The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214.
Bring you Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about.
If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux.
We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box.
There is also coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't computer on an empty tummy.

Portland Perl Mongers â Programming in the Future + Intro to Dist::Zilla
Roll back
| description |
speakers: Eric Wilhelm + Jonathan "Duke" Leto
(Rumored cameo / lightning talk by Florian "rafl" Ragwitz.)
Programming in the Future - a preview of the upcoming OSCON presentation covering the last and next 25 years of programming technology using Perl as our time machine. We'll look at the evolution of tools, syntax, modules, and standard practices, the gooey innards, and some "hot new things" which are still being discovered again.
Introduction to Dist::Zilla for Newbies - eliminates your excuses for not learning more about Dist::Zilla and using it on a regular basis. By the end of this talk, you will know how and why to use dzil as your favorite Perl package developer tool, and you might even need to publish more code on the CPAN just to have an excuse to use it more.
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub. |

ELC Technologies Internship Program Introduction
Roll back
| description |
ELC Technologies is starting up a new paid internship program. If you've dabbled with Rails but haven't quite made it to paid developer status yet this may be just the program for you. Come and talk to us, eat food, and find out why you want to apply for the program.
<b>The Program</b><br>
The internship will take 3 months and by the end we expect that you will be ready to start work as a junior programmer immediately. This internship is not a requirement for employment at ELC and is no guarantee of employment, but it is a great way to get the fundamentals while getting paid to do so.
<b>The Event</b><br>
The introduction event will allow you to connect with the instructors and the organizers behind the internship program while eating delicious pizza and consuming beverages. We will go over the format of the program, talk about the requirements needed to enter, and the application process. At the end we will have time for you to talk to coaches and ELC employees about what it's like to work for ELC and what sorts of projects we work on. |

MST3K-style movie mocking
Roll back
| description |

"A glorious pairing of movies and comedy"--Entertainment Weekly
"A truly awesome experience!"--Gawker
"Hilarious comedians in front of your eyes, riffing on the movie way better than you and your friends ever could hope to."--Seattlest
"The Twilight series is a particular specialty of Master Pancake Theater" -- Popwatch
"An essential Austin experience" -- Austin Monthly
Smart, fast, and bust-a-gut funny, Master Pancake Theater's comedy (think MST3K mixed with Beavis and Butthead) has lead to years of sold out shows at the legendary Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. The members of Master Pancake provide live comedy along with the movie, as well as hilarious skits and competitions. Now they're coming to Seattle's SIFF Cinema at the Uptown for a live skewering of the Pacific Northwest's greatest contribution to cinema, TWILIGHT!
This Lost Boys rehash about a teenager who moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest and falls in with the vampire crowd features Kristen Stewart as the new kid in town, and Robert Pattinson as the centuries-old kid in town. Kidding aside, the acting is surprisingly good: Stewart is masterful at her one facial expression, and Pattinson has perfected the pale dead-guy mystique that he honed as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter series. And if you thought you'd seen every vampires-playing-baseball cliché in the book, just wait 'til you see how director Catherine Hardwicke breathes new life into that tired set piece.
Come out to Cinema 21 and let the bloodletting begin as Master Pancake sucks the life out of this preposterously ghastly modern teen "classic"!

Henrik Joreteg â âAvoiding the Spaghettiâ
Clientside code doesn't have to be an ugly cluttered mess. Building clean, sane, maintainable client-side applications is indeed possible. We'll talk a bit about CommonJS on the client, properly abstracting a model layer, the DOM as a dumb view layer, sharing code between client/ server and other techniques for avoiding insanity like automated static code analysis.Â
Henrik is a partner and lead JS developer at &yet (http://andyet.net), a boutique web software company in Richland, WA. He's a member of a growing group of javascript developers who are blazing the trail of realtime and single-page web application development and server-side javascript. Letâs put it this way: the dude cannot shut up about node.js, backbone, and socket.io.Â
He is the primary developer for &bang (http://andbang.com) and has written a slew of single-page real-time web apps using a number of technologies. He recently spoke at NodeConf and KRTConf and was a technical reviewer for O'Reilly's JavaScript Web Applications. He is the author of the popular open source javascript templating solution, iCanHaz.js and as an early adopter of Backbone.js wrote several definitive blogposts on the subject.Â

