Any aspiring Linux hacker would do well to understand a little bit about how SSH works, and what it can do.

In this presentation, we're taking you through the basics of the ubiquitous OpenSSH implementation. We're going to cover the SSH client, the server, keys, best practices, and useful features like tunneling.

To participate in the interactive portion of the event, bring a laptop that runs MacOS, or Linux either natively or in a virtual machine.

As a supplement, we will be distributing digital copies of SSH Mastery by Michael Lucas.

Please RSVP if you're coming, and let us know if you can't make it so we can make room for others.
|

West Portland One Hour Hike
Roll back
| description |
Welcome, Knowledge Mavens! We're going to try something a little bit different and new. Our group is very interested in hiking as a group.
If the weather cooperates, we'll take a short 1-hour hike at Woods Memorial Natural Area. Don't forget your water and hiking shoes. We'll aim to hike for 1-2 miles. It will be a fairly easy hike.
If you're an advanced hiker or trail guide, we welcome you for your expertise. We'll plan to spend some time hiking and getting to know each other and also spend some time with mindfulness.
Here's more info about the park.
https://www.portlandoregon.gov/parks/finder/index.cfm?&action=ViewPark&propertyid=866
We'll gather everyone at the gate entrance at 1pm and have some intros and then start our hike at 1:10. Thank you for being prompt!

We're going to try something a little bit different and new. Our group is very interested in a hike and our co-organizer suggested a fun activity Geocaching. How about trying both? We're updating the location to Tualatin Hills Nature Park/Center.
It's forecasted to rain, but we'll try anyway; it is Oregon. You can choose to hike, Geocache, or both. We'll spend about an hour together and you can choose to spend more time on your own.
If you're interested in Geocaching you can download the app. It's free and all you need to do is register before we go.

WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY? (2019)
Roll back
| description |
What is Technology? (2019) will examine interactions and transactions among (1) practical arts and tools, (2) techniques and processes, (3) moral knowledge and imagination, to navigate our everchanging media/life/universe. In a broad sense, technology can be understood as (4) methods of intelligent inquiry and problem-solving in all domains of human life.
This year marks the ten-year anniversary and ninth annual What is…?, bringing together natural and social scientists, scholars, government officials, industry professionals, artists and designers, as well as alumni, students, community organizations, and the public. We invite proposals for scholarly papers, panels, and installations on a wide variety of issues and topics.

“[John Dewey] thought of technology as inquiry into techniques, tools, and artifacts. And he thought that techniques are among the habits that are necessary to the continuance and growth of human life. He therefore thought that the major human problem was improving intelligence, which he identified with technology. And this means no more or less than developing better and more productive methods of inquiry into our techniques, our tools, and our artifacts. […] what are commonly called the ‘theoretical sciences’ such as chemistry and biology are no less cases of this type of activity than what are commonly called ‘material technologies’ such as mechanical engineering and crop science. Theoretical knowing, such as that involved in mathematics, is no less a case of technological activity than is the type of knowing that is involved with concrete, practical outcomes such as building bridges. Because the theoretical is also artifactual, even what is sometimes called ‘pure research’ is a type of technology.”. —Larry Hickman, 2009
|

If you walk through the finance or accounting department at any major corporate office, you will see computer screens filled with Excel spreadsheets outlining financial results, budgets, forecasts, and plans used to make big business decisions. Marketing and Product professionals using Excel to list customer and sales targets; managing thier sales force and planning future marketing plans based on past results. Pivot tables to quickly and easily summarize customer and sales data by category with a quick drag-and drop. HR professionals using giant spreadsheets full of employee data and understand exactly where the costs are coming from and how to best plan and control them for the future. Supply logistic professional to manage inventory and forecasts demand.
In essence, you can turn an entire department around just because you know how to manipulate data in order to get an aggregate view.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Martin Jetton has 30+ years of advanced supply chain analytics, predictive analytics, and statistical consulting experience. He's currently a Principal at the Liberty Advisor Group, where he works in advanced supply chain analytics. In his previous role, he was the Senior Predictive Consultant at Corios; where he developed predictive models and scorecards, forecast trends, identify uncertainties, and assign the ideal strategies to maximize performance. The firm’s clients are in the banking, brokerage, credit, utilities and healthcare industries.

