We're kicking off the new year by cohosting a meetup with the PDXFLIT (Future Leaders in Tech) group. Join us on January 28th for a night of networking, mingling, and education as we host talks by two of the best speakers that the Portland tech scene has to offer. Perry Eising and Jason Lengstorf will be giving talks related to conquering imposter syndrome and getting starting in the tech industry.
Jason is a developer advocate at Gatsby, and Perry is a community developer at Netlify and previously helped educate the next generation of developers as the faculty lead at Epicodus.
Doors will be open at 5:30 PM and talks will start at 6. We encourage you to show up early to give ample time for networking, conversation, and refreshments. We will have this space until 8 PM.
This month, refreshments will be provided courtesy of Thinkful. Thinkful is an online coding bootcamp that is helping the next generation of software developers transition into the tech industry. They host a variety of events in Portland and are always accepting new students. If you're interested in learning more, be sure to check out their site at https://www.thinkful.com/.
We kindly ask that you abide by the following Code of Conduct when attending this event: https://www.meetup.com/pdxFLIT-Portland-Future-Leaders-In-Tech/photos/28737494/471776346/ |

<p>How do you define trust? When organizational culture fosters trust, what does that look like and how does it benefit the org? When trust is missing, what are the consequences? Why is it critical for executives and development teams to have relationships based on trust and how do we go about establishing and fostering trust between the two?</p> <p>Regardless of how you define trust, it’s a critical pillar in thriving, innovative organizations.</p> <p>Join in the discussion and offer your experience, musings, or ideas.</p> <p>Everyone is invited. You are always welcome within our community of practice. Please join us at Ringlers Pub for great food, great conversation, and good beer.</p> <p>Note: Cancellations will be posted on MeetUp and Calagator at least 3 hours before event time. We will not have the event in ice, or snowy conditions.</p> |

We are excited to present two failed presenters for January.
Isaac Porras:
People turning to Kickstarter to fund their awesome ideas should take a lesson from Isaac Porras. He is the second most failed creator on Kickstarter, with nearly 30 failed projects. If you are planning to Kickstart a project you shouldn’t miss Isaac share his cringe worthy stories of continued Kickstarter fails.
Corey Guidry:
Imagine, having a solid head start in online food delivery services in a young tech city like Portland.
8 months before Caviar, Uber Eats and Post Mates were operating, Delivery Dudes had the open Portland market in it’s sights. What happened? With such a head start, you’d think Delivery Dudes would be thriving in Portland, instead the project failed.
Let’s learn about this business and hear this Fail first hand by one of the Portland Partners Corey Guidry.
Each presenter will speak for 7-10 minutes followed by Q/A there will be some time for socializing before and afterward. |

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Mob Programming
Roll back
| description |
**<p>Join us for a hands-on workshop experiencing Mob Programming!**Mob Programming is a software development practice with many benefits - it raises code quality, removes knowledge silos, minimizes mental fatigue, and more. In practice it feels more like a bulldozer than a racecar - unstoppable and thorough. The core of mob programming is pointing many pairs of eyes on a single problem, pushing all the code through a single keyboard. Each month we'll explore different methods for learning to mob well and reaping the rewards of this practice as soon as possible on your own team.</p> **<p>Directions:** The building you are looking for is on 2nd and Taylor (look for the Starbucks on the ground floor). Take the escalators on the 2nd St. entrance to the WTC Building One second floor lobby (ADA access: ground floor elevator). Take an elevator to the 9th floor (press '9' outside the elevators and use the indicated cab). Follow signs to the Cayuse lobby and sign in for the event.</p> <br><br>
**<p>Facilitator Bio:</p>** <p>Jeff Patterson is a software quality engineer at Jama Software, language agnostic, quality evangelist, and non-traditional CS grad. He has facilitated Global Day of Code Retreat, founded a peer group to support Community College CS students transferring to University, and is often heard saying, "Software is made of people!"</p> |

1) Chapter 6: Getting our priorities straight of "Bayesian Methods for Hackers" https://github.com/CamDavidsonPilon/Probabilistic-Programming-and-Bayesian-Methods-for-Hackers Please take a look at it. It's perfectly OK if you are just starting the book. Come with your questions and we will discuss them.
2) Anything else probabilistic we can think of. |

Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory has been impacting the field of psychophysiology for decades, and is now increasingly influential in the behavioral sciences. In this discussion, Joshua Sylvae, PhD, will detail the form and function of the autonomic nervous system, and in particular its relationship to cranial nerves originating in the brainstem. The importance of these interrelationships for efficacious functioning of body and mind will be touched on.

| description |
Join Women Who Code Portland for our first Networking Night of 2019! We’re starting the year off with a theme that is very important to our mission of inspiring women to excel in technology careers: “What Drives You to Stay Working in Tech?” Women from Ampere Computing will discuss their own inspirations, achievements, and career path through the tech industry. For this event, we are hoping to remind all of our members what makes technology so exciting, and what one can do to continue to grow and thrive in their career.
Our panel will feature:
- Neerbhee Verma - Principal Engineer
- Annie Duong - Senior Engineering Design Manager
- Rashmi Wadwa - Principal Engineer
- Beth Gordon - Developer Advocate
AGENDA
5:30 - 6:15 PM – Doors Open + Networking
6:15 - 6:30 PM – Welcome from Renee James, CEO of Ampere Computing, and WWCode Portland
6:30 - 7:30 PM – Panel + Q&A from the audience
7:30 - 8:00 PM – Networking + Closing Remarks
OUR SPEAKERS
Neerbhee Verma is a principal engineer focusing on logic design and micro-architecture. Before joining Ampere, she designed custom cores for Snapdragon (mobile) and Centriq (server) chips at Qualcomm for nearly 15 years. She has a Masters in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Annie Duong recently joined Ampere as a senior engineering design manager. Prior, she worked at Intel for 17 years with an expertise in CPU logic and circuit design. In addition to her technical work, her passion has been in people, so she job-shaped the role Chief of People Operations to focus on organizational culture and diversity and inclusion. She was a board member of the Oregon chapter of the Women at Intel Network (WIN) and co-chair of the annual WIN conference. She is happy to share her journey and the decision to move back into tech at Ampere as she aspires to inspire the next generation of tech female leaders and work towards an inclusive environment.
Rashmi Wadwa is an Electrical Engineering graduate from Oklahoma State University. Before joining Ampere, she worked on mobile and server CPU front-end design with Qualcomm in Raleigh, North Carolina for 6 years. More recently she switched gears, moving from the East Coast to the West Cost for a new career challenge: L2 cache design. She’s really excited and looking forward to the new venture. In her spare time, she likes to cook, climb, ski and dance.
Beth Gordon joined Ampere in December as a developer advocate. Before that, she worked at Intel for nearly a decade in roles as a Linux systems administrator and technical marketing engineer. She holds dual degrees in Environmental Science and Spanish from Oregon State University. In her spare time, she does science communication via her dog (https://www.instagram.com/spacewhippet/) on Instagram.
