The DAMA Portland Chapter Board, in conjunction with our sponsors WhereScape, are proud to welcome back one of our most popular speakers, Dean Abbott of Abbott Analytics. Dean is one of Cognilytica's 50 Data Science Influencers to follow for 2018.
This training is all day in downtown Portland Oregon, with Breakfast and Lunch provided. Dean will present four progressive sessions covering the building and deployment of predictive models. The sessions will include demos, and Dean prefers a largely interactive format allowing plenty of time for Q&A both during the sessions and at the end of the day.

The Presenter
</h3>
Dean Abbott has over 21 years of experience applying advanced data mining, data preparation, and data visualization methods in real-world data intensive problems. In addition, Dean has developed and evaluated algorithms for use in commercial data mining and pattern recognition products, including polynomial networks, neural networks, radial basis functions, and clustering algorithms.
Dean is a seasoned instructor, having taught a wide range of data mining tutorials and seminars. He is the instructor of well-regarded data mining courses, explaining concepts in language readily understood by a wide range of audiences, including analytics novices, data analysts, statisticians, and business professionals. Dean has also has taught both applied and hands-on data mining courses for a number of large software vendors.

SAST and the Bad Human Code Project
Static application security testing (SAST) is the automated analysis of source code both in its text and compiled forms. Lint is considered to be one of the first tools to analyze source code and this year marks its 40th anniversary. Even though it wasn't explicitly searching for security vulnerabilities back then, it did flag suspicious constructs. Today there are a myriad of tools to choose from both open source and commercial. We’ll talk about things to consider when evaluating web application scanners then turn our attention to finding additional ways to aggregate and correlate data from other sources such as git logs, code complexity analyzers and even rosters of students who completed secure coding training in an attempt to build a predictive vulnerability model for any new application that comes along.
We’re also looking for people to contribute to a new open source initiative called “The Bad Human Code Project.” The goal is to create a one-stop corpus of intentionally vulnerable code snippets in as many languages as possible.

This talk will describe work in Smart Cities in the Portland region. We’ll begin with the framework and motivation for the Smart Cities work and the question What is a Smart City? We’ll discuss Portland’s approach to Smart Cities, provide some historical context and then give an overview of ongoing Smart Cities projects including work on AV policy, the Portland Urban Data Lake, new sensors and earthquake resilience. The goal of the talk is to give the audience an overview of the work being done in Portland to bring a human face to data and technology and to inspire question and discussion.
Dr. Tufte is actively involved in Portland’s Smart Cities work and was the data lead on the City of Portland’s Smart Cities proposal. Dr. Tufte has collaborated closely with transportation agencies in the Portland-Vancouver area for the past ten years and directs PORTAL — the regional transportation data archive. Factor is a programming language which has been in development for a little over 5 years. Factor is influenced by Forth, Lisp, Smalltalk. Factor takes the best ideas from Forth — simplicity, short, succint, code, emphasis on interactive testing, and meta-programming. Factor also brings modern high-level language features such as garbage collection, object orientation and functional programming familiar to users of languages such as Lisp, Smalltalk and Python. Finally, recognizing that no programming language is an island, Factor is portable, ships with a full-featured standard library, deploys stand-alone binaries, and interoperates with C and Objective-C.
In this talk, I will give the rationale for Factor’s creation, present an overview of the language, and show how Factor can be used to solve real-world problems with a minimum of fuss. At the same time, I will emphasize Factor’s extensible syntax, meta-programming and reflection capabilities, and show that these features, which are unheard of in the world of mainstream programming languages, make programs easier to write, more robust, and fun.

Slava was born in the former USSR and emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 7. He moved to Ottawa, Canada when he was 18 to study for a Bachelors and Masters degree in Mathematics. He now resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. An early adopter of Java, Slava wrote the popular jEdit text editor, then went on to design and implement the Factor programming language. At his day job he hacks on web apps, optimizing compilers, garbage collectors, and everything in between

Galois has been holding weekly technical seminars for several years on topics from functional programming, formal methods, compiler and language design, to cryptography, and operating system construction, with talks by many figures from the programming language and formal methods communities.

This workshop is an intermediate to advanced workshop with an emphasis on designing security automation for regulated workloads in AWS (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, HIPAA, DFARs (800-171), FERPA and others).
The result will enable cloud engineers and security practitioners to design, architect and implement automation in an AWS customer account to automatically enforce compliance requirements. It will also enable attendees to document their security governance/audit readiness through integration of AWS Security Partners from our AWS Marketplace and Security Competency Partners and Solutions.

AWS customers continue to struggle demonstrating alignment with security, compliance and audit requirements, such as the PCI-DSS. Additionally, many compliance requirements necessitate administrative and operational security controls that lack technical validation.
This workshop is designed to instruct AWS cloud engineers, DevOps team members, security practitioners, and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSP) how to secure and manage regulated customer workloads in AWS. This class will focus on the security of an AWS customer account design (e.g. AWS CIS Foundation Benchmark), security architecture (e.g. AWS CIS 3-Tier Web Benchmark) and security automation leading practices. This month's agenda: exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.
This month our special guest is Nicholas Chun, manager of the Oregon Population Forecast Program (OPFP). The OPFP produces regularly updated, coordinated population forecasts for Oregon counties and cities to assist them with their long term land use planning strategies. In addition to his primary role, Nick regularly create demographic profiles for customized areas using census data. Most of his data extraction and manipulation is done in R studio because of its flexibility and diverse number of packages. Among other things, Nick will be demonstrating how to use R to grab census data from the official APIs and produce basic choropleth maps. Bring your questions and come prepared to learn!
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.

DESCRIPTION: The Cinema of Horrors is a unique Halloween production featuring multiple haunted attractions for guests of all ages to
experience. In addition, we feature delicious fair food vendors, nightly performances by sword swallowers and other sideshow performers, plus haunted scare-zones all at Three Rivers Mall in Kelso, WA. The Cinema of Horrors is an all ages, family friendly event but recommended for audiences 13 years or older.
