update Calagator::Event 1250462356 Legal Basics for Emerging Startups Roll back

description For someone starting a business, addressing legal issues can be intimidating from both a cost and time perspective. Mapping a startup's initial legal needs can help create predictability around expenses, clarify questions of prioritization of expenses, and improve allocation of resources. Gina Atwood, a business attorney with the Immix Law Group, will outline the common legal needs of startups – corporate formation and governance, contracts, IP and Securities. The presentation will provide education on some of the core legal issues faced by startup, and offer suggestions for how to improve the predictability of legal expenses. It will be followed by an interactive session where interested attendees will brainstorm with Gina about their startup needs. This event is part of our ongoing Incubator series to provide information, guidance and networking to startups. The events will feature presentations by seasoned business leaders and leading firms including presentations by some of our Charter Members and sponsors. create Calagator::Event 1250462359 Galois Tech Talk: An Analysis of Analysis Roll back

description nil Presented by Charles Parker A basic problem in computer science is binary classification, in which an algorithm applies a binary label to data based on the presence or absence of some phenomenon. Problems of this type abound in areas as diverse as computational biology, multimedia indexing, and anomaly detection. Evaluating the performance of a binary labeling algorithm is itself a complex task, often based on a domain-dependent notion of the relative cost of "false positives" versus "false negatives". As these costs are often not available to researchers or engineers, a number of methods are used to provide a cost-independent analysis of performance. In this talk, I will examine a number of these methods both theoretically and experimentally. The presented results suggest a set of best practices for evaluating binary classification algorithms, while questioning whether a cost-independent analysis is even possible.

description nil An Introduction to Verilog Synthesis by Galen Seitz This talk will introduce you to the joys and pitfalls of programmable logic design using Verilog. The focus will be on small designs that could conceivably be undertaken by hobbyists. While we could easily spend weeks on the subject, we will try to cram the following into an hour and a half or so: * Overview of PALs, CPLDs, and FPGAs * Why use programmable logic * Verilog constructs for synthesis * Synthesis workflow * Simulation * Guidelines for synthesis * A demonstration If your digital logic skills are a bit rusty, you may want to brush up on your understanding of logic gates and D flip-flops ahead of time. There are *many* sources of info on the net. Here are couple that may be useful: http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~jdonalds/210/lecture08.html http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~jdonalds/210/lecture12.html Many will break for the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne afterwards.

create Calagator::Event 1250462355 PADNUG May Meeting Roll back

description nil Please join us Tuesday night for the PADNUG May meet-up! This month, Kathleen Dollard will be presenting on MVC extensibility with MEF. WHERE: Intel Hawthorne Farms 3 (HF3) 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy Hillsboro, OR 97124 Map: http://binged.it/IntelHF3Map WHEN: Tuesday 5/8/2012 6:00 p.m. Pizza 6:30 p.m. Presentation ~8:30 p.m. After Words at On the Border Mexican Grill WHO: Kathleen Dollard is Technical Evangelist for Digital Folio. She has been a Microsoft MVP since 1998 and has given hundreds of speeches around the world. She has worked extensively with compositional architectures in relation to specific development platforms. Her experience includes HTML5/Javascript, Silverlight, and WPF in both C# and Visual Basic. She’s interested in making core .NET technologies available to all coders to enable them to write better software faster. Her newest adventures include Windows Azure and SQL Azure. Kathleen is also a long-time advocate of generative techniques and is the author of Code Generation in Microsoft .NET (from Apress). She has published numerous articles on a range of .NET technologies. Kathleen is active in the Northern Colorado .NET SIG, the Denver Visual Studio User Group, and the Northern Colorado Architect's Group. Twitter: @kathleendollard | Website: http://msmvps.com/blogs/kathleen TOPIC: MEF offers a great tool for composition and MVC offers an extensibility model designed for composition. Combining these two demonstrates a great composition design with nearly unlimited flexibility conditionally exposed as you need more features within MVC. You’ll learn how to use dependency injection (DI) to componentize tasks following single responsibility principle for more robust and testable applications. You’ll see how MVC uses custom model binders, value providers, validators, and filters. You’ll see these techniques used to pull almost all code out of the website project, giving you full flexibility in how you organize your website’s code. You’ll also see generic base classes that allow extensive reuse of controller logic and reuse of page elements. This challenging talk offers something for everyone – deeper insight into composed systems using DI, details about MVC internals, and some serious MEF examples. update Calagator::Event 1250462282 CHIFOO presents Mobile as Analytics for Life Roll back

description Julie is on an early morning training run. She has done some running over the last year, but this will be her first marathon. She doesn’t have a training partner, but a voice in her ear expertly nudges her on, while her mobile device records her pace, her route, and saves it to a training log in the cloud. A friend comments later on Facebook about her commitment, noting that he has trouble running so early in the morning. Tryouts for the high school soccer team are in three months, but Steve is starting his training now. A device in the midsole of his shoe and in the soccer ball he uses measures direction and acceleration, and compares his data to his peers and to the pros. An app on his mobile device records his statistics, shows him where he is strong and where he is weak, and gives him a training program to elevate his game. Analytics, the marriage of computer science and statistics, allows us to derive meaning from large sets of data. Historically it has been the domain of business strategy and marketing, used to zero in on patterns which enable strategists to forecast future market behavior and improve outcomes. New mobile technology allows users to collect their own data, connects them to the best science, and does so in a way that is personal, social, and highly targeted. The Nike+ Sensor records running performance, the Adidas miCoach Speed Cell measures multi-directional motion for sports training, the Withings scale and blood pressure monitor helps people monitor their health, and UP by Jawbone measures activity level, sleep cycles, and eating patterns. How has user-centered design shaped the direction of these new technologies? In this presentation, Jeanne will explore the ways that people have integrated these devices into their lives and discuss whether the technology has followed through on the promise to improve health, performance, and lifestyle. About the Speaker Jeanne Turner is a passionate and versatile interaction designer who is dedicated to creating delightful experiences through greater understanding of user needs, goals, and motivations. After earning a BA in Computer Science with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction, she’s spent the past 7 years using her skills to build both mobile applications and web environments for clients including Ecotrust, Vanderbilt Owen School of Management, Tektronix, Harvard Business School, Starbucks, and Amazon. Jeanne is also an invaluable part of the Portland interaction design community, serving as the leader and co-leader of the local chapter of IxDA since May of 2008. We will be starting up at 7pm that Friday evening upon delivery of a game prompt, and our space will be available to us through the evening of Sunday the 27th. A majority of teams will be constructed beforehand, though jammers may participate individually, form a team the night of, or join an existing team. Some equipment will be provided, including computers w/Unity, UDK, Adobe Suite, Maya/Max, and Office Suite. Jammers will be responsible for providing their own bedding (should they choose to spend the entirety of the weekend in our workspace), food, and additional equipment. Bringing food in the spirit of a potluck is appreciated. To assist in creating Jam teams, RSVP via http://pigsquad.com/events/mayhem-pigjam with your preferred game development skillset if you plan on participating and do not already have a team formed. Please RSVP regardless; we have room for 50 jammers. Big thanks to Keld Bangsberg, John Wilkes, and the Art Institute of Portland for their efforts and sponsorship!