Alternative to PDX Weekly Hackathon.
Come hang out and write code in a quieter, less crowded environment with your fellow nerds.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
The place is smaller, so finding the nerd herd shouldn't be too difficult. |

Imagine:
Every application, service, and device understands the world you're in, learns your intentions and goals, and has the ability to extend beyond their original program......help users achieve goals faster, more efficient.
Kimera Systems is the first company to bring a network-residing, context specific infrastructure to the market.
It’s available to any developer, today.
Since Google Now and Foursquare’s added context awareness, we decided to announce what we've been working on for the last few years.
It’s based on new, mobile artificial intelligence (AI) technology. We’ve created a service that can assist your device or application in any use case.
Providing an intelligent User eXperience
Context Aware: Constantly adapting to new situations
User priorities and intent drive services
Intelligent distribution to your end-users without using current "app store"-models
Join us Wednesday August 8, 2012 from 6pm to 8pm at ShopIgniter in the Pearl District (Portland) to learn how you can implement this technology in your PHP Web Apps today, to provide a superior user experience over native apps.
We provide the necessities: Pizza, Beer, & Soda!
Limited seating: RSVP today! |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: TBD
Roll back

Portland Linux/Unix Group Meeting
It's a little known secret that systemd is extremely capable of starting, controlling and regulating more than just system services, but can easily start an entire Desktop UI. Not many people have sat down and implemented and worked out the problems of starting an X service, a few UI components, the session bus and DBus services for normal users with the mechanisms that systemd provides.
The benefits are obvious: Systemd provides excellent service monitoring and restarting capabilities, provides socket and DBus activation for relevant services, and overall improves desktop startup by allowing user services to start well before core services like Xorg or wayland start. In effect, we're saying goodbye to XDG autostart entirely, and getting back reliability and scalability.
We converted several desktop environments including Tizen's Mobile UI, Xfce4, Enlightenment and more to systemd user sessions. We "pop the hood" and take a look at the implications for startup, what's possible to further improve on the session startup and where we can do better.
Auke Kok is a software engineer at Intel's Open Source Technology Center, and has been attempting to make Linux boot faster since 2007. In 2008, he co-presented the "5-second boot" with Arjan van de Ven at the first LPC. Since then, Auke has worked on further improving the Linux Core OS start sequence, first for Moblin and later with MeeGo, where we made the first switch to systemd. Auke now works on Tizen, which will heavily integrate systemd in the Core OS.
Agenda:
7:00 - 7:15 Announcements
7:15 - 8:30 Presentation and Questions
9:00 - ... Beer
The Lucky Lab Northwest Beer Hall
1945 NW Quimby
Portland, Oregon

Measuring and Improving Key SaaS Metrics
Roll back
| description |
Beer and SaaS metrics go together like peanut butter and fluff.Â
Join other like-minded SaaS and internet startup entrepreneurs from the PDX area July 12, 2012 (Thursday) in a casual roundtable to discuss what key metrics have worked for them and what has not. Hosted at Urban Airship's industrial digs with beer and snacks.
We'll kick off the evening with opening remarks by Totango Co-Founder, Omer Gotlieb, and go into stats and figures from our SaaS Metrics Survey and Customer Engagement benchmark report.
Bring your questions, thoughts and opinions at this informal meetup to discuss what metrics you want to improve for your business.
What to expect:
1) You're not alone, other SaaS companies want to learn best practices for measuring key metrics. This is your chance to spitball some ideas.
2) Network with other SaaS entrepreneurs!
3) Learn new strategies from others' successes (or what to avoid).
This is the perfect event for you to measure your success! We'll see you there!
