create Calagator::Event 1250464598 Galois tech talk: Type-directed compilation in the wild: Haskell and Core Roll back

description nil Academic papers often describe typed calculi, but it is rare to find one in a production compiler. Indeed, I think the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (GHC) may be the only production compiler in the world that really has a remorselessly statically-typed intermediate language, informally called "Core", or (when writing academic papers) the more respectable-sounding "System FC". As real compilers go, GHC's Core language is tiny: it is a slight extension of System F, with letrec, data types, and case expressions. Yet all of Haskell (now a bit of a monster) gets translated into it. In the last few years we have added one new feature to Core, namely typed (but erasable) coercions that witness type equalities, which turn Core into a particular kind of proof-carrying code. This single addition has opened the door to a range of source-language extensions, such as GADTs and type families. In this talk I'll describe Core, and how it has affected GHC's development over the last two decades, concentrating particularly on recent developments, coercions, evidence, and type families. To test your mettle I hope to end up with the problem we are currently wrestling with: proving consistency of a non-terminating rewrite system with non-left-linear rules.

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Disk Aware Discord Discovery: Finding Unusual Time Series in Terabyte Sized Datasets](http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~eamonn/DiskawareDiscords.pdf) by Yankov, Keogh and Rebbapragada. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.

create Calagator::Event 1250464589 RESCHEDULED MST3K IN JULY! 513- THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE Roll back

description nil <p>I apologize for the late notice folks, but I've had to reschedule this screening to the following Tuesday the 23rd... Hope to see you all there!</p> <p>--------------------</p> <p>The wonderful folks at Beulahland have graciously opened their doors to our Meetup group for watching MST3K, so let's start things off on Tuesday, July 23rd at 7:30 PM by watching the first episode hosted by Mike Nelson, number 513- THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE!</p> <p>If you've never seen it, this bleak piece of sci-fi film noir isn't really in black-and-white as it is in shades of dark and even darker grey - almost as dark as all of the character's souls! When his girlfriend loses her head in a car accident, a slightly-angry doctor decides to keep her noggin alive long enough to find her a sleazy new body. Mike gets his riffing sea legs under him, while Tom and Crow marvel at the tawdry side of the swinging '60s.</p> <p>We'll console ourselves with Beulahland's wide variety of beverages (both alcoholic and non) and yummy food. We'll be starting the flick right at 7:30 in order for it to finish by 9 PM, when Beulahland changes to 21+, but feel free to hang around and chat with your fellow MSTies - we don't bite!</p> <p>Although Beulahland DOESN'T have a drink/food beverage minimum, we'd really like to get invited again, so please purchase at least 1 beverage, if you're able.</p> <p>Any questions, go ahead and post them on the Meetup Event page. Hope to see you there!</p>

Experiences of working on a new package will be discussed, application area opportunities, and a demo of the R-Shiny web app will be covered.</p> <p><em>Okay, that was a mouthful.</em> How do we use this? DEA can be used for benchmarking a wide range of applications including schools, factories, employees, and hospitals.</p> <p>A new approach for technology forecasting using DEA, TFDEA, has been developed at Portland State and allows us to predict where product technology is moving. Past applications include hybrid electric vehicles, microprocessors, LCD panels, fighter jets, and many others.</p>

update Calagator::Event 1250464583 PDXNode presentation night Roll back

description Wraithan will share his experiences with developing IRC bots in Node.js to follow-up last month's Adam Ulvi(@s5fs) explaining the How and Why of IRC. Dave Manning will be sharing his thoughts on the implementation of Streams 2 API. We'll also be starting a couple of monthly segments and would LOVE your participation and submissions-- 1. "Stump the Chump", a 15-minute round of anything-goes, ask any question that's been irking you about Node.js. Those williing can stand up to help answer the question in an open, friendly learning environment. 2. "Modules You Should Know", a different module featured each month. We'd love for people to take a stab at this lightning-style talk. Learn a module, share it with us, help close that discovery gap that is growing in Node.js! It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little. Newbies welcome and encouraged! create Calagator::Event 1250464582 Nerd Nite #5: Sex, Bugs, and Rigor Mortis Roll back

description nil Nerd Nite is a monthly event that strives for an inebriated, salacious, yet deeply academic vibe. Featuring short talks by several scientists, artists, experts of all types, and ordinary people with extraordinary skills, we aim to entertain, educate, elucidate, enlighten, and other things that start with "e." Come drink along with us! <b>When:</b> Tuesday, July 30, 2013, doors at 6:00pm, event at 7:00pm <b>Where:</b> <a href="http://www.mcmenamins.com/210-mission-theater-home" target="_blank">Mission Theater</a>, 1624 NW Glisan, Portland <b>Cost</b>: $8.00 suggested cover at the door <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/166976856818482/">Check out the Facebook event page</a> This Nerd Nite will feature two awesome talks: • <i><b>Genital Plugs, Projectile Penises, and Gay Butterflies: A Naturalist Explains the Birds & the Bees</b></i> with Becky Jaffe, photographer, naturalist, and educator • <b><i>Bugs, Bites, and Bodies: Insects and Death</i></b> with Eric Tonsfeldt, Medicolegal Death Investigator, Clackamas County Medical Examiner’s Office ___________ <b><i>Genital Plugs, Projectile Penises, and Gay Butterflies: A Naturalist Explains the Birds & the Bees</i></b> Birds do it, bees do it–even educated fleas do it. Let’s do it, let’s fall in lust as photographer and insect fetishist Becky Jaffe takes us on a romp through Mother Nature’s freaky side. Biophilia? This talk may well bring on a biorgasm! A photographer, naturalist, and educator living in Oakland, <a href="http://beckyjaffephotography.com" target="_blank">Becky Jaffe</a> teaches high school biology and leads environmental science tours at UC Berkeley’s Botanical Garden. ___________ <b><i>Bugs, Bites, and Bodies: Insects and Death</i></b> To an insect, a decomposing human body left to rot in the woods can be the feast of a lifetime. To a forensic entomologist, those insects can give clues to how the person died, how long they’ve been dead, and even who that person was in life. Eric Tonsfeldt, Medicolegal Death Investigator at the Clackamas County Medical Examiner’s Office, will explain the ways that bugs can be used to help forensic investigation. Prepare to be creeped out (but in a good way!). ___________ *A note on the suggested cover: Nerd Nite is completely supported by money collected at the door. We are committed to offering education to adults who want to learn, so if $8 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can.

description nil With OSCON in town this week, bringing to town many from the functional programming community among others, we thought it would be a good idea to hold a casual functional programming meetup. There's no agenda and no talks, but there will be beer and good conversation. We'll be meeting up on the patio at Green Dragon. If you're just visiting and are worried you won't recognize the geeks when you get there (we're usually easy enough to spot), feel free to ping people on the PDXFunc mailing list (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pdxfunc) or on IRC at #pdxfunc.
