Roll back

<p>Thanks to all who were able to make it out last Tuesday! It was great getting to chat with some of you about your backgrounds and what you are hoping to get from this course. We will do our best to make this as valuable as possible for all of you. No worries if you weren't here on the first day. This next session we will be continuing to get people setup with all of the materials needed to be successful in this course. Bring any technical questions you have and we will make sure that you are good to go.</p> <p>We will also be beginning our dive into the wonderful world of Git. I know this can be a topic that is difficult for people to ramp up on so if you are struggling know that you are not alone. Ask questions on Slack. Bring your questions to the group. We are are here to help.</p> <p>A lot of times there is parking right in front of the building. If this is not the case I recommend trying 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Ave. There are usually spots down that way. Parking isn't free until after 7pm so don't forget to pay! There is also a lot right next door if you don't want to mess with street parking.</p> <p>As always feel free to message me or post on Slack if you have any questions. Hope to see you Tuesday!</p> <p>* New to our group? Need to join our Slack channel? Looking for free resources? Check out our website @ www.pythonpirates.org for all of that and more!</p> |

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Lean Coffee in the North
Roll back
| description |
<p>Join us for coffee/tea or beverage of your choice and fun discussions about how to overcome challenges we face or to share about Agile-inspired and other topics we agree or disagree with. This event is aimed at getting people in the North and NE areas of Portland and Vancouver together to facilitate discussions. It's not exclusive to people that live in the North and NE, just closer to those parts of the city to make it easier to come out.</p> <p>We'll spend the first few minutes gathering discussion ideas, then roll right into the smooth easy cadence of the lively chatter.</p> <p>If you aren't going to be able to make it, please update your RSVP so that we know how many to expect.</p> <p>Parking:<br>Use the Gotham Building Parking lot on the corner of N Page St and N Borthwick Ave.</p> <p>Building Entry:<br>Entry to the building is best through the door by Little Gotham Coffee. We'll have someone meeting on time attendees at the door. For those that run a few minutes late due to traffic or other reasons out of your control, there will be directions at the door on how to contact someone to let you in.</p> <p>Weather Policy:<br>Cancellations will be posted on MeetUp and Calagater 3 hours before event time. We will not have the event in ice, or snowy conditions.</p> <p>Percipio Consulting Group is opening up their offices to host this event.</p> <p>Percipio is a business consulting firm that helps companies identify opportunities for improvement and successfully implement meaningful changes. That means more efficient processes, shored-up controls, a technology solution that really works for you, or all of the above. They have helped many companies, both Fortune 500 and mid-sized, navigate complex projects by truly understanding business needs and defining up front what success will look like.</p> <p>New to Lean Coffee?</p> <p>It's a great way to have real, focused dialogue and we often discuss matters of agile, lean and such - but anything goes. As far as the mechanics, here's the format we'll follow:</p> <p>Step 1: Everybody writes down proposed topics on stickies, placing them in the center of the table. Take as much time as needed, but typically takes only 3-5 minutes (or whenever coffee is ready).</p> <p>Step 2: Each topic is briefly described by its writer to get a flavor for the subject (15-30 seconds typically per sticky).</p> <p>Step 3: Each person gets five votes which they indicate by marking the voted-for sticky with their Sharpie. Mark with a plus + if you agree with the topic and want to discuss it, or a minus - if you disagree and want to discuss it, mark it with a dot if you want to hear the discussion and maybe join in. You can put all votes on one, one across many, however you feel. Each mark counts as one vote.</p> <p>Step 4: The top vote-getting stickies are placed in the ToDo column, ordered by the stickies with the most votes at the top. In an Agile fashion, we'll use groupings of ToDo, Doing, Done and Lessons learned.</p> <p>Step 5: Each of these stickies are discussed for 5 minutes, most votes first. The facilitator takes a quick "Cesar" (thumbs up/down) vote at the five-minute timer, and she moves on for three more minutes if the discussion still has majority interest. When complete, move the sticky over to the Done column. Rinse and repeat.</p> <p>Step 6: wrap-up thoughts at the end - what one idea or person did you most enjoy, then break for home/drinks/cover.</p> |

