Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group!
As we've been doing for some months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry.
We look forward to see you all there! |

Retail is changing. The way consumers are shopping is changing. From smart phones, to tablets, to physical stores, enterprise retailers are battling for their bottom line. These problems are difficult and expensive to solve internally. ## Stalking the Lost Write: Memory Visibility in Concurrent Java
Throughout its 18-year evolution, the Java language has played an industry-leading role in the tricky business of specifying the behavior of concurrent programs. Java's contribution became particularly evident with the introduction of the Java Memory Model (JMM) in Java 1.5.
This is an area in which a down-to-the-metal understanding can help developers strike the right balance between safety and performance, so we'll start by motivating the discussion with counterintuitive low-level examples. Then we'll work "up from the weeds" to describe the JMM as a basis for more familiar programming patterns. We'll touch on how C, C++, and C# deal with the same issues and give a nod to functional languages and Java 8.
This material can help most developers become more insightful about concurrency issues in their code. Be there or be unsynchronized! |

* Wraithan Our resident IRC champion, will be running a tutorial on IRC bots: "from installing libraries to connecting to a channel to reacting to what someone said".
* Newb at Everything @edrex will demo his current tooling for publishing sites. Hopefully this will inspire some epic nerd battles and/or pull requests at the pub later.
Presentations start at 7pm. We welcome open dialogue during the presenations. We're all here to learn!
Come a little early to say hi. We'll also be hanging out at 6:30pm to help any newcomers needing help to gettting started by installing node and npm.
It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little. |

Please join us on December 16 at Jama Software to discuss *Go for System Administrators* with Kelsey Hightower.
Created just 4 years ago, Go has been gaining traction in many areas from core system services like DNS and CDN, devops applications like Packer and Docker, and continues to stretch further into web applications and general processing utilities. Kelsey will be discussing the benefits he has realized by using Go as an admin's tool. I look forward to seeing everyone there!
Kelsey is the Director of Software Engineering at Monsoon Commerce, co-editor of the Golang Newsletter and recently gained committer status to Packer.
*This month our meeting is sponsored by [**Volt Workforce Solutions**](http://www.volt.com/volt+workforce+solutions.aspx).
Many thanks to Volt for supplying the pizza and to Jama for hosting the event!*
ABOUT THE GROUP: pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. PDXCloud December Gathering
Roll back
| description |
PDXCloud met for the first time in November 2012, and now it's time to celebrate our one year anniversary!
This Wednesday we will have a panel of guests talking around the theme, "Why We Chose Cloud, and What We've Learned". We have a group of panelists (many thanks to those that have agreed to sit on the panel so far), and we still have room for a few more if anyone is interested. If you have any inclination to answer questions about your company's use of cloud technologies and the factors and decisions that went into selecting those technologies, please send me an email ([email protected]). No presentations will be required, this will mainly be a Q&A session.
For the rest of you, bring plenty of questions for our panelists!
As usual, we'll have pizza, beer, and other refreshments, and additionally, we'll have a birthday cake to celebrate PDXCloud's 1 year anniversary!
As usual, doors open at 6:30pm, meeting starts at 7pm. Hope to see you on Wednesday! |

| description |
Please plan to join us Wednesday, November 13 for our monthly Chapter Meeting.
Date: Wednesday, November 13
Time: Check-in 4:30, Speaker at 5:00
Place: Intel - Bldg HF3 - Auditorium
Speaker: Denis Barbini, PhD - Universal Instruments
Topic:
Failure Analysis: Lessons Learned
Manufacturing and Field Reliability With a Focus on Failure Analysis of Assembly Case Studies
When reviewed in conjunction with research, failures provide a unique perspective on design for manufacturability and reliability. This presentation will provide valuable lessons learned from practical experience through discussion of material selection, current electronics research and failure analysis case studies. Design considerations for advanced assembly processes and analytical techniques for materials characterization will also be covered. In addition, a review of lead-free laminate selection and testing procedures will shed some light on the question, âCan your board withstand 9x reflow?â
Members of the SMTA Portland Chapter are encouraged to bring specific questions or examples of surface mount process difficulties to be shared in an open discussion at the end of the presentation.
⢠Major difficulties in lead-free reliability testing
⢠Mixed alloy assembly best practices
⢠ENEPIG intermetallic formation morphologies
⢠PCB plating considerations
⢠Analytical testing techniques
⢠Root causes of production failures
⢠Failure analysis studies â Fine-pitch printing, PoP, 01005 defects and high Tg laminate failures

March PADNUG - Mobile First Responsive Design by Jason Grigsby
Roll back
| description |
Mobile first and responsive web design arenât simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive designs.
Mobile first responsive web design is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective.
But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this presentation, weâll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work.
Jason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Application and helped design the user interface for the Wall Street Journalâs Blackberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland, a local mobile development user group. Jason built his first web page in 1995. He has spent the last 11 years building web sites professionally before being bitten by the mobile bug prompting him to throw caution to the wind and start a new company focused on mobile and web development. He blogs at CloudFour.com (http://cloudfour.com/) and can be found on Twitter as @grigs (http://twitter.com/grigs).
