<p>Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?</p> <p>PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!</p> <p>We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.</p> <p>This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.</p> <p>p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!</p> |

RSVP for this event and I'll follow-up. We’re a no-sales group and I work to keep the group as promised -- a group of Tech Startup Founders.
We meet the 4th Tuesday of the month at 4pm Eastern / 1pm Pacific.

CNPDX & OpenInfra April: HW Accelerators & Container Compliance
Roll back
| description |

→ |
For the second time in Cloud Native PDX history, we will be having a joint meetup with OpenStack (now the Open Infrastructure Meetup). This is also our first-ever Southwest Portland meetup.
Two speakers will share their experiences in Kubernetes and OpenStack. Pizza, beverages, and raffle will round out the evening.
AGENDA
5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Check-in, Pizza, & Networking
6:00 – 6:30 p.m. Accelerating the Adoption of Hardware Accelerators in Kubernetes – Swati Sehgal of Intel
With containers becoming the desired deployment model for a wide range of workloads such as Big Data, IoT, storage, AI, ML, SDN and NFV solutions, container orchestration tools like Kubernetes, need to evolve to meet stringent networking and resource management requirements for optimum utilization of compute, network and storage. Such application generate large volume of data that needs to be securely transferred in and out of storage and over the network and inherently require compression and encryption which makes them computationally expensive. Offloading such operations to the hardware accelerators results in better CPU utilization and improved application performance.
6:30 – 7:00 p.m. Container Compliance Tooling -- Nisha Kumar of VMWare
Nisha introduces Tern, a utility for software package introspection in containers. This tool allows administrators to have the same level of confidence on what's in their containers as they currently do with VM inages, including compliance audits, bill of materials, and exploit detection. Nisha is the primary author of Tern. https://github.com/vmware/tern
7:00 – 7:15 p.m. Raffle and closing remarks |

PDXWIT INSIGHT: How To Cultivate Feminine and Masculine Synergy At Work

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-insight-how-to-cultivate-feminine-and-masculine-synergy-at-work-tickets-60325258472] is required to gain entry to this event ***
In pursuit of equal rights and opportunities, we have tended to see men as the “haves” and women as the “have-nots.”
Whether or not we dare admit it, this simplistic view fuels an adversarial dynamic across genders.
By shifting from fighting for our rights to standing for the common good, we can continue to elevate gender related conversations towards greater partnership and synergy.
In this presentation you will:
• Uncover the root cause for inner world conflicts and outer world discontent in your dynamics among genders.
• Discover the guiding principle that nourishes more effective collaboration.
• Learn a simple and powerful tool to improve your relationship dynamics and increase effectiveness at work— immediately.
Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Doors open
5:45 p.m. - Introduction
6:00 p.m. - Presentation Begins
7:00 p.m. - Presentation Ends
7:30 p.m. - Event Ends
Event FAQ
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: No, we have no parking - we're located in the heart of downtown so we'd recommend people bike or take public transit. There are parking garages near us, plus limited street parking, if people need to drive.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: The entrance to the Commonwealth Building is on 6th avenue, in between Washington and Stark (labelled correctly on Google Maps as well). Folks will need to take the elevator up to the 8th floor, and from there we will have the doors to our suite open so that there are no auto-locking door situations.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No, our bike storage is unfortunately not accessible for the public. There are many bike racks located around our building though.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes, we are close to several bus and max stops! This would be a great option for people.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

<p>Join us for a night of live coding, walking through some of the testing features that come out of the box with Laravel. See how we can go from a brand new project to a simple app with a code coverage report. If you are new to Laravel, TDD, or testing in general, you'll not want to miss this talk. While some of this code will be Laravel specific (there's so much included to help make PHP Unit even better than it already is) general testing practices will be discussed. Who: Kurtis Holsapple is a Portland based software engineer, and loves Laravel. He's been writing PHP (and more) for over 15 years.</p> <p>This month we are trying out a new event space, be sure to RSVP and arrive with photo ID so that you can check in!</p> <p>To get there:<br>Enter the Pioneer Place mall and head to the 3rd floor, look for the WeWork offices.<br>Photo ID will be required to enter the venue, there should be folks at the front desk to help.</p> |

PDXPUG: Postgres with non-blocking IO and Scala

Speaker: Grant Holly
This month I will be demonstrating using non-blocking IO database access using Scala and the Slick library. No really, the library is called Slick AND it is very cool to use. Slick and Scala are great for working with Postgres with either straight SQL, or using the FRM (that’s a Functional Relation Mapper like in functional programming). After Hannah gave a great talk talk about Python, Postgres, and ORMs, I got to thinking that I could do a language and ORM talk. Thanks Hannah, that was great.
https://github.com/grantholly/pdx_pug_scala_and_pg
Hi, it’s me still Grant. I work at New Relic as an engineer on the database engineering team. I’ve been using Postgres in production since 9.2 and have been using and enjoying Scala for about two years having worked on a couple of production high throughput applications. |

Salem CS Education Advocates: Help a teacher teach critical computer science courses in OR/SW Wa -- Volunteer Info Session and Luncheon
Roll back
| description |

The high schools listed below* have an exciting opportunity to offer computer science next year. They are investing in their students by partnering with Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program to build and grow their CS program. Less than 30% of Oregon High School offer any type of programming classes. Computer science is a vital driver in today’s global innovation economy. Without CS in high schools, our students are missing out on essential computational skills that will help them succeed in any career they wish to pursue, and professional skills that could lead to an economically secure future.
Action We’re Taking:
Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program recruits, trains, mentors, and places passionate technology professionals into high school classrooms as volunteer instructors and teaching assistants. These volunteers bring subject matter expertise and will join an existing high school teacher to teach computer science together. TEALS provides training for both parties, rigorous curricula, and opportunities for students to continue their education outside of the classroom.
Are you a computer science professional who wants to help develop the next generation of Oregon techies? Come learn more about the Microsoft Philanthropies TEALS Program and how coding pros like you are changing lives as TEALS volunteers!
If you’re interested in learning more about the opportunity to help shape students’ career opportunities – all while having fun – go to www.tealsk12.org/volunteers to learn more about helping one of the schools listed below. Or, you can contact Helen Henry, the TEALS Senior Regional Manager for Oregon and SW Washington, at [email protected] for more information.

Art In The Park
Roll back
| description |

It's springtime, and it's time to get outside. Do you need some motivation to share your artwork with the public? How about setting up in the Park and inviting people to encourage you to create? Bring your drawing pads, ipads, paints, and easels; or just come hang out and talk to other talented artists.
I'll be set up on the riverfront near the Salmon Street Springs Fountain in Downtown Portland. Look for Garrett with an iPad at the steps where the Portland Spirit embarks.
This event is weather permitting. Keep an eye on this Meetup 24 hrs in advance for cancellations due to heavy rain forecasts. |

Dick’s Primal Burger is, perhaps, the nation’s first diner to systematically and actively incorporate dietary needs into its menu by offering mouthwatering fare made from healthy, humanely raised ingredients. In fact, the servers don’t bat an eyelash when you request a special order or a modification. They encourage it because they know you want to feel good about what you eat. |