BENEFITS

MAKE YOUR RESUME STAND OUT
They are NOT seeing if you simply have Excel as a skill. They are diving deeping when it comes to determining which candidate to interview and hire. They look for Pivot Table, VLOOKUP, Macros, VBA, Conditional Formatting, Charting and Filtering…These are far more telling of your ability to an employer then writing Excel. Someone who writes VLOOKUP, Pivot Table, Filtering demonstrates an ability to analyse data and so has eliminated a potential barrier in the mind of the hiring manager reviewing your resume. In essence, use actual Excel functions in your Resume!

WHO SHOULD COME?

People whose work is completed through MS Excel; Software Engineers, Finance Professionals, HR Professionals, Marketing Professionals, Project Managers, Technology Professionals.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS?

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION: PLEASE CONTACT US AT [email protected].

SOLD OUT?

This is one of our high demand classes. In the case, we sale out; email us at [email protected] and ask when our next course will be in. |

As we navigate our work environments we encounter conflict. There are many ways we find conflict. Conflict between team members, conflict within the team, conflict between teams.
What we want to explore is how is conflict good, and when it should be embraced, and when is conflict bad, and should be avoided.
What techniques do we have in our collective toolboxes to deal with conflict, address it head on, or work with our teams to avoid the conflict for everyones benefit.
Everyone is invited, and you can share your ideas if you want to. You are always welcome within our community of practice. Please join us at Ringlers Pub for great food, great conversation, and good beer. |

Portland Deep Learning discussion topics: 1) privacy and ML and 2) The Fast.AI library

We're back to our discussion format so there will be no presentation this month. Instead be prepared to share your insights and experiences on 1) privacy and ML and 2) The Fast.AI library.
Privacy for ML is a big topic so we'll start by reviewing the PySyft project, paper and tutorials. PySyft is a Python library for secure, private Deep Learning. PySyft decouples private data from model training, using Multi-Party Computation (MPC) within PyTorch. Links to materials are at: https://github.com/OpenMined/PySyft/tree/master/examples/tutorials
Fast.ai is a company dedicated to making the power of deep learning accessible to all. They've done this with their live courses at Unisversity of San Francisco, the corresonding free online MOOC, many free talks and presentations, and a deep learning framework built on top of PyTorch. I've heard many good things about the framework so lets dig into it and discuss it at the meeting. More info at: https://docs.fast.ai |

AgilePDX: Lean Coffee in the North
Roll back
| description |
Join us for coffee/tea or beverage of your choice and fun discussions about how to overcome challenges we face or to share about Agile-inspired and other topics we agree or disagree with. This event is aimed at getting people in the North and NE areas of Portland together to facilitate discussions. It's not exclusive to people that live in the North and NE, just closer to those parts of the city to make it easier to come out. (If you want something other than tea or coffee, you'll have to bring it with you. We'll have hot water and cups available.)
**Percipio Consulting Group is opening up their offices to host this event.**
Percipio is a business consulting firm that helps companies identify opportunities for improvement and successfully implement meaningful changes. That means more efficient processes, shored-up controls, a technology solution that really works for you, or all of the above. They have helped many companies, both Fortune 500 and mid-sized, navigate complex projects by truly understanding business needs and defining up front what success will look like.
**Parking:** Use the Gotham Building Parking lot on the corner of N Page St and N Borthwick Ave.
**Building Entry:** Entry to the building is best through the door by Little Gotham Coffee. We'll have someone meeting on time attendees at the door. For those that run a few minutes late due to traffic or other reasons out of your control, there will be directions at the door on how to contact someone to let you in.
We'll spend the first few minutes gathering discussion ideas, then roll right into the smooth easy cadence of the lively chatter.
##**New to Lean Coffee?**
It's a great way to have real, focused dialogue and we often discuss matters of agile, lean and such - but anything goes. As far as the mechanics, here's the format we'll follow:
**Step 1:** Everybody writes down proposed topics on stickies, placing them in the center of the table. Take as much time as needed, but typically takes only 3-5 minutes (or whenever coffee is ready).
**Step 2:** Each topic is briefly described by its writer to get a flavor for the subject (15-30 seconds typically per sticky).
**Step 3:** Each person gets five votes which they indicate by marking the voted-for sticky with their Sharpie. Mark with a plus + if you agree with the topic and want to discuss it, or a minus - if you disagree and want to discuss it, mark it with a dot if you want to hear the discussion and maybe join in. You can put all votes on one, one across many, however you feel. Each mark counts as one vote.
**Step 4:** The top vote-getting stickies are placed in the ToDo column, ordered by the stickies with the most votes at the top. In an Agile fashion, we'll use groupings of ToDo, Doing, Done and Lessons learned.
**Step 5:** Each of these stickies are discussed for 5 minutes, most votes first. The facilitator takes a quick "Cesar" (thumbs up/down) vote at the five-minute timer, and she moves on for three more minutes if the discussion still has majority interest. When complete, move the sticky over to the Done column. Rinse and repeat.
**Step 6:** wrap-up thoughts at the end - what one idea or person did you most enjoy, then break for home/drinks/cover. |

