The two outside staircases at the Ecotrust building both go up to the terrace, they should both be unlocked. If they're not, call Tim at 971-227-2357 and we'll let you up. If it's just too hot up there in the evening sun we'll take over some tables down on the back patio by laughing planet. There's plenty of beer on tap in the building. |

ELC Technologies Internship Program Introduction
Roll back
| description |
ELC Technologies is starting up a new paid internship program. If you've dabbled with Rails but haven't quite made it to paid developer status yet this may be just the program for you. Come and talk to us, eat food, and find out why you want to apply for the program.
<b>The Program</b><br>
The internship will take 3 months and by the end we expect that you will be ready to start work as a junior programmer immediately. This internship is not a requirement for employment at ELC and is no guarantee of employment, but it is a great way to get the fundamentals while getting paid to do so.
<b>The Event</b><br>
The introduction event will allow you to connect with the instructors and the organizers behind the internship program while eating delicious pizza and consuming beverages. We will go over the format of the program, talk about the requirements needed to enter, and the application process. At the end we will have time for you to talk to coaches and ELC employees about what it's like to work for ELC and what sorts of projects we work on.
For more information please email: [email protected] |

We meet the 3rd Wednesday of every month at several locations usually in NW Portland (Old Town). No need to RSVP, all are welcome - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers. Beer at nearby pub to follow, probably Pints.
This month: <em>Geo-evening of beer and hacking on the terrace</em>
This month is casual fun in the sun and we'll see where it goes. OSCON attendees are welcome to join us and tell tales of mapping adventures. If it's too sunny up on the terrace we can grab tables down on the back patio.
Should be fun, see you tomorrow. |

Lean UX
Roll back
| description |
This month weâre discussing Lean UX, the latest technique to get UX teams and Agile teams working together effectively. Andrew will present a brief summary of the competing approaches to implementing Lean UX, and discuss Site9's experiences incorporating Lean UX into their Agile development environment. After the presentation, the rest of the session will be dedicated to a group discussion of issues raised by Lean UX, how to get Lean UX started in your work environments, and explore alternatives to or variations of Lean techniques.

Do you like drones (aka UAVs)? Do you fly, build, drive or program something that could be considered a drone? Then join this group of enthusiasts and let's get together and share experiences, success stories, crashes and hacking projects we're all working on!
We have a broad definition of a drone - its basically a device that is either remotely controlled or completely autonomous. It can fly, drive or swim. It can carry things or take pictures and videos. You can control it by line of site, via video link or by programming in its route ahead of time. |

JavaFX 2 is the future of RIA development
Roll back
| description |
This month's topic: JavaFX 2 is the future of RIA development
JavaFX 2 is the future of RIA development. It takes the power of a modern scene graph, adds rich animation and multimedia capabilities, and extends to the web and beyond with seamless portability. At the same time, it leverages the power and breadth of the Java language and platform, allowing full access to existing Java libraries and integration with Java client technologies like Swing.
This session will introduce you to the JavaFX 2 platform from the perspective of a seasoned Java developer. The breadth of JavaFX APIs will be explained through several examples that we will build out during the course of the session. In addition, we will showcase SceneBuilder, the new JavaFX-based GUI building tool for rapid application development. If you have heard about JavaFX before, but were not sure about taking the plunge, now is the time to see what you have been missing out on.
This talk will provide a theory of operations, systems description and possibly a demo of a live system. All code will be made available on Github.
----------
Speaker: Stephen Chin
Stephen Chin is a Java Evangelist at Oracle specializing in UI technology and co-author of the Pro JavaFX Platform 2 title, which is the leading technical reference for JavaFX. He has been featured at Java conferences around the world including Devoxx, Codemash, OSCON, J-Fall, GeeCON, Jazoon, and JavaOne, where he twice received a Rock Star Award. In his evenings and weekends, Stephen is an open-source hacker, working on projects including ScalaFX, a DSL for JavaFX in the Scala language, Visage, a UI oriented JVM language, JFXtras, a JavaFX component and extension library, and Apropos, an Agile Project Portfolio scheduling tool written in JavaFX. Stephen can be followed on twitter @steveonjava and reached via his blog: http://steveonjava.com/
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc.

