Have you heard of Phoenix? Phoenix is a framework for building HTML5 apps, API backends and distributed systems. Written in Elixir.

Seve Salazar of HouseHappy.org will walk us through creating a simple but real(wish)-world JSON API using Phoenix and deploying it to production as an OTP application. It will cover usage of Ecto, rendering JSON from a controller, integrating with StatsD using Exometer, and finally using edeliver to ship it to production. |

PDX Legal Innovators Meetup: Jan 28 at 6pm
Roll back
| description |

<p>Hello PDX Legal Innovators!</p> <p><br>For our first meetup of 2016, we're excited to host attorney <a href="http://shemiafagan.com/">Shemia Fagan</a>. Shemia <a href="https://hkm.com/attorneys/shemia-fagan/">practices employment law</a> in Portland, is an <a href="https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/fagan">Oregon Legislator</a>, founded the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/efficientattorney/">Efficient Attorney</a> community, and hosts the <a href="http://www.workingparents.lawyer/podcast/">Working Parents Lawyer Podcast</a>. </p> <p>As you might imagine with all those activities, Shemia relies on a number of technology tools to support her busy schedule and maximize her productivity. For this month's meetup we're going to try a more interactive format, with John interviewing Shemia about her favorite legal productivity tools, how she uses them, and what she'd like to see that nobody has built yet. And of course we'll take questions from the audience as well.</p> <p>We are applying for CLE accreditation in Oregon for this session--we'll let you know the details when we have them. We may ask for a small donation from those who seek credit to cover accreditation fees.</p> <p>Finally, we're looking for presenters throughout 2016, so if you've got a legal innovation you'd like to share or know someone who does, definitely get in touch!</p> <p>--John & Jason</p> |

FailPDX (Portland Startup Week)
Roll back

###FailPDX back in action!
FailPDX will be kicking off the new year with a 4 person panel discussing the trials and tribulations of building a successful business. Each panel member will share their personal failures, what they learned from the experience, and answer any questions we may have. This FailPDX event is officially part of Portland Startup Week. Startup Week is a free, five-day celebration of our community that builds momentum and opportunity around entrepreneurship. The week is led by local entrepreneurs and hosted in amazing spaces all over town.
For those who may not be familiar with our group: FailPDX was created out of direct response to a lot of the meetups and conferences that seemed to be focused on all of the good things about being part of startup and taking chances. The truth is, success is a unicorn. FailPDX was created to remind people that failure is inevitable. This group is a place where everyone can come together to listen and share their failure stories.
If you are interested in speaking at or sponsoring one of our events, please email [email protected].
###Schedule:
5:00 PM: Refreshments & Networking<br>
5:30 PM: Presentation followed by Q/A <br>
6:30 PM: Wrap things up<br>
*Please note the above schedule is subject to change and will include our panelist closer to event time.*
Look forward to seeing everyone! |

AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch: A Prioritization Score Card
Roll back
| description |

Now here's something we don't talk about often enough: prioritization skills. Yet, our inability to prioritize--at every level of the organization--easily trips us up. The liquor of urgency inebriates us until everything looks equally important. And then, we are paralyzed or dashing off in all directions at once and getting nothing done . . .
Fear not! Help is on the way.
On January 8th Lorie Gordon will lead us in a discussion centered around the notion of a prioritization score card, a tool she regularly uses in her work. Bring your friends. Bring your Product Owner. Bring your prioritization conundra, and join your colleagues in a rousing discussion of the perils of prioritization.
Same place. Same time. We'll be in the back.

Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
Rust is meant to compete with C and C++ in performance, but also provide memory safety. Someone has written a small kernel in Rust.
Rust is only attractive to JavaScript / Python types when they run into a problem where memory consumption or processor consumption is a real limiting factor. Then, it's much easier for them to transition into Rust than C/C++, but Rust gives them the performance they need.
Some Rust killer apps:
- Mozilla's experimental browser engine, Servo (which outperforms Firefox on a single core, and destroys it when running on four cores);
- Tilde's Skylight profiling system for Rails apps, which uses Rust to handle the voluminous data produced by running apps:
http://www.tilde.io/skylight/
- OpenDNS, which is again using Rust to handle large amounts of data in real time:
https://labs.opendns.com/2013/10/04/zeromq-helping-us-block-malicious-domains/
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

#Animation and the Future of UX
**› Please RSVP via Eventbrite [HERE](http://bit.ly/1NYp5E3)**
Since the widespread adoption of CSS animations and transitions, animation has started creeping back into web design. Loading screens and “flashy” intros are back, as well as subtle UI interactions that invisibly plus the user’s experience. Learn the six applications of motion in interface designs, how you can apply them in your own projects, and when to start planning for motion in your process.
*Rachel Nabors is a web animation expert, award-winning cartoonist and interaction developer, and invited expert at the W3C. She has worked on interactive projects with companies from Adobe to Mozilla. She travels the world, speaking and training, and helping teams put animation to work in their design systems and documentation. When not biking around her home city of Portland, she curates WebAnimationWeekly.com. You can catch her as @rachelnabors on Twitter and at rachelnabors.com.*
**› Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy half-hour!** The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic.** The presentation will begin right at 6p.**
**› After the presentation, everyone is invited to continue networking at an exclusive happy hour opportunity, one story up at the Portland City Grill.**
› Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, [New Relic FutureTalks PDX](http://www.meetup.com/New-Relic-FutureTalks-PDX/), and following us on Twitter @newrelic.
› FutureTalk is brought to you by **New Relic** in collaboration with **[TAO](http://www.techoregon.org)** |

Startup Weekend Vancouver - Community Pitch Night
Roll back
| description |

Enjoy a fun evening meeting other entrepreneurs, and learn to give 1 minute pitches in a safe environment.
Pitching is an important skill to succeed in life and in Startup Weekend. When you're meeting people for the first time, its important to be able to introduce yourself and make a good impression in a short amount of time.
How it works:
Arrive early, at 6 pm to register and mingle. At 6:45 we start with group introductions.
Then at 7, we'll split up into small groups of 4. Everyone in the groups get to give one minute pitches, followed by 4 minutes of Q&A / coaching from peers and mentors.
After everyone gets a turn, we'll split up the groups again, and the fun starts over.
By the third round, everyone is guaranteed to be able to pitch like pros!
Don't forget, the Startup Weekend starts on Friday January 29th. www.bit.ly/swvanwa |
