<p>Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?</p> <p>PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!</p> <p>We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.</p> <p>This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.</p> <p>See you there!</p> |

This week Chris Irvine will share experiences from a recent project, where he converted a site's traditional search method over to a search service, specifically AWS CloudSearch. Key topics will be:</p> <p>* What can go wrong with typical RDBMS based search solutions?<br>* What is a search service? Time Series Prediction of SNOTEL Data
Roll back
| description |
Sunil Rao will be presenting his past research on SNOTEL data using the time series prediction.
Drought is a serious problem in much of the U.S., with the worst conditions across the southern and western parts of the nation. Much of irrigation and recreation facilities depend on proper forecasting of streamflow. The water supply for irrigation largely comes from rivers and creeks, whose streamflow originates from the springtime melting of winter snow. A water supply forecast is a prediction of streamflow volume that will flow past a point on a stream during a specified season, typically in the spring and summer. One of the primary sources for the data is through NRCS SNOTEL( Snow Telemetry) data (available to public as part of tax dollars at work). In this demo, we showcase one such tool (Timeseries ARIMAX model) to forecast Streamflow volume for Deschutes River Basin, OR and later compare with actual data to see how it performed.
If you would like to join the discussion check us out on Zoom https://zoom.us/j/7891236789.
Do you want to learn and share your passion in a supportive community? Knowledge Mavens is an ethos of sharing, creativity, and inspiration.
Our Meetup provides an opportunity to "Show and Tell" followed by feedback and Q&A. You'll have the opportunity to share with our channels such as Meetup, GitHub, YouTube, and Facebook to connect with more passionate people.
The second half of our session we'll collaborate on new topics. The winner wins an award for the most interesting topic and the opportunity to share in an upcoming session. |

Polyvagal Theory and Stress
Roll back
| description |
Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory has been impacting the field of psychophysiology for decades, and is now increasingly influential in the behavioral sciences. In this discussion, Joshua Sylvae, PhD, will detail the form and function of the autonomic nervous system, and in particular its relationship to cranial nerves originating in the brainstem. The importance of these interrelationships for efficacious functioning of body and mind will be touched on.

Calorie restriction has been associated with greater longevity, how does that affect the brain? Gail Stonebarger is currently collaborating with the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to determine whether calorie restriction (CR) of 30% is able to delay or slow brain aging in rhesus macaque monkeys. Previously, CR has been shown in various species to enhance cognition and metabolic function, extend lifespan, and, in this population, extend healthspan. In this talk, Gail will discuss normal and pathological brain aging, the unique population of very old monkeys housed at the NIA, what effects CR has on the brain, and will also include future directions of this research. |

*** Please note that this meeting is on the 3rd WEDNESDAY this month
because of the President's Day holiday on Monday! ***
Last year, KBOO suffered a website breach/hack from cryptocurrency
miners. Jenka Soderberg and Gaba Rodriguez will share the lessons they
learned from the attack and will offer tips on how you can better secure
your website and/or online presence. Most smaller organizations, such as
radio stations, non-profits, and small businesses, often depend on just
one or two people to maintain their sites. This can be both a good and
bad thing. As a result of the breach, Jenka, Gaba, and other KBOO
personnel learned some techniques to lock everything down and keep
their systems secure — even with limited resources!
Join us for a great presentation about their experience along with a
discussion of ways to help you prevent a hack of your own systems!
We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking
afterwards. We hope to see you there!
Schedule:
6:00 PM: Doors
6:10 PM: Introductions and news
6:15 PM: Presentation
7:15 PM: Q&A
7:30 PM: Wrap up and networking
Speaker bios:
Jenka Soderberg is the Web/New Media Coordinator at KBOO Community
Radio. She studied International Affairs at Georgetown University and
Peace Studies at the Bancaixa Institute for Justice and Peace in Spain.
She joined KBOO in 2007, after helping to organize Indymedia Centers
around the world to provide an open publishing platform for activists.
Gaba Rodriguez has been a software engineer for almost 20 years. She
founded DATA, an open data non-profit in South America, helped start
and implement the open contracting data standard in Mexico City, and
worked with the Coral Project: building tools and guides to improve
community spaces around journalism online. She currently works at
the Tor Project.