AgilePDX - Virtual Pub Lunch: Agile Tools
Roll back
| description |

**Please RSVP at our Meetup event and get the Zoom connection info:**
https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/256511527/
Has traffic or location prevented you from joining an agile discussion group? Not close to PDX or SEA Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer!
This agile lunch discussion is a collaborative effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there. The event is held on a zoom conference line. We've learned using video is best, and you might consider your environment before joining -- find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted or feel self conscious. We're monitoring chat as a back channel, so if you can't find a spot in the discussion, add your question in chat and our hosts will try to work it in.
**This week's topic:**
Agile Tools: what are the best "agile tools"? Our world is filled with apps and programs to help us with our jobs, from work management, communication, white-boarding, prototyping, source control, IDEs, to virtual pairing systems and beyond. Some are very useful, ensuring we communicate and work effectively. And sometimes tools are in the way, and we get stuck in a labyrinth of features & functions.
Our agile tool discussion will lead with the manifesto value of "Individuals and interactions over processes and tools." Join the discussion to tell us what your favorite tools are to support individuals & interactions. Come and hear what your colleagues think and share your own experiences with tools that have supported you. We are not endorsing any specific tools as part of this chat, but likely many different ones will be discussed.

PDXHCD Human-centered Community Gathering

We're finishing out 2018 having collectively presented roughly 85 human-centered events. Let's celebrate with a Human-centered Community Gathering!
We’ll be joining Portland’s human-centered groups who are passionate about HCD principles and how they can change the way we work and live. You can RSVP with one of the groups listed below or the [Count Me In button, here](http://pdxhcd.org/articles/wrapping-up-2018). This is an informal event so signing up is more about getting you a reminder in your email when you need it.
You’ll have an opportunity to:
* Share insights with folks across the many fields that intersect in HCD in Portland
* Shape this community by giving feedback on a few ideas we have been working on for 2019 on how to bring the human-centered communities closer together.
Some of the groups that will be there include:
* Design Thinking For Social Impact
* OpenIDEO - Portland Chapter
* PDX Design Research Group
* Portland Accessibility and User Experience Meetup
* Portland Community Design Thinkers
* Service Design PDX
We support introverts, extroverts, and everyone in-between at this event. Don’t be shy, or do — either way, join the fun and help shape our community!
This event is sponsored by PDXHCD. Want to know more about the human centered disciplines in Portland? Take a look at the event calendar at [pdxhcd.org](http://pdxhcd.org/). |

Write the Docs Portland December Meetup: Minimum Viable Documentation for RESTful APIs

Our December meetup features a presentation by Mike Jang (Senior Staff Technical Writer at ForgeRock), as well as several very important announcements for the community. You don't want to miss this!
Here's a teaser for Mike's presentation, "Minimum Viable Documentation for RESTful APIs":
To paraphrase a James Bond movie, "Swagger is not enough..."
...You've done the work to set up OpenAPI specification REST calls for your APIs (Inaccurately known as "Swagger"). You have reference information. But you discover that few users are actually trying REST calls on your system. You're wondering: "What else do I need?"
This presentation will describe the Minimal Viable Documentation (MVD) for RESTful APIs, also known as "What do I need for my developer portal?"
Based loosely on Kristof Van Tomme's presentations on Developer Experience, Mike will describe the MVD for a developer portal, what will help your developers try out your APIs. |
