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub. |

CHIFOO - Home Energy Monitoring and Management Systems (HEMS)
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Up to 57 million smart meters are expected to be deployed in the United States in the next two decades, which presents an unprecedented opportunity for greater visibility into home energy use. Smart meters themselves are not, however, customer-friendly portals, nor do they give utilities the option of communicating with their customers directly. This is where in-home displays (IHD), or the more comprehensive home energy monitoring and management systems (HEMS) come into play. Monitoring devices for the home, such as the Kill-a-Watt, have been around for more than a decade, but the first technologies on the market can be considered analog, at best. In the past several years, more mature HEMS have evolved which can give customers detailed information about every energy-using device in their home.
The most sophisticated HEMS, such as Tendril’s Connect platform, allow homeowners to control their lighting, appliances, and even electric vehicles remotely, truly transforming a home into a smart home. But, these systems are only just emerging on the market, and there is no road map for how utilities use them to communicate with customers. In this talk, Emily will discuss the evolution of these devices and what the latest technologies on the market are capable of, as well as how HEMS play a pivotal role in the evolution of the smart home.
About the Speaker
Emily Kemper is an Associate Member of the American Institute of Architects, and is the only public member of the Oregon Governor’s Board for Residential and Manufactured Structures. In her capacity at PECI, she is working to leverage emerging technology into existing and new residential energy efficiency program models, while advancing industry and public knowledge of energy efficiency in homes and buildings. Emily hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, and has a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a Master’s degree in Building Science. Her current research includes home energy monitoring systems, saving energy through behavior change, and smart homes. Her hobbies include photography, blogging, and following Nissan LEAFs around Portland on her bike.

The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214.
Bring you Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about.
If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux.
We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box.
There is also coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't computer on an empty tummy. |
