Come hang out, drink beer, and write code *every* Monday night.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops.

Inter-season edition.
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Mobile Portland: What's Going on in Wireless?
Roll back
| description |

We're all experts at using mobile devices. Many of us even know how to write software for them. But do you know what is going on "under the covers" in mobile phone technology, at carriers, and in the standards development world?
Why won't the iPad 3 work in Australia? Why is international roaming so difficult? What do developers need to know about future networks? What interesting technology is on the horizon that could contribute to new mobile experiences?
Rob Wilcox will give you a systems level view of wireless, competing wireless standards, and wireless futures, free of the marketing and jargon which can color the industry. He'll also propose some long term trends, both social and technical, your consideration in developing new use cases. |

Portland Perl Mongers – Modern Web Frameworks Panel
Roll back
| description |

This informal panel / round-table discussion will review and demonstrate what has changed over the last few years since Plack has become the leading deployment/glue technology for Perl web applications.
While Plack/PSGI is a vastly more flexible, maintainable, deployable, and scalable model than CGI, in many ways it is a back-to-basics simplification of the ways in which code and servers interact. It has also led to new web frameworks which allow you to forget about all of those fundamental details. We'll try to look at the overall picture, plus specific examples and discuss use cases and migration experiences.
Panel members:
* Ben: Dancer demo
* Joshua: a second person to answer Dancer questions
* Clay: CGI to Plack conversion
* Eric: server options for testing and deployment
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab. |

According to Business Incubation Works, "Business incubators reduce the risk of small business failures. Historically, NBIA* member incubators have reported that 87 percent of all firms that have graduated from their incubators are still in business." In this webinar series, OEN will explore the ups and downs of starting a company in an incubator.
What really happens within start up incubators? Do they help companies become successful or at least get over certain challenges? What type of companies and people find the incubator experience to be a positive? Are there downfalls to going through the experience? These are just a few of the questions you can ask Sheetal Dube who has started his successful company in an incubator.
Want to submit your questions ahead of time? Email them to Larry Williams at [email protected] for the next session.

Roll back
| description |

Many small (and even large) businesses struggle with structuring the compensation of key employees. This webinar will focus on the some of the common ways to compensate key employees and the tax and other legal issues that are often implicated by such arrangements. Topics will include equity and quasi-equity arrangements, deferred compensation and how to comply with or be exempt from the grasp of Internal Revenue Code Section 409A, and common missteps in structuring key employee compensation.
Speaker: Ryan Nisle
Ryan R. Nisle, a partner in the business department, joined Miller Nash in 2001. Ryan focuses his practice primarily on tax and business law, with an emphasis on partnership and corporate tax, state and local taxation, international taxation, executive compensation, and tax incentives related to energy and affordable housing. |

AgilePDX event: "The Mikado Method, or how to behead the legacy beast" workshop
Roll back
| description |
THANK YOU to our sponsors: ProKarma and Agile Open Northwest!!
For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, itâs easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, use "The Mikado Method," a systematic approach to reclaim your code. The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track.
http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/book/
For: Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping the delivery frequency and business value focus.
Join Ola Ellnestam, founder of Agical.se and author of The Mikado Method, as he leads the group through exploring techniques for restructuring difficult-t0-work-with code. Ola likes to combine people, technology and business which is best done with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because thatâs how new insights are created according to him. http://ellnestam.wordpress.com/

http://www.agical.com/
Registration fee: $85 - The participation of our sponsors, (including Agile Open Northwest, ProKarma, and...you?) helps us to keep the fee as low as possible.

Pdx Hadoop - Data Science Meeting

Presentation this month by Dave Revell from Urban Airship.
OVERVIEW
"The main topic will be how we use Hadoop and HBase at Urban Airship for collecting and analyzing data from mobile apps. Mobile app developers integrate our client library into their apps, which send analytic events to our backend. We'll talk about the problems involved in collecting and analyzing data at scale. We use HBase for storing raw events, for feeding the analysis processes, and serving the generated reports. We use Hadoop Mapreduce for ad-hoc analysis and moving large amounts of data; we'll talk about why it's unsuitable for the kind of near-real-time incremental analysis that we do.
For the data scientists, we'll talk about our data set and types of analyses we'd like to do. Our current reports are fairly basic, but we'd like to know what factors affect user engagement with mobile push notifications and whether we can make predictions about their effectiveness."
Questions and suggestions are definitely welcome. Post on Google Groups Page:
