Beer of Trust Key-Signing
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
"Beer of Trust" is a key signing party with beer, and a chance to hang out and talk about PGP, encryption, and other related things!
## What's a key-signing party?
A key-signing party is a get-together with PGP users for the purpose of meeting other PGP users and signing each other's keys. This helps to extend the "web of trust" to a great degree. Also, it sometimes serves as a forum to discuss strong cryptography and related issues.
## What if I don't have a key yet?
If you don't have a PGP key yet, this is a good chance to get your feet wet. If you bring a computer, you can generate a test key at the event and experiment with sending messages to others there. It can be helpful to have someone present to walk you through the process the first time. It is recommended that you only generate a test key at the event, and later generate your real key in private. See below for links to some helpful resources for securely generating a key.
## What do I need for this party?
If you are bringing a key to sign, then make sure you bring:
* A picture ID or some other way for people to match you to your identity
* Your key ID, key type, hex fingerprint, and key size. You can print out slips of paper to hand out your key info if you'd like.
* A pen/pencil or whatever you'd like to write with
* A computer is not required, and it is not recommended to use your computer to sign keys at the event
At the event, you'll meet others, confirm their key ID in person, and swap key IDs with them. Later when you get home, you can download the full keys and sign them, then upload the signature to the keyserver or email it to them directly.
[RSVP here](http://pin13.net/BoT/2017-03-06/).

Papers We Love: Aaron Turon on "The Next 700 Programming Languages" by Peter J. Landin
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Thanks to Mozilla for hosting!
This month's paper is "The Next 700 Programming Languages" by Peter J. Landin. One of the most influential papers of all time in PL research!
PDF: https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~crary/819-f09/Landin66.pdf
Abstract:
A family of unimplemented computing languages is described that is intended to span differences of application area by a unified framework. This framework dictates the rules about the uses of user-coined names, and the conventions about characterizing functional relationships. Within this framework the design of a specific language splits into two independent parts. One is the choice of written appearances of programs (or more generally, their physical representation). The other is the choice of the abstract entities (such as numbers, character-strings, list of them, functional relations among them) that can be referred to in the language. The system is biased towards “expressions” rather than “statements.” It includes a nonprocedural (purely functional) subsystem that aims to expand the class of users' needs that can be met by a single print-instruction, without sacrificing the important properties that make conventional right-hand-side expressions easy to construct and understand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What was the last paper you read and loved within the realm of computing? What did it inspire you to build or tinker with? Come share the ideas in an awesome academic/research paper with fellow engineers, programmers, and paper-readers. Lead a session and show off code that you wrote that implements these ideas or just give us the lowdown about the paper. Or, just come, listen, and discuss!

Come a little early to say hi. We'll also be hanging out at 6:15pm to help any newcomers needing help to getting started by installing node and npm.
It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little.
New coders and new friends welcome! Say hi, make noise, and ask questions.
Location note:
Look for the friends standing by the door to let you in! If you arrive past 6:35pm, be patient! Or tweet @pdxnode. We'll come get you shortly. |

At this unique meetup, "I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _", each month we introduce a new company through one of their star employees.
This month we will have Michael Belding, VP of Engineering at ShiftWise. Michael helped the engineering team at ShiftWise to grow from 7 to 52 during the 9 years he was a leader there.
We are excited to hear about the talent and culture at ShiftWise and the Portland tech community in general.
Definitely come join us -- hopefully the weather co-operates this month!

<p>This is the first month of our new format, based on discussion following the survey: The first half will be geared toward beginners, and the second half will be geared toward more advanced material.</p> <p>For the next several months the beginner material will be a series of lessons in the Haskell programming language. We will be following Brent Yorgey's CIS 194 syllabus (<a href="http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~cis194/spring13/lectures.html)."></a><a href="http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~cis194/spring13/lectures.html" class="linkified">http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~cis194/spring13/lectures.html</a>). So bring a laptop, or just follow along. Between months you are encouraged to work on the assignments and we will review them. Lyle will be leading the lecture this month.</p> <p>This month's advanced talk will be delivered by Leif, who will be following up his discussion of data parallelism in Spark (Scala) and Haskell.</p> |

