description nil Similar to traits in other languages, Elixir Protocols are contracts that modules can implement for enabling collections (both sinks and sources) and inspection. We'll take a look at Protocols, how to adhere to them and how to create them. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Venue Change: Now at PolySync.

update Calagator::Event 1250471461 OWASP: Boosting the Security of Your Angular Application Roll back

description This month's OWASP chapter meeting features:
Philippe De Ryck, PhD
Web Security Expert @ imec-DistriNet, KU Leuven Talk === Angular 2 is hot, and there is a huge amount of information available on building applications, improving performance, and various other topics. But do you know how to make your Angular 2 applications secure? What kind of security features does Angular 2 offer you, and which additional steps can you take to really boost the security of your applications? In this session, we cover one of the biggest threats in modern web applications: untrusted JavaScript code. You will learn how Angular protects you against XSS, and why you shouldn't bypass this protection. We will also dive into new security mechanisms, such as Content Security Policy. Through a few examples, I will show you how you can use these mechanisms to enhance the security in your client-side context. Speaker === Philippe De Ryck is a professional speaker and trainer on software security and web security. Since he obtained his PhD at the imec-DistriNet research group (KU Leuven, Belgium), he has been running the group's Web Security Training program, which ensures a sustainable knowledge transfer of the group’s security expertise towards practitioners. You can find more about Philippe on https://www.websec.be
The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is a 501c3 not-for-profit worldwide charitable organization focused on improving the security of application software. update Calagator::Event 1250471438 OWASP: Software Composition -- the other 95% of your app's attack surface Roll back

description Abstract Nobody really writes their own code any more, right? We go out to GitHub and download some libraries for our favorite language to do all the hard things for us. Then we download half a dozen front end frameworks to make it all pretty and responsive and we’re off to the races. In my review I’ve found that more than 90% of the code that makes up an app these days is something we borrowed, not wrote ourselves. Now most of us scan our own code for flaws with Static Analysis tools, but what about all the stuff we didn’t write? How do we know what’s actually in there? I’ll tell you how to find out and keep track of what’s in there, and how to avoid getting pwned because you let a nasty in the back door with that whiz-bang library that does the really cool thing you couldn’t live without. Speaker Jeremy Anderson
Application Security Architect
Cambia Health Solutions
Jeremy Anderson is a Secure Software Architect and CSSLP, with experience developing software solutions for numerous fortune 500 companies for almost 20 years. In 2014 he had a run in with InfoSec that spurred him into action as an AppSec superhero where he’s worked for HP then Veracode. Since early 2016 he’s been working with Cambia Health Solutions, bootstrapping and scaling an Application Security program from the ground up supporting hundreds of developers for dozens of applications. Abstract Nobody really writes their own code any more, right? We go out to GitHub and download a some libraries for our favorite language to do all the hard things for us. Then we download a half dozen front end frameworks to make it all pretty and responsive and we’re off the races.
He’s passionate about not just finding security defects, but training ninjas to destroy them.
The Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) is a 501c3 not-for-profit worldwide charitable organization focused on improving the security of application software. I don't love to bathe in the tears of engineers but I love understanding how the systems that run our world fail. Everything from a failed hardware component to a human mistake. I love reading RCAs like murder mysteries. I will cover failure, how to learn from it, and preventing it. I will cover tools, processes, and techniques for reviewing and learning from failure without making people cry. Jesse Dearing is a Lead Site Reliability Engineer at InVisionApp where he wrangles databases and builds tools to manage them. Jesse likes to learn how languages connect to other systems. Jesse likes making everything a Bash one-liner and is his own chaos monkey as a result. When he's not picking apart systems and automating them, he enjoys riding bikes, reading, and spending time with family. pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any related products, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting regularly since August 2010 for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! Join us for the Feb meeting of PdxDevOps. description nil Portland’s technology community has much to celebrate; however, when it comes to having an inclusive and diverse industry we must improve. Diversifying our workforce to include all from our community is the right thing to do, and the data shows it benefits us in terms of innovation, team functioning, and bottom line results. We know that greater diversity leads to greater innovation. Tech + Inclusion Community Conversation is an opportunity for companies who have joined the PDC Diversity Pledge and the community to come together. This event is open to those working in the tech sector, to students and prospective tech sector workers, and those interested in the tech industry. The Tech + Inclusion event will help create partnerships that can ultimately lead to hiring and career advancement of women and people of color in Portland’s Tech industry.
