Roll back

Join us Thursday 7/9 from 5:30-7:00 for an informal discussion about technology and social justice led by Joe Rowe. No signup required.
What's the role of technology in the goals of social justice? Are we really better off? Is technology a tool to widen or shrink the gap between rich and poor? There are inconclusive results about the benefits, and we donât really know much about the negative impacts of our choices to put computers into our lives and schools. This is a book potluck, so bring a book that you've read regarding the paradoxes of technology. Don't have a book? Print an article. Going offline can be fun! |

PDX Git Together

The new [PDX Git Together](https://twitter.com/pdxgit) is fast-forwarding into the future!
We have a new regular venue at Elemental Technologies and there will be food provided by Puppet Labs for those that profess a boundless love for directed acyclic graphs.
Remember to thank Puppet Labs for the food!
During this meeting, Duke will talk about libgit2 and the work his Google Summer of Code student is doing on [parrot-libgit2](https://github.com/letolabs/parrot-libgit2).
There is usually an informal "drinkup" after the meeting at Baileys Tap Room downstairs. If you are headed to the meeting late, we may have migrated there.
Would you like to present at a future PDX Git Together? Send an email to the [pdxgit](http://groups.google.com/group/pdxgit) mailing list and/or contact Duke.
Would you like to sponsor food or other stuff for future PDX Git Togethers? Contact Duke at [email protected] . |

Agile PDX Evening: On Getting Current in the New Web World
Roll back
| description |
Anyone who has seen a few generations of computer technology knows that each generation brings in a whole new vocabulary. It seems like the same old thing but with all of the names changed. Why do they do that?
It helps us get unstuck. That's the short answer. Each generation brings with it unfamiliar capabilities. It takes serious effort to find application for those capabilities and hiding the good stuff among the familiar just makes doing new things harder.
In this presentation I'll describe my own lurch forward over the last two years. The web, which has been stuck in its own way, has busted free. Its a great time to try something new. Some of this is technology, some methodology, and some community. All of it impresses me. Let me tell you why it's important.
Bio: Ward Cunningham made the first wiki 18 years ago to host the conversation that became agile software developments. Now, two years into developing a truly modern wiki he finds that he must approach programming a completely different way.
This event is free and is at Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion.

Benchmarking and Technology Forecasting using DEA in R and Shiny
Roll back
| description |
<p>Tim Anderson's group from PSU will present at our July meetup!</p>
<p><strong>Title:</strong> <br>
Benchmarking and Technology Forecasting using DEA in R and Shiny</p>
<p><strong>Description:</strong> <br>
The PSU <a href="http://www.pdx.edu/extreme-technology-analytics/">Extreme Technology Analytics</a> Group is working on developing R and Shiny tools for doing quantitative benchmarking and forecasting of new product capabilities using Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA. Experiences of working on a new package will be discussed, application area opportunities, and a demo of the R-Shiny web app will be covered.</p>
<p><em>Okay, that was a mouthful.</em> How do we use this? DEA can be used for benchmarking a wide range of applications including schools, factories, employees, and hospitals.</p>
<p>A new approach for technology forecasting using DEA, TFDEA, has been developed at Portland State and allows us to predict where product technology is moving. Past applications include hybrid electric vehicles, microprocessors, LCD panels, fighter jets, and many others.</p> |

Puppet Triage-a-Thon 2013
Roll back
| description |

Interested in contributing to Puppet? Want to come hang out with fun people and do geeky things all day? Come to our Triage-A-Thon on Saturday, July 13!
Anyone can participate. Our goal is to review all the open tickets in the Puppet and Module projects. We’ll assign blocks of tickets to every participant, explain what you need to do, and provide people on the ground to answer questions and help you make decisions.
We’ll also provide bagels, a delicious lunch (from Nicholas), snacks and space in our Portland, OR offices. Virtually we’ll provide an IRC channel (#puppethack), IM, and rewards for people who triage tickets and get involved.
The first 200 people who help for at least 2 hours will be sent a special edition Puppet Triage-a-Thon 2013 t-shirt, and we'll have additional prizes for top participants! |