Agile Data Warehousing, Building a Virtualized ODS” with Kent Graziano - DAMA PDX
Roll back
| description |
Greetings Portland Lovers of Data, join your local Data User Group downtown on Thursday Feb 16th to learn about “Agile Data Warehousing, Building a Virtualized ODS” with Kent Graziano, Senior Technical Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The Data Warrior blog.
This is our usual monthly Portland Data Management User Group Chapter meeting.
For more information and to register go to: http://www.damapdx.org/ or our new meetup page at: https://www.meetup.com/PDX-Data-Engineering/events/237139605/. Please register at one of those sites, so that we have a count for our usual continental breakfast. Walk-ins are welcome.
<h3>Presentation Summary</h3>
At a past client, in order to meet timelines to fulfill urgent, unmet reporting needs, we found it necessary to build a virtualized Operational Data Store (ODS). This allowed us to deliver new objects, quickly and incrementally to the report developer so we could quickly show the business users their data. In order to limit the need for refactoring in later stages of the data warehouse development, we chose to build this virtualization layer on top of a Type 2 persistent staging layer. All of this was done using the free Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (SDDM) against (gasp!) a MS SQL Server Database.
In this talk, we will show you the architecture for this approach, the rationale, and then some of the tricks used in SDDM to build all the stage tables and views very quickly. In the end you will see actual SQL code for the virtual ODS that you can leverage for your own projects.
<u>Goals</u>
• Learn what a Virtual ODS is and how it can help you be Agile
• Learn a data warehouse architecture that can be implemented incrementally and in layers
• How to quickly build pattern based stage tables in SDDM
• How to build complex, pattern based views in SDDM
• Tips on how to use analytic functions to create virtual columns
• See examples of how to embed change data capture into a view-based ELT loading architecture
<h3>Speaker</h3>
Kent Graziano is a Senior Technical Evangelist with Snowflake Computing and the author of The Data Warrior blog (https://kentgraziano.com/). He is a certified Data Vault Master (CDVP2), Oracle ACE Director, former member of the Boulder BI Brain Trust (#BBBT), expert data modeler and architect with over 30 years of experience, including 25 years doing data warehousing with multiple architectures.
Kent is an award winning speaker and author having written numerous articles, and has given hundreds of presentations, nationally and internationally. He is a co-author of four books including The Data Model Resource Book (1st Edition), and Supercharge Your Data Warehouse. His now has several ebooks on Kindle including A Check List for Doing a Data Model Design Reviews and An Introduction to Agile Data Engineering. You can follow Kent on his blog and twitter @kentgraziano.

Join us for happy hour at Simple to celebrate community!
PDX Women in Tech is proud of our community so we are honoring it as the centerpiece of our February 2017 event. This month’s theme is about loving your communities–the diverse, varied, overlapping communities we exist in. We will hear from two lightning speakers whose lives revolve around building community, and our conversation prompt will be asking each other why community is so important in our lives.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase women in our community who are doing great things.
Introduction to Simple, including what they do and what jobs they are trying to fill.
Meet entrepreneur Deena Pierott, the founder of iUrban Teen and a White House Champion of Change in the Obama administration.
A talk by Allison Krug, a Technical Community Manager at AppNexus and yoga instructor, whose passion is building community both at work and in her spiritual practice.
Remember, throughout the event we will have an activity table for people who want to create during the event. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing.

PDXWIT Presents a Book Talk - Daring Greatly & Being Wrong

RSVP HERE - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-a-book-talk-daring-greatly-being-wrong-tickets-29825019436
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. In Daring Greatly, based on twelve years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.
Similarly, in Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz argues that error is the fundamental human condition and should be celebrated as such. In this view, error is both a given and a gift – one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and, most profoundly, ourselves.
Daring Greatly and Being Wrong were made for each other. Join Deeple Patel and Melody Dawn for a discussion and exploration of these two powerful books and their endless takeaways. Most of us avoid the topics of being wrong and vulnerable, but these two authors have laid out the undeniable reasons for why it is so beneficial for us to push past this fear and discomfort. Whether you read one, both or some portion of these books, you are welcome in the conversation.
Come ready to share your unique perspective and learn from others’ experiences.