Your Future in the Cloud - Come for the Predictions, Stay for the Drinks
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
It's no secret that the cloud is growing - and fast. But where is it going in such a hurry? What can we expect (and prepare ourselves for) in the years to come?Â
Â
Join us on Thursday evening (7/19) on the gorgeous Wieden + Kennedy rooftop for drinks, networking and a special discussion on the future of the cloud. The short discussion will be led by cloud evangelists Ben Kepes (@benkepes) and Krishnan Subramanian (@Krishnan), and moderated by TechCrunch's enterprise reporter, Alex Williams (@alexwilliams). From Hobbits to heterogeneous infrastructure, we'll take a look at where the cloud is going and what it will look like when it gets there.
Â
Stick around after the talk, mingle, and catch the breathtaking Portland sunset like you've never seen it before. |

Mobile Portland: Mobile Apps for Coffee Farmers: 10 Lessons Learned in the Field
Roll back
| description |
It's hard to build mobile apps. But it's even harder to build
them them for people very different from yourself â in this case,
coffee farmers in Tanzania. How do you go about building an app
for someone who's never before used a computer, smartphone, or
tablet? How do you convince a farmer to use your app when you
speak different languages, come from different contexts, and
have different needs? How can you ensure that your app is
creating a lasting, positive impact?
This month's Mobile Portland presentation shows how Sustainable
Harvest Coffee Importers faced these challenges, and what they
learned along the way. After deploying iOS apps and mobile
-optimized websites in coffee-growing communities around the
world, Sustainable Harvest has plenty to share. You might be
surprised how lessons learned in places like Moshi, Tanzania and
San Ignacio, Peru apply to Portland, Oregon.
Discussed:
* Developing for audiences who are new to mobile (and computers in
general)
* Deploying technology solutions in distant countries
* Choosing between and maintaining iOS/native and mobile-optimized
web app platforms
* Helping farmers have more sustainable
livelihoods, supported by mobile technology
Join us to learn about Sustainable Harvest's successes â and
challenges â in bringing mobile technology to coffee
cooperatives and farmers around the world. |

Online Startup Summer Camp - Meetup
Roll back
| description |
Online Startup Summer Camp for entrepreneurs is brought to you by OTBC, OEN, TiE, Startup Weekend, SAO, and OAF. This event is one of the (optional) weekly meetups.
This summer, you can take your idea and go through the steps to launch your startup and build an investor pitch, while getting feedback and meeting lots of people.
FORMAT: We'll post weekly online videos each of which covers a key task that's one aspect of preparing for an investor pitch. Week by week, you'll build a pitch deck, while developing and validating your business model.
Participants can ask questions online. In fact, you can do the entire boot camp, online, on your schedule (we know schedules are a challenge during the summer). |

MST3K-style movie mocking of Twilight
Roll back
| description |

"A glorious pairing of movies and comedy"--Entertainment Weekly
"A truly awesome experience!"--Gawker
"Hilarious comedians in front of your eyes, riffing on the movie way better than you and your friends ever could hope to."--Seattlest
"The Twilight series is a particular specialty of Master Pancake Theater" -- Popwatch
"An essential Austin experience" -- Austin Monthly
Smart, fast, and bust-a-gut funny, Master Pancake Theater's comedy (think MST3K mixed with Beavis and Butthead) has lead to years of sold out shows at the legendary Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas. The members of Master Pancake provide live comedy along with the movie, as well as hilarious skits and competitions. Now they're coming to Seattle's SIFF Cinema at the Uptown for a live skewering of the Pacific Northwest's greatest contribution to cinema, TWILIGHT!
This Lost Boys rehash about a teenager who moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest and falls in with the vampire crowd features Kristen Stewart as the new kid in town, and Robert Pattinson as the centuries-old kid in town. Kidding aside, the acting is surprisingly good: Stewart is masterful at her one facial expression, and Pattinson has perfected the pale dead-guy mystique that he honed as Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter series. And if you thought you'd seen every vampires-playing-baseball cliché in the book, just wait 'til you see how director Catherine Hardwicke breathes new life into that tired set piece.
Come out to Cinema 21 and let the bloodletting begin as Master Pancake sucks the life out of this preposterously ghastly modern teen "classic"!