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Aligning Your Team … Beyond Pre-Defined Roles
Roll back
| description |
<p>Some Agile methodologies prescribe roles within a team. Then why can it be so hard some times to get a team aligned and firing on all cylinders throughout the course of all sprints? This presentation will call out some areas to be aware of, that we can sometimes overlook, or be completely blind to when we start a project that is agile, waterfall, or hybrid. We will then look at avenues to address these oversights to empower you and your team to better see and address how you can improve your team’s effectiveness in building deliverables, your organization, and individual team members.</p> <p>Bio</p> <p>Kip Davis is the Principal at Deal With The Gap LLC. He has 25+ years professional experience in and across multiple functions from software & hardware support to Director of Marketing to PMO Manager, to Product Manager, and CRM Administrator, among others. He has helped set up and manage Programs, PMOs and Portfolios. He’s utilized agile, hybrid, and waterfall methodologies as manager, consultant, contractor, and employee. He is a life-long learner and has an MBA degree, with applicable certifications of Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Prosci Change Practitioner, Illumeo Organization Development Certification, and Certified Business Architect (CBA). Through extensive research and experience he has considered and conceptually combined and bridged several relevant industry models and methodologies and established an alignment framework which he uses to help individuals and organizations understand where they are in relation to their desired outcomes, and what options they can take or create to better accomplish their goals.</p> <p>Notice: This meeting may be recorded.</p> |

SIM-Portland April Meeting - "Blockchain: Getting beyond the hype to real world use cases."
Roll back
| description |
Blockchain has been around for a while. It is now past the “Peak of Inflated Expectations” and probably more in the “Trough of Disillusionment” on the Technology Adoption Curve. But what are the barriers to realizing this technology? Which companies are having successes and which are having failures? And as we begin on the “Path to Enlightenment,” are there real use cases achieving actual results that we can begin to pin our expectations and planning on?
Join us for the SIM Portland April 2019 meeting when we will follow one CIO’s process of discovery relating to the component software technology that is Blockchain. Through the eyes of a key information system decision maker, and by querying local experts, we’ll review what is happening with Blockchain. Our experts include developers working hard on developing the business leaders who are creating new blockchain models. Come learn what new opportunities and challenges are here today and on the horizon with the implementation and operational management of this technology.
Key topics that will be explored include,
• A CIO’s approach to evaluating blockchain
• Review of current status Blockchain technology
• Major adoption areas in Blockchain
• Examples of Blockchain project successes and failures
Speakers
Cian Montgomery, Director of Technology, LO3 Energy
Benjamin Diggles, VP Business Development, Constellation Labs
Nathan DeNero, Cofounder, YouBase

Come spend a day with fellow CTOs based in Portland for a single track, one day conference touching on product management, leadership and technology.
# Agenda
## 8:00 am Check In/Registration
## 8:45 am Welcome!
Etienne de Bruin, Founder 7CTOs
## 9:00 – 9:45 am Keynote: Making the Product Engineering Marriage Thrive
Vidya Dinamani, Founder & Partner Product Rebels
Heather Samarin, Co-Founder/Principal Product Rebels
What makes a great product family work is having the product parents, Product & Engineering, in a great relationship. So, what goes into making this work? This talk explores the root causes of most dysfunctions and provides the product perspective in not just identifying and overcoming, but put you on the path to thriving.
## 10:00 – 10:30 am Distributed team: Benefits and Challenges
Oleg Pashigorev, CTO Promomash
How to assemble team on a small budget, without sacrificing speed or quality? We usually hear 2 type of answers: it’s impossible or go hire dev shop from India and we all know what to expect from it. But sometimes we do hear a story that somebody managed to build a great product with offshore team. How did they do it?
In this talk I will share with you what it took to create a successful distributed development team. We will go over benefits and challenges as well as restrictions that we had to put in order to work with people from countries that are at WAR. We will also discuss specifics in the hiring process and practices that help us create the culture we all desperately seek and want.
## 10:45 – 11:15 am Degeneracy, Code, and Innovation, or: How to Fail By Succeeding
Aaron Longwell, Lead Technical Advisor U.S. Department of State
When we write software, we are “encoding” our observations about the present for use in the future. But we don’t know much about the future, and our observations about the present are often incomplete and biased. Every organism on the planet faces this problem, and Evolutionary Biology is the study of how organisms have attempted to solve it. In this talk, we’ll explore how we can take inspiration from the natural world and apply it to software and organizational design.
## 11:30 am – 12:00 pm Design Thinking and Agile for Family Life
Alex Zub, CTO Handsome
Many of us use the Agile methodologies and the Design Thinking approach in design and development activities at work. What if we could apply things that make our work so effective and efficient to family life? This talk will discuss the value of leveraging professional methodologies in our everyday life.
## 12:00 pm Break for Lunch
## 1:30 – 3:00 pm Workshop: Building Products that Customers (and your team) Love
Heather Samarin, Co-Founder/Principal Product Rebels
Vidya Dinamani, Founder & Partner Product Rebels
Building products that customers love is the goal of every product team. In this workshop, we work through three core components that every leader can take back to their teams to sharpen product focus, improve team collaboration, and raise overall engagement. This highly interactive workshop is fun, immediately applicable and will help you develop a better rapport and partnership with your product leader.
## 3:15 – 3:45 pm
Jerome Bonhomme, CTO American Specialty Health
## 4:00 – 4:30 pm
Sergey Sundukovskiy, Co-Founder, CTO and Chief Product Officer at Raken, Inc.
## 4:45 – 5:15 pm Mechanical Confidence
Adam Cuppy, COO ZEAL
More often then not “confidence” is taught as a practice of positive self-talk; that confidence is the result of belief and time. While this appears to be true, it isn’t. Confidence can be developed, mechanically. We can be more confident without having to solely believe we’re confident.
Confidence, in fact, is the result of engrained habit. This talks looks at how you can develop a process to instill what so many of us wish we had more of.
## 5:15 pm Closing & Thank you

