Startup Coffee Hour Meetaway

For people working in startups or around the startup scene, Startup Coffee Hour is a 1-hour agendaless and speakerless event where you’ll meet new people and have the opportunity to talk about what you care about.
We're running this event over Meetaway -- the format is back-to-back 1on1 conversations over video call where you'll have the ability to choose who you meet. It's an efficient way to digest a thought with other entrepreneurs and get back to your day.
RSVP and we'll send you a link to join.

Indie.vc v 3.0 - Winter Tour 2019
Roll back
| description |
Over the last few years, we’ve had the chance to host many events that expose founders to an alternative universe where companies they’ve been told can’t be built without massive amounts of VC funding are thriving with little, to no, outside investment. We often start these events by warning attendees that they won’t be able to unsee what they’re about to see. Many leave these events with a whole new perspective on not only what is possible, but why limiting exposure the traditional venture business model is beneficial for founders, employees and the cultures and values they’re hoping to embody with their businesses.
Rather than write another blog post or clever FAQ, we wanted to bring that same in-person experience to those considering investment from Indie.vc.
Over the next 2 months, we’ll be embarking on a tour of most major metros in the US (we tried picking towns that were a short-ish road trip away from just about anywhere). Our goal with these info sessions is to share our experiences and motives directly with the Indie-curious. They are open to founders interested in taking investment from Indie.vc and Angels/Funds interested in funding companies the way we do. We’re planning to have some founders we’ve backed, and founders who’ve built and scaled profitable businesses, join us for these events to answer questions and share their experiences embracing the values and tactics we preach. |

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-never-take-the-first-offer-tickets-54706841636] is required to gain entry to this event ***
We’ve all been at the negotiation table, whether we choose to participate or not. While it’s easy to avoid this short-lived discomfort, doing so can cost the average person around $500,000 in lost income over the course of their lifetime. Making the decision to negotiate is the first step — this talk will help with the rest.
In this talk, we will discuss the circumstances that have lead to the pervasive underpaying of minority groups; the ways that companies can improve the situation; and how we, as job seekers, can take the reins and better advocate for our own value.
Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Doors open
6:00 p.m. - PDXWIT and Cayuse (event host) introduction
6:15 p.m. - Presentation Begins
7:00 p.m. - Networking
7:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes, there will be gender neutral restrooms.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes, the space is ADA accessible.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes, food and drink will be available.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: There is a parking garage located under Building 2 of World Trade Center Portland, and the garage address for GPS is 56 SW Taylor Street, Portland, Oregon 97204. The entrance is off Taylor between Naito and 1st. From the garage take the elevators to the bridge level (B) and walk over the bridge into Building 1's lobby (east). Parking can also be validated for up to 2 hours with a stamp.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: We are located at World Trade Center Portland - Building 1 at 121 SW Salmon Street, Suite 900. The lobby to Building 1 is up escalators (SW corner of 2nd and Salmon) on the 2nd floor. For ADA access, take the ground floor elevator to the 9th floor (press '9' outside the elevators and use the indicated cab). Follow signs to the Cayuse lobby. The security desk and a representative from Cayuse will be there to direct you to the event space.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: There are bike racks located in the parking garage, as well as racks around the World Trade Center Campus.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes! The event is located nearby to MAX and bus lines.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Join us for February Happy Hour at Puppet!
PDXWIT is looking forward to seeing you at our February Happy Hour at Puppet! Most of us procrastinate from time to time, but maybe that is not such a bad thing. The theme of the evening is Overcoming Procrastination, and we will discuss how that last minute pressure can often help us crank out some great work. The conversation starter to keep the networking flowing will be “What helps you focus when you need to get work done?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase some individuals in our community.
- An employee of Puppet will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities
- Rebecca Snyder will talk about how improv can help us in business
- A local engineering leader will present “A Nerd’s Guide to Debugging Procrastination”
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, announcements + lightning speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: No.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?

Q: What is the parking situation?
A: There is usually plenty of metered street parking and pay-to-park parking lots.

A: We will have signs in the lobby directing people to the 5th floor.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes - MAX runs right in front of our building so it is really convenient. The bus lines are just a couple blocks away.

This event is exclusively for technology startup founders. Founders, this is a risk-free way for you to get feedback on your investor pitch and stack the odds in your favor. If you want to raise funding for your venture, then this event is for you.
We're running this event over Meetaway -- the format is back-to-back 1on1 conversations over video call where you'll have the ability to pitch and get feedback from a number of other founders. It's efficient and a great way to get targeted feedback in a low-stakes setting.
RSVP and we'll send you a link to join.
The event is at Feb 19, 5-6pm Pacific. |

This class builds on the concepts introduced in Programming with Javascript 1 by exploring advanced data types (arrays and objects) and some of the language’s built-in functions called methods. Students will get a brief introduction to these ideas and then begin applying them hands-on through a series of mini projects.
By the end of this class, students will understand the purpose of and how to use loops, prototype methods, arrays and objects in Javascript. They will also learn where to find more information about these concepts and how to continue their studies on their own.
Recommended Prerequisites: Programming with JavaScript 1, typing skills |

Serverless Architecture Meetup - Security in a Serverless World: Understanding Risk and Protection
Roll back
| description |

Cheers to 2019! We are starting the year off talking about Security!
According to a 2018 survey from The New Stack, over 75% of organizations are using or plan to use serverless in the next 18 months. But it does not come without security risks. In this talk, Sonya will discuss key components of serverless architecture and potential risks organizations need to be aware of, such as: visibility and monitoring challenges, denial-of-service attacks, dependencies on external resources, access control risks, and best practices for serverless security both as functions are built and at runtime.
Sonya Koptyev is the Director of Evangelism at Twistlock. She has been driving community efforts across various development technologies since the early days of SharePoint and .NET. Sonya worked on building the Office developer community and the Microsoft AI developer community and bringing the latest in bleeding edge technologies into the hands of developers. As part of Twistlock, Sonya is looking to bring the world of secure cloud native development into the hands of every developer, ensuring that they can make the most of the best cloud native technologies in a secure way.
Schedule:
Doors Open at 6 p.m.
Programming to begin at 6:30 p.m. with Q&A after.
Drinks and Light Snacks will be served.
**Interested in speaking at a future event? Message us and let us know! We'd love to have you.** |
