On January 30, BBPDX members and the general public can attend our first policy event of 2018 with regional leaders like Multnomah County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson, Portland Bureau of Transportation's Director Leah Treat, former Washington Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson, and ZGF Architects’ Nolan Lienhart. During the panel moderated by Oregon Humanities’ director Adam Davis, we’ll explore why it’s critical for businesses to engage in our region’s transportation challenges and how BBPDX members can make a difference.
Over the past year, we’ve traveled with delegations of Portlanders to Los Angeles and Denver to learn about how diverse stakeholder groups collaborated to secure voter support for multi-billion dollar investments in regional transit and congestion relief. We learned about inspiring partnerships like the one from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce that invited in regional environmentalists to work in the Chamber office on a shared vision.
Additionally, at both the state and local levels, agencies are considering various approaches to address our clogged roadways including congestion pricing. Our member Luke Kanies wrote about this approach last year in the Portland Tribune.
Big challenges call for bold visions and solutions oriented collaborations. We look forward to seeing you on January 30 and exploring how we can work together to create a more efficient and equitable transportation system for Portland. |

<h3>Overview - Business Applications of Blockchain Technology </h3>
Presented by Mark Wheeler, Portland State University
Blockchain technology is being talked about as one of the next big innovations to take hold across multiple industries. Businesses who focus on transactions, contracts, and assets management are just a few of the initial sectors of the economy which will be disrupted. As the underlying technology begins to take hold, time-consuming and labor-intensive functions will be replaced by automated and “always on” smart processes. Centralized models of trust and authenticity will be replaced by decentralized services and crowd-based consensus algorithms.
There will not be one blockchain but millions, each built on an application-specific architectures. Any store of information that requires exchange or validation across indirectly related entities will reside on a blockchain. Blockchains are safe, secure, and immutable — but all blockchains are not created equal. We will explore the subject by examining several current generations of blockchain implementations.

Mark Wheeler is a Blockchain technology enthusiast attending Portland State University majoring in Supply Chain Management. He has extensive experience in IT Operations working on Security, Network, and Application Server environments. Mark has worked within the education, insurance, healthcare, software development, telecommunication, and aerospace sectors of the economy.
His current interests are in the field of data analytics, cloud computing, and Supply Chain automation technologies. Mark has been a volunteer for the last two years with HackOregon working on visualizing public data. He is currently employed at Portland State University assisting in the implementations of their Community Engagement portal platform.

The Portland Metro Chapter of the Data Administration Management Association has been serving the Portland data community since 1984. We are a not-for-profit, vendor independent, professional association dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of enterprise information and data resource management.

Starting up a venture can be filled with big questions we have trouble answering well. This is especially true when it comes to your finances and accounting.
This event will bring local experts who can help you get a clear perspective accounting choices and structures.
We plan to go over some very basic concepts as groundwork that can set a solid foundation. Things like;
• Basic accounting terms (asset, liability, revenue, Cost of goods sold, Operating Expenses, Gross profit, net profit, fixed expense, variable expense) • Basic accounting principles (measurement, matching, recognition, etc.)
• Balance sheet & Income statements (can’t fly without knowing what the instruments are saying)
• Cash-flow planning & budgeting.
• Profitability vs. solvency. The first doesn’t always mean the second.
• Capital requirements (equip, raw material, inventory, etc.)
• Cash-to-cash cycle
We also plan to do some hands-on exercises in Excel. So bring your laptops and get ready to get your fingers dirty in some exciting accounting. Ok, maybe that's a stretch but, it learning your way around these core principles and more and make a night and day difference in your Startup. That! is fun!
So come out an join us! You won't regret a minute of it!

The words we use matter, and we at PDXWIT have decided to be more intentional about our use of language to ensure everyone feels included and safe. Join us on this journey at Viewpoint where we dedicate the event to Inclusive Language. Our topic of conversation will start with the question “how can language be more inclusive in your work environment?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase women in our community.

How does it work?
Here’s the scoop:
The event starts with 15 minutes of networking. We will also encourage you to reconvene informally at the end.
3 projects will be selected for presentation.
Each project presenter has a total of 20 minutes for their project (10 minutes to present, 10 minutes for brainstorming challenge solutions and receiving feedback). Presentations will be timed.
Presenters have the option of a free one hour presentation coaching session with Tambre Leighn, a certified high performance coach who specializes in training experts in the medical, research, and technology sectors to present powerfully and with ease.
How do I apply to present?
Register for the event by selecting the “Presenter” ticket type by February 12th, 2018.
We will notify selected presenters by email on February 16th, 2018.
What if I want to attend but not present?
Register for the event by selecting the “General Admission” ticket type.