<p>Guest Speaker: Erik Gross, Co-founder of The Tech Academy</p> <p>Today's modern web development tools give you a ton of code right out of the gate, making rapid application development possible. But it can be a challenge to understand what each part of your new, auto-generated app does, and how to modify the app as you make it solve the business need that drove its creation in the first place.</p> <p>In this Tech Talk, Tech Academy co-founder Erik Gross will go over the essential principles of all web application frameworks, and then review how Microsoft's ASP.NET MVC implements those principles. You'll leave with a greater understanding of web app frameworks, how MVC works and how to modify it, and an approach to analyzing any pre-built framework you use in the future.</p> <p>12:45 p.m. Pizza and Refreshments<br>1:00 p.m. Tech Talk starts</p> <p>Please RSVP</p> |

Find your new best customers by building a digital marketing plan that focuses on the goals, campaigns, and tactics that work best for you. From websites to social media to email marketing and advertising, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and hard to see what is really driving sales.
With 10 years experience in digital marketing strategy, in both small businesses and nonprofits, Lyndal Frazier-Cairns will teach you how to separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves, and double down on the marketing that works for you.
In addition to this intensive training, you will also take away a full, personalized marketing plan that includes best practices, your goals, and the steps you need to take to make your business plans come to fruition. Your clients are looking for what you do. Let's help them find you.
___
Lyndal Frazier-Cairns has been helping small businesses and nonprofits tell their stories since 2000. Among her fondest memories are: A million-strong Facebook activist movement to save the Queensland AIDS Council's ad campaign; supporting 15 indigenous young people get their start in journalism; putting an undies-clad butt on the rear of a San Francisco bus; and that time she scolded a mobster for being rude. |

The WHAT, WHEN & HOW of starting, growing and sustaining your business
Roll back
| description |

Starting and growing a business is not an intuitive process. But there IS a process. One of the tricks is understanding what your business needs most at a given point in time, so that you can prioritize where to spend your time and energy and maximize the results you want to achieve. One way to do that is to understand what stage of business you are in.
So, what stage of business are you in? Are your current priorities and actions in alignment with what your business really needs right now? If not, you could be spending a lot of time and energy on the wrong things. It may sound simple, but the fact is that many businesses make the mistake of investing too much in the wrong things at the wrong time, or event the right things at the wrong time. And those can be expensive mistakes.
For example, the needs of a fledgling startup are different from a business that is scaling to accommodate growth. Taking the time to understand the stages of business development is critical to making strategic decisions and avoiding costly delays that can hold your business back. When you know where you stand, you will save time, money and energy by understanding what stage of business you are in, and what to focus on to get to your next milestone.
In this hands-on workshop, we'll focus on some of the earlier stages that small businesses go through, and why some stages require more focus on marketing and sales, while others require an investment in systems, operations, or HR. Understanding the evolving needs of your business can help you anticipate (and budget for!) important investments of time and money that will help your business grow, one manageable stage at a time.
Takeaways from this workshop include:
-Understand the stages of business development, and how this impacts your ability to succeed
-Identify what stage of business you are in, and how to set realistic, achievable business goals
-Learn how to anticipate your business needs over time and better plan for growth
-Opportunities to get hot seach coaching on your individual business challenges
Are you a coach, consultant, freelancer or small business that wants to grow? Do you find it a challenge to prioritize where to spend your time, energy and money in your business? Do you feel a pressure to work on "everything, all the time" in your business? Would you like to be able to anticipate and plan ahead so you can pace yourself and feel more in control of your business growth? This workshop is for you! |
